I feel like I'm going crazy. Is this Salvinia Natans? It looks slightly different to photos online. Many thanks!

    Sword deficiency?

Thanks Darrel, really helpful. The damage does look just like that photo. I do feed them Courgette but the Amano shrimp make quick work of it before the otos can get a look in... I think I'll add two pieces next time!

    Sword deficiency?

I don't have plecs. So is it the otos?
  5. Sacha

    Sword deficiency?

Thanks for the reply. I do have Amano Shrimp and ottos, who have probably been having a nibble. But still the leaves shouldn't be withering and dying. I use the term "duckweed index" loosely as I know any floating plants can be used to diagnose the deficiency... So you think the issue is...

    Sword deficiency?

Hi all, I'm having some trouble growing swords in my low-tech. See attached photo - the leaves get lots of little holes in them and eventually die and wither away. This is in contrast to the other plants e.g. crypts which seem to be fairly healthy (see photo). I added some root tabs over the...

    Why are my anubias dying?

Hi all, Some of you have been following my tank log. So far so good except for one annoying problem. My anubias do not seem to be rooting to the rocks, in fact the rhizomes / rosettes / roots are rotting and dying. I have had this problem before but never got to the bottom of it. All other...

Fe, Mg or other deficiency? (with pictures)

Here, I've even copied the relevant chunk here for you. The central role of RuBisCO in the process of photosynthesis means that it must be tightly regulated, to ensure that it is active only where and when it should be. One important layer of this regulation is the activation of RuBisCO at...

Fe, Mg or other deficiency? (with pictures)

Split photoperiod is never a good thing. http://ukaps.org/forum/threads/ei-calculators.26669/#post-277421 Please carefully read this article about Rubisco. after reading it you will understand why you shouldn't have a split photoperiod.

Carpet plant and Mid-ground plants melting. Kindly advice.

Do you need to increase the bubble rate if you switch to the intake? As in, is some Co2 lost in the filter?

Carpet plant and Mid-ground plants melting. Kindly advice.

Clive, I see you advocate the use of carbon and purigen. Could you briefly explain the benefits of using purigen in a planted tank?

Thanks. I like the look of Fissidens so might try that out. Cheers!

    Moss that clings?

I have some christmas moss attached to some Mopani wood. The problem is that it never attaches itself to the wood, meaning that the moss floats up and comes apart very easily. I know that xmas moss is one of the mosses that doesn't attach itself. So I was wondering which other mosses I could try...

Please can you identify these aquatic plants

Yep, 2 and 3 are house plants.
  15. Sacha

Can you identify this plant plz

Sorry. It's 'Trident'. Not 'narrow'. http://tropica.com/en/plants/plantdetails/Microsorumpteropus'Trident'(008G)/4424
  16. Sacha

Can you identify this plant plz

    It's a Tropica plant

Yeah it's the same as mine. Microsorum Pteropus 'narrow'

    Planting advice

If you're spending £50 on plants, you want to make sure they don't all die. Are you using Co2, liquid carbon or ferts? What is your lighting?

    Plant I.D please

Under high light, the whole plant will turn bright red.

    Plant I.D please

Ludwigia Repens "Rubin". I bought some yesterday!

    Help me choose a moss!

NattyAntlers kindly sent me some Xmas moss which I have now attached to the wood. To be honest I'm very fed up because I spent about an hour messing around with fishing line, and despite my efforts, loads of the moss is just detaching itself as the fish peck at it. Also it doesn't even...

    Which Stem Plant?

The Repens will be more red and require less light to show its red colour. I only suggest it because I prefer the shape of Palustris.
  28. Sacha

    Which Stem Plant?

Alternatively, you could just buy Ludwigia Palustris Red :)
  29. Sacha

    Which Stem Plant?

I think Ludwigia Palustris looks nicer than Ludwigia Repens. It's probably my favourite plant.
  30. Sacha

    Which Stem Plant?

Ludwigia Palustris Hygrophila Polysperma Myriophyllum Elodea Those are some of my favourites.

    Help me choose a moss!

I want to buy a moss to attach to the mopani wood in my tank. It's the bare bit of wood in the left half of the picture. I definitely want to buy a pot of Tropica 1- 2- Grow! I have narrowed my choice down to the following: Weeping Moss Christmas Moss Flame Moss Taxiphyllum Barbieri...

    Help- planting Staurogyne Repens

My Stauro just arrived. It's a Tropica 1- 2- Grow! pot. I've separated it into about 12 different plantlets. The problem is, I see no roots! Literally can't see how I'm going to plant it into the substrate! Any advice?
  40. Sacha

    Staurogyne Repens care?

Yep, makes sense. I will try that then. Thanks guys. I still tend to get a lot of aerial roots which look messy. Looking at people's tanks on this site, there are no aerial roots in site! Is there some secret about how to prevent them?
  41. Sacha

    Staurogyne Repens care?

Great, thanks for a clear and thorough reply. I don't actually trim stem plants in that way. I uproot them, cut off the bottom half, and replant the top half. I used to trim the top and replant, but I found that the bottom half would just branch out elsewhere and just get lots of ugly aerial...

    Staurogyne Repens care?

I have just ordered a 1- 2- Grow! pot of Staurogyne Repens. I have never kept this plant before so was looking for some advice about how to plant it and how to maintain and look after it. What is the best way to trim/ propagate it? If anyone has bought the 1- 2- Grow Staurogyne before...

  44. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Alright I will go for S. Repens. I prefer the look of it anyway. Is it agreed that I should buy the Tropica 1-2- Grow pot?
  45. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

    Conflicting opinions...
  46. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

My cory are notorious for uprooting delicate plants. Do you think it's easier to grow then?
  47. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Wait, is glosso easier to grow than Staurogyne?
  48. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Yep- that's definitely my problem- the flow low down, along the substrate. The spray bar manages ok I think- I guess I will never know until I try?
  49. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

So you don't think I'd be able to achieve something like this?
  50. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Is that meant to say "I've always"? If so- LOL. I know I will have to work hard, but I have everything I need. High light, high Co2, loads of flow, and loads of ferts (I dose EI daily). My substrate is nutritious. I have a layer of Tetraplant Complete, capped with a layer of Unipac Senegal...
  51. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Hmm looks nice- good suggestion. I tried Hydrocotyle in the past and got rid of it because a) It would not stay in the substrate and b) it threw out loads of aerial roots which look awful!
  52. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

They are all easy. From left to right: Hygrophila Corymbosa Siamensis Ludwigia Palustris Hygrophila Polysperma Java fern on wood More Ludwigia at the back More Hygrophila in the right corner So really I have just chosen fast- growing stem plants, because in the past I have had trouble...
  53. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

Hmm I prefer the look of a slightly broader, larger plant like Staurogyne. Exposure on that photo was low- my tank lighting is actually pretty high. Lighting is 56 Watts before reflectors. I think that's about 1.7 WPG?
  54. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

    Should be ok now.
  55. Sacha

    Staurogyne or Glossostigma?

I want to add a foreground carpeting plant to my tank. I can't choose between Staurogyne Repens, Staurogyne Rubescens, or Glosso. I have read that Staurogyne Rubescens is easier to grow than Repens? Which is the easiest to grow out of all these plants? I have not been lucky with carpets in...
