I think one of the things a prime lens does is really make you think about the composition. You actually need to move around to get the right distance, rather than twiddle the zoom ring. This is making you go back to basics.
I bought the cheap nifty fifty prime canon lens and it is great. Cost me £45. Cheap plastic not an L lens but the speed and price were so attractive.
