I'd advise not going deeper than an inch with the soil to prevent gas buildup. Just a thought.

I'd advise against John Innes 3 it will send your hardness levels skyward.

I like the look of shallow tanks! I prefer my tanks to have lots of emersed growth, so shallow is well suited.

They are pre grown in "wabi kusa" and already rooted, so it's a matter if just placing the wabi kusa into the tank rather than planting each individual stem and waiting for it to root.

If I had low cost/free water all my tanks would be on a constant water change.

Rather than having it constant, set it to come on in the evenings and change overnight, therefore you can dose in the morning and fertilise throughout the day? Or something along those lines.

I'd agree with this. If excess nutrients were a big problem then EI wouldn't work.

A 9W arc pod over 7.5ltr is loads of light IMO.

Not sure how good the current light is, but I doubt there's a major need to upgrade with the plants you'll be using.

That seems like a lot of light, maybe try dropping it by a few hours a day and using less tubes. High lighting will fuel demand for nutrients and co2, of which you don't seem to have much of, especially with a substrate that contains no nutrients whatsoever. Have you heard of the Estimative...

I find the growth in low light set ups comparable to terrarium growth with high light, which is what I'm used to. Slow growth doesn't really bother me. I'm at the stage where I'm practising plant growing rather than scaping so I'm not too bothered if my tanks don't look so great.

Good advice. Sensitive species should really be added to mature tanks, mature not being just freshly cycled but stabilised with fish populations already and ideally with healthy plant mass. Join the low light fraternity Mark!

Your current plant stocking seems very low for a 180L, this would go someway in explaining your algae problems IMO. Lighting is pretty low already, how much excel were you dosing and what is your filtration/flow like? It's no use dosing excel if it's too little or not reaching your plants due...

In tropical aquariums I'd say the risk is low, for those using live rock in marine aquariums it always pays to be careful. You don't always know what's in that rock.

The type of science required for testing these projects isn't complicated, nor overly expensive. Anyone with a basic understanding of the scientific method could test these products. Maybe as individuals it wouldn't be so affordable, but there's no reason a magazine such as PFK couldn't perform...

As mentioned, peat isn't exactly environmentally sustainable. I have however discovered (accidentally) that eco earth (coir) is very good at tanning water. Stick a netted bag in your filter and voila. Cheap as hell.
