they look like nerite eggs to me too..
  2. Matt Holbrook-Bull

Isnt going as well as i thought it would *pics*

for easy EI try the calc in my sig. I swear by it.. its handy to convert to grams if you have a scale. Although TPN+ is technically still EI, using dry salts will enable you to fine tune each fert individually as you need... for example: GSA add more P04.

What water conditioner do you use?

request a water report from your supplier, that will tell you how much/if your water has chloramine or chlorine in it.. then you can make your choices from there.. its likely that inner city areas will probably have more in it due to water recycling, rural areas less so.

Can't send out P. Helferi - Really sorry - Have horrible luc

We would have to unstick the braces to get to anything.. its not impossible! We would have to cut the silicon out anyway, this isnt as hard as you might think... and sticking it back in again is a piece of cake. Anyway, if you feel like giving it a try, PM me and we'll try to sort something...

I had a tank off for 36 hours once.. wasnt an issue in any respect. Filter culture didnt even notice. Fish were fine even at 17C!! The trick is to warm things up veeeeery slowly.

    Advice needed on new set-up

Bank it up at the back as it helps make the tank look wider and you get more of a scape. One thing Ive noticed is that if its too shallow, it can be hard to get plants to stay put in as its quite light and moves around alot.. so Id aim for no shallower than 3cm at the front. Power sand under it...

Re: lfs dont know jack!!!! I was in my LFS last night buying shrimp. Got talking to the girl about planted tanks, turns out shes a big fan. she showed me a little display tank that shed set up, was really nice work although alot of it was melting due to no ferts. I was talking to her about...

    Some lfs dont know jack!!!!

Re: lfs dont know jack!!!! one of the problems we face in the hobby is the lack of knowledge in fish shops, together with lack of the stock we're all after. Some fish shop owners are approachable however to constructive criticism about their short comings. Occasionally, if you know the...

Removing Limescale from top of the tank

no.. using a stanley knife blade thats perfectly sharp is also perfectly flat.. therefore cant scratch the glass. Same as using a razor blade. Its by far the best way of removing algae and so long as you use good condition blades, the easiest way of doing it without scratching the glass.
  21. Matt Holbrook-Bull

Removing Limescale from top of the tank

thats what I do too.. get a bulk lot of stanley knife blades.. cut a slot in a 12 inch bean pole.. push a blade in and voila.. home made algae scraper. :) works a treat for anything like that

    smokey haze in tank

not sure.. make sure none of the culture from your DIY units has gone up the pipes.. any yeast in the tank could cause that. orrr.. 1) adding some trace mixes at the same time as PO4 can cause a white haze, Ive had this before but not noticed any odour tho. 2) make sure you clean out any...

whats the most stupid thing youve done this week?

I got to mine quickly by turning off the filters.. and syphoning it out quick.. kso4 is ok tho, its pretty inert. just my inverts Im worried about really.. they seem ok today tho. what a stupid thing to do!!!
  24. Matt Holbrook-Bull

whats the most stupid thing youve done this week?

mine is.... I weighed out my 1.66 grams of KSO4 into a container lid.. then instead of chucking the contents of the lid in, I chucked the entire pot in instead!!!!! I should dose in the morning when Im more with it!!

    Questions from a newby

to echo what the others have said really :) java ferns, anubias, vallis (which you have at the back, the tall straight grass like plants), some crypts all do fairly ok in low light. the trick is to have lots of plants, a heavy biomass will help guard you against any algae problems. DIY co2...

    what to do

I always treat T5 as being 1/3rd higher wattage than they are. But every setup differs.. just keep an eye on your plants, theyll seen tell you if theyre lacking in a nutrient.. if your dosing EI and theyre deficient, then the system is being driven harder than your dosing for, so just add more...
  31. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    what to do

To add to Sams post, read up on the estimative index (EI) method of fertilising the tank.. we have lots on the forum about it. it will take out all the guesswork. You can then use the calc in my signature to calculate how much you need to be adding. One note on that.. if your going to use...

really odd to behave like that  well, when you next see it, if you could let us know what make it was that would be good. how long have you had it? it may have some warranty on it if its a make such as JBL. always good to try new ideas and setups :) let us know how your new projects go

How the hell did that happen!

sudden introduction of co2 will now allow the plants to uptake nutrients.. if theyve been starved then theyll gorge themselves.. that could be happening. alternatively, tall stems like that, are much closer to the light source, so now they have what they need, theyll revel in the higher light...

  53. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Limiters

It isnt a cause, but a lack of it will cause the plants to stop growing, and therefore algae will grow instead. limiting your system via co2.. bad idea.. limit the system by light, thats the only way youll slow it down.. light is the main driving factor, not co2, co2 takeup is a CONSEQUENCE of...
  54. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Limiters

Any part of the cycle can limit growth. Light >drives> co2 take up >drives> nutrient takeup Ideally, you want to be limiting by light only. This will prevent algae taking advantage of an out of balance system. If your limiting by co2, then excess nutrients will be available to algae, thus...

White dots - what are these?

no problem :) there buggers for laying all over the shop, and theyre almost impossible to get off! they wont hatch however, which some aquarists like about them.

White dots - what are these?

they look like nerite snails eggs, have any nerite snails? if they are, they wont hatch as nerite snails need a period in salt water.
  60. Matt Holbrook-Bull

    Noob

I would say your low lighting is the secret of your success so far, having lower light has meant that the demand on your plants to absorb co2 and consequently, ferts, has been minimal, if you up your lighting, you should really investigate a more comprehensive dosing regiem, such as EI, and...

A tank based on UK ecology

Has anyone ever had a go at this? Raising a freshwater tank to closely follow local waters? Im sure that it would work, although youd have to be careful on what species you put in it, although there are a multitude of small uk river fish that would be quite spectacular.

    plants for discus tank

for co2, just buy a 2nd hand fire extinguisher off ebay (about £20 full) then you can fill it at any fire extinguisher place. tell them whats its for, and you need pure co2. cleaning wise, if your tank is running nicely, you should need to do more pruning than cleaning, getting critters like...

    plants for discus tank

i would go for the aquamedic or jbl regulator, buy a fire extinguisher off ebay for your co2 tank, and buy a decent diffuser such as a rhinox 5000.. at some point youll need a solenoid, as you shouldnt be adding co2 at night, but you can manually turn it on/off to start with depending on what...

    plants for discus tank

I would suggest doing the following: 1) read up on the estimative index method of dosing, its probable that your missing some important ferts. 2) get co2 sorted, and buy a drop checker to make sure your co2 is bang on (its the only way to tell) 3) your lighting is ok IF you were providing all...

    plants for discus tank

your probably going to struggle with tablet type co2, its goig to give very little on a water column that size. If your going to go full planted, youd need to invest in pressurised CO2. With co2 its important to do all or nothing, half way will cause you massive algae issues. how much light...
