Hi all,
I have a well-planted massively filtered Juwel Rio 125. No Co2 anymore but I use a mix of RO and tap water: TDS ranges between 150-250.
Current inhabitants:
Approximately 20 Cardinal Tetras
5 Corydoras Trilineatus
5 Silvertip Tetras
2 Pentazona Barbs
2 Zebra Danios
2...
I do have areas of weaker flow, but that is mostly in the back of the tank in hidden areas where the fish wouldn't be visible. So I think they'd probably spend all their time hiding out of sight.
I am having a bit of a re- stock of my tank and am thinking of maybe getting a pair of rams. First of all, will they be too territorial for my current fish?
125 litre heavily planted tank:
17 cardinal tetras
3 Pentazona barbs
2 corydoras trilineatus
3 zebra danios
I used to have more...
I would really like to get a few glass catfish, but I have read that they don't like high flow. Is this right? Would 6-7 of them be ok in my Rio 125, with massive flow? (2250 lph combined through two spray bars)
Yes I tried feeding them algae wafers, courgette, cucumber etc. They didn't know what it was.
They ignore all the other food that goes in the tank e.g. bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, tubifex, rotifers, cyclops, red plankton..........
I have just noticed there are small holes in my hygrophila (it's being eaten).
The only possible culprits are the ottos.
Does this mean they're starving?
How can I feed them, to stop them resorting to eating the plants?
They've ignored all the food I've put in up to now.
Thanks. I just read that they grow up to 4 inches. If I need to keep them in a group of at least 6, it sounds like things might get a bit crowded for a 100 litre tank.
Has anyone kept these fish? Any tips/ advice? Will they do ok in my tank?
125 litre planted (co2) tank:
KH 2-3
GH 5-6
TDS 200-230
pH 6.2- 7.2
Temperature 23.5-25.5
Fauna:
15 x cardinal tetra
3 x Pentazona barb
3 x corydoras trilineatus
4 x otocinclus
3 x zebra danio
1 x zebra...
ADC order their fish from Danna. Last time my LFS ordered Hastatus from Danna, they got Pygmaeus. And the guy tried to argue that they were Hastatus. They weren't.
Maidenhead Aquatics get their fish from Danna too, so you can go there if it's closer than ADC. The fish all come from the same...
Thanks Ian. My main "dirt" in the tank is diatoms and green dust algae on the glass. So I'm hoping they will help with that.
Do you have any idea why you lost the three?
I'm really keen to get some ottos for my tank. Mainly because I like the fish, but also for a clean- up crew/ algae control.
Just wondering if they'd thrive in the environment. The tank is a Juwel Rio 125, heavily planted with a small amount of wood. Inhabitants are 15 cardinal tetras, 4...
That's a Chinese algae eater, and quite a malnourished one. They're often sold as "golden sucking loach".
They get quite aggressive as they get older, and they stop eating algae after a couple of years. They are often mis- sold to people as a good, small algae eater. They are not a community...
I have recently been looking into getting some Otocinclus. But there are quite a few different varieties. Which is the most popular/ best small oto for a community tank?
Tankmates are tetras, Pentazona barbs and cory. Temp is 24-27 in the summer, and pH is around 6-7.
Anything I should know...
Esha 2000- general bacterial problems.
Melafix- a general tonic. Good for new fish and especially cory.
Waterlife anti- whitespot- for ich
Kusuri wormer plus- for internal parasites
Clove oil- the last resort (euthanasia)
Apart from that, pristine RO water, weekly 50% changes, a good diet.
I am trying to give you the best advice possible. It may not be what you want to hear. But the truth is, the best thing you can add to the tank is more barbs. I am thinking about the welfare and health of all your fish when I say this
Well they are your pets so they depend on you to look after them and care for them. They are also living animals with feelings.
Frankly, if you can't care for your current fish properly, you should re- home them. Definitely don't buy any more fish that the tiger barbs will likely just attack...
Tiger barbs are not community fish and are best in a species tank, so the only reasonable thing to suggest is buy more tiger barbs to disperse the aggression.
What are the 'black red barbs'? They need to be in a group of 6 minimum too.
Chlorine/ chloramine is actually harmless to fish.
It kills nitrobacter and nitrosomonas though, which means it destroys your biological filtration, which in turn will hurt the fish.
I am really keen to add a pair of German blue rams to my tank.
Tank is a Juwel Rio 125. Current inhabitants:
4 zebra danios (very old)
5 pentazona barbs
7 corydoras trilineatus
17 cardinal tetras
1 zebra nerite snail
This tank is using pressurised Co2 injection and I use RO water on it...
