    Algae bloom

You have to think about this shape of tank differently. The dimensions are similar to a 'conventional' shape tank, but on it's side. Instead of flow going left to right and vice versa....you have to think about it going up and down. A small or micro power head would resolve many issues...

    Algae bloom

Do you have co2?....lights, and for how long? It's not just about remedies in how to remove algae, but rather solutions in trying to keep it away in the first place. The removal from glass is easy....A razor blade, or some similar device from an aquatic store.

    Algae bloom

You need to add some tank specs before anyone can diagnose.

What is this gunk on my wood?

Re: blimey is this gunk on my wood? This is normal for this to form on wood. Amanos will clear it for you. Get them in there quickly though, as this stuff can take over in no time at all.

what kind of algae is this please?

Mess?...not really mate. Looks like a nice layout. It''s hard to say, but I'm suspecting diatoms.(or a form of)

Brown Fuzzzy Algae - need help

I'd go back to basics. 2 54wt5 for maybe 6 or 7 hours a day, until you've managed to eradicate your problems. Then from there, balance your co2 and ferts and if required, add metal halides for maybe 1 hour per day. Watch for problems, and increase or decrease your lighting.

Brown Fuzzzy Algae - need help

Too much light in an unstable tank. Go back to the older configuration, until things settle down. To add more light you need more co2. The age of the lamp really shouldn't matter. It's a type of diatom, which in this case, I'd choose amano shrimp over ottos.

    Need advice on Cyanobacteria

It can also be introduced via the plant pots we receive from lfs's On many an occasion, I've received potted plants with slight bga on them, if not cleaned priorly, it can manifest itself within the system.

GDA, how to get rid of it

here, here. I completely agree. How about good housekeeping to keep GDA at bay? :eh: I rarely suffer it nowadays.

    personally, I'd clean the filter.

    hc covered in algae

I'd agree with that. I'm dosing at least 10ml daily of TPN+ ...TPN, alternate days, on my 60cm

    BBA algae and surface scum

use a small container to syphon the top layer off, until you become stable. leave the filters running, to create movement on the top whilst you take the top layer off.

    Fluctuating CO2 levels and algae

increase co2 or distribution of co2. and half the output of what ever lighting you've got....simples. lower that drop checker near to the substrate to.

Eradicate algae altogether from the tank - Theory

were forgetting that 90%of tropica and aquafleur plants are grown above water. It's tank conditions that induce algae, the amount of wonderful, brand new planted tanks with tropica plants, ADA systems...high end gear basically, that end up not quite as good as the products them selves...still...

Green hair algae only on Rotala Wallichii

IMO/E It's not wise to run co2 all night. The biological content of the filter and substrate need o2 at lights out...so do plants what I'd do is, turn co2 off at night, but switch it on 3 maybe 4 hours before lights on. from your above statement, it sounds like co2 fluctuations when lights are...

green algae on substrate level glass?

Trying to increase flow to these areas is vital, to help algae developing in these horrid spots.

Algae Problem or lack of ferts?

i was dosing double the recommended EI dosing for a 60l with high co2. it wasn't until I heightened the light that i saw GSA disappear over night. raising the light may just allow you to run your tank as you are dosing and co2 wise. There's too much light with no fuel.
  19. Mark Evans

Algae Problem or lack of ferts?

    look at your lighting too.
  20. Mark Evans

has anyone read this? (sears-conlin article on algae)

i know jack about the science behind EI, but one thing i am sure about is, the fact since i started EI, i've never had more success with growing plants than i have had of late. It's the most (for me)simplistic way of ferting a tank. pick your tank size and add ferts...simples. by the way, even...

    Algae are nutrient scavengers

i've cottoned on to this a few months back. for me light is more important than co2.
  22. Mark Evans

Can't seem to get rid of GSA

yep, 1 week. But i don't think the po4 increase alone would do it. If EI dosing is correct there should be enough po4 to prevent GSA (i think) it was the light height that seem to cure it. CO2 was already high, believe me and flow was extreme. i did add more po4 purely out of hearing this...
  23. Mark Evans

Can't seem to get rid of GSA

unless you hit the sweet spot. my 60 was spotless, literally. even with wood, stone and anubias in full sun, everything stayed clean. i do feel that light plays just as much a vital part as co2. even with high co2, the light height is where you control everything.
  24. Mark Evans

BBA and plants not growing well

true, but if light is too high with no co2, then light is the problem, no? cut back the lighting. in terms of strength rather than length. i may be barking up the wrong tree though.
  25. Mark Evans

    scubing green spot off

IME light is a good way of controlling it. with my recently installed MH lamp, raising the light physically so light intensities are lower coupled with added po4 eliminated GSA completely within a week. then keeping the light at this particular height for the remainder of the tanks life worked...

    Algae on Cyperus

my helferi in "miracle mire" was faultless. but them i was dosing EI and the ADA range is lean. I had to take it out of my big MA tank, due to lower light co2 and fert levels...it just didn't like it. only the old growth gets algae, anything new should be clean IME. i may be completely wrong...

    New Aquarium Diatom Algae !

good job there rumours. i've never had problems with ottos in new tanks. i put 10 in my 60L when it was only 2/3 days old. i've got a filter stuffed with mature media (thanks MA) @ 7 days old, i've not seen one bit of brown stuff, or anything else for that matter.

Blue Green Algae & ADA Bacter 100

i believe it could cloud the water. remember reading it somewhere. i think ADA suggest it helps keep bga at bay from the outset rather than killing it once you've got it. the 100 strong bacteria colonises the substrate helping to reduce the chance of getting bga along with other preventative...

    Erythromycin

it works on BGA a treat. i've used it once in my early days, then made sure i had prevention rather than the cure. it works on BGA, fact. they say it harms bacteria, i had no i'll effects what so ever (no apparent effects anyway)

    Getting lots of hair algae

is that the plus+ ? 2.5ml per day seems low to me.i might be wrong. i used to dose more than that in my 60L. you know what your doing though tom :D lilleys IME dispense water in such a way that flow is reduced. i dont like them. i'm switching over to the power head mentality.

    Getting lots of hair algae

i've stopped doing that for this reason..... i had the diffuser underneath my inlet direct in to filter. 1 particular day i noticed the drop checker going blue'ish. i couldnt work it out, until i knocked the filter and a stream of gassy water came out. it happened a few times. co2 must of...

    Diatoms Problems

i dont know much about diatoms, but i would question the 3 x 24 hot5 12 hours per day. that's an awful lot of light for a long time. 10 hours max. im running 2 for 6 hours on start of a new tank for about 6 weeks. slowly up it to about 8 hours.

    Cloudy Water Conundrum

would the same thing happen if you were running 2 filters? i mean clean one and leave the other, does the unleaned filter cancel out the cleaned filter?

    BGA treatment

theres not 1 that will prescribe. its illegal. i had to buy mine from the states. it cost about £30 to get my hands on some. ive got loads for emergencies. touching wood should never need them
