What is the best dirt for a dirt tank?

No2 will be fine, just less nutrients. I doubt there will be a massive difference. I'm using 3, fantastic for growing plants even beats the ADA stuff IMO. However, looking for something that doesn't raise the hardness of my already cement like water next time.

Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience.

Re: Low Energy, Water Changes, CO2, Algae, and Pseudoscience I find aquarium science interesting but I try not to actually apply it in this amount of detail to my tanks. What I mean by this is simply taking each tank on it's own terms and following a very broad set of guidelines which have been...

Can someone give me a hand with low tech lighting?

I have 3 of these. They're great! Mine are from growell's though but the model is exactly the same. £50 for 2 x 24w HO T5. Can't complain.

Question about soil, ammonia and water quality

Well said. My tank has basically gone through a fishless cycle without me doing anything, all levels are now down to zero from initial high spikes. I'm not using a filter so waiting a few more weeks for sufficient plant mass to develop before adding fish. I am totally, 100% converted to soil.

Question about soil, ammonia and water quality

I've had my tank set up for at least a few weeks and it appears the ammonia has only just settled down.

    Low tech and plants

This is what I do. 2 tbsps of trace mix into a bottle, add water. 2 tbsps of each NPK into a bottle, add water. Dose whenever, it's low light, no need to be strict or overly precise. I haven't followed any guidelines or sat and worked out anything out, just threw some random amounts into the...

    Low tech and plants

Most crypt species, there's dozens to choose from! Hygrophilia Polysperma would be fine. All the different amazon sword varieties, E tennellus, Dwarf Sag, anubias, java ferns. Not sure what's in the Nutrafin plant gro but for a low tech set up off the shelf mixes are usually fine. I do mix my...

New low tech tank idea, please advise

No just on it's own. I'm still new to planted tanks, I had a high tech which eventually went well but it was too much hassle, I much prefer this method. I literally add a bit of liquid carbon every so often and micro/macro ferts maybe twice a week. 50% water change every 6/7 days. Seems to be...

New low tech tank idea, please advise

I'll get some pics up soon to give you an idea, I imagine my tank is probably a similar size. It's mainly crypts, a few stem plants and some dwarf sag.

New low tech tank idea, please advise

The Arc pod is a T5 light so will be a little higher than a standard PL bulb of the same wattage right? I use a standard 11 watt PL light at 40cm tall and it's great for a low tech. Tank is around 8 gallons.
