UV Deepens Red colour of Cherry Shrimp

Hi All, This may already be common knowledge but I've made a bit of a discovery which has led me to question the grading of shrimp. I have pretty low grade Red Cherry Shrimp in terms of colouration. Every now and then I get a nice red one but generally they are dull and boring. As my aquarium...

    Corys - Shrimp Safe?

I didnt manage to find a shop selling Pygmys in the end, but I will keep looking

    Corys - Shrimp Safe?

My Otos survived months but died one by one. People tell me Otos should be very active feeders...mine never were. You rarely saw them eating so perhaps starvation. OK I'm out now trying to track down some pygmys

    Corys - Shrimp Safe?

I have loads of hairgrass that the shrimp hide in so I can't see it being a problem. Assuming Corys don't uproot it all. I have already had several Otos but they all died, they're the only fish that havn't done well in my setup. I have no idea why. All other fish I've had have been healthy

    Corys - Shrimp Safe?

Hi all, I have a 85 litre full of red cherries, am I safe to introduce a set of say 5 Corys? I don't want my shrimp turning into lunch or having their breeding effected. Thanks

    Visitor in my Aquarium

Yeah for now I've kept him in there, because my cherry shrimp are way too numerous now. Perhaps a little bit of natural order needs restoring. One damsel surely can't upset the balance. Ill keep an eye on it

I can't say I've ever seen is mum in my living room. How strange

    Visitor in my Aquarium

Is it a Damsel anyone?...In which case, if their larvae are anything like dragonflies I can guess that my shrimp and fish are on the dinner menu if I didnt catch it??

    Visitor in my Aquarium

Hi all, whilst trimming my hairgrass I came across this little fella in the bottom of my tank amongst the shrimp. Can anyone identify? I recognise the three pronged tail!?

    Escaping Shrimps

I had this problem...it turned out that my co2 was too high. Not had a problem since lowering my gas.

    Miniscule Shrimp?

Ive realised what these things are now, Ive spotted a berried Amano shrimp which has led to me trawling youtube for breeding techniques, the Amano "Zoes" look just like what im seeing. Presumably mine wont survive in my tank, I'll need to do a salt water setup.

    Miniscule Shrimp?

Also just seen a 6ml long thin white worm type thing under the substrate. Any chance these are parasites and worms from the pet shop....I bought new fish last week and the bag came with a pond snail so there could have been other pond critters I guess Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk

    Miniscule Shrimp?

Hi all, I appreciate this may be difficult without photos but believe me, you wouldn't see them anyway! I am seeing tiny, and I mean tiny signs of life just below the top of the substrate (tmc nutrasoil). They are moving just like my cherry shrimp, walking slowly then zipping an inch or so...

    Stowaway Snail

I have just the one baby and he's in the tank. Turns out he climbed out the fish bag and in. Do Physella reproduce from one then? Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk

    Stowaway Snail

Ooops....I appear to have lost it anyway. I either eccidentally tipped it down the sink when I drained water from the pet shop bag or its climbed out of the bag and into my aquarium whilst the bag was floating...I guess I'll find out with time. Its only a baby I think. Its tiny

    Stowaway Snail

This snail jumped in with a bag of ember tetras, looks like a pond snail to me. Question is, if I allow this one snail in, is it one that breeds alone and will cause infestation? Sent from my XT890 using Tapatalk

    Dropped Shrimp Eggs

Hi all, Maybe a question answered before but searching is more difficult without my laptop. I've recently found a few baby shrimp in my tank after a week or so of losing sight of my berried female cherries. Today I find a whole clutch of eggs on the substrate, they don't appear to have black...

    Shrimp - Open Top Tanks

Hi All, Has anyone else had issues with shrimp and fish jumping out of the tank onto the floor. In 1.5 Months ive found 1 crusty Cardinal Tetra and about 5 crusty Male Cherry Shrimp on the floor. The males seem to be the open swimmers whereas the females stay on the substrate which may explain...

    Selecting Males for Breeding

Not intending to draw this thread away from its original question, but when looking to increase the grade of your shrimp (say you have a mixed bunch to start with), would it make sense to let them all breed at first, then perhaps try and sell on all of your low grade females and pretty much all...

Shrimp Eggs - Fertilised / Unfertilised?

At what stage shrimp eggs fertilised? Is it before any eggs become visible? During the visible yellow eggs inside the body stage? or whilst the eggs are attached to her tail on the outside of her body? I have many shrimp with yellow eggs showing internally and have realised that I seem to be...

    Shrimp Mineral Supplement

Hi all, I've just been rooting through some old packed away fishy bits and came across a bottle of Shrimp mineral supplement which came with a freebie tank from PFK, on the bottle it says "general hardness increaser" Presumably in a hard water area this stuff is not necessary?

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

I have the co2 going off half hour after because I'm told plants don't immediately stop photosynthesising when the lights go off. Surface agitation id say is no worse than anyone else that uses Lilys, its not as good as spray bar but it does ripple like other peoples

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

If it was co2 killing them id expect it to happen in the evening, I have the co2 going off Pretty soon after lights out so the levels shouldn't be high over night, which is when its happening. But perhaps they are just moulting....I wish the little buggers were easy to count! Sent from my...

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

To be honest I don't actually know...people have commented that my drop checker looks very green and felt that more was needed, however my bubble counter seems to count 3-4 bps at least (maybe small bubbles but it seems excessive) There seems to be very little gas wasted in terms of rising to...

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

In a sense, I bought them in a pot so I submerged the pot so that it was in the water secured to the edge of the tank. I left it there for a few hours and just put pipettes of my water in in exchange for their water every so often. I was only given about 300ml of their own water which isn't...

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

I have seen one floating head, and one exoskeleton-less prawn but other than that its been all exoskeletons on their own. I was aware of moulting but presumed it was a seasonal thing. Ill keep an eye on them. If my numbers dont drop I'll assume theyre not dying. The reason I thought they were...

    Shrimp Losses, Normal?

Hi all, This may be a question which begs the answer "Course not you idiot", but I think It needs asking... Is it normal to get shrimp deaths in the first week of owning them? I got 30 Cherrys three nights ago and have already lost 5-6, about 2 each night, I get up to find empty shrimp...

    Shrimp Safe Inlet Height

Hi All, Question, How high would your filter inlet need to be in order to prevent shrimp getting sucked into the filter? I have bought a mesh filter guard but after having spent the money on a glass inlet Ive decided I dont like the eyesore! I have seen Inlets that are designed to sit at...

Great, the guard doesn't fit the inlet! Not long enough. Looking at the slits in the glass I can't see how anything could get through it, fry maybe but nothing larger??

    Filter Inlet - Shrimp

Hi All, Anyone know if Ill need some mesh or a cover for the end of my filter inlet if I have shrimp? I have a pretty high flow filter in relation to my tank (Tetratec EX1200 for a 60x45x30 Tank) so im worried that shrimp will get hoovered by my Easy Aqua glass inlet (below)...
