Have a read up on things like Golden ratios. It's all about getting a good balance between shapes and not causing too much "tension" (when shapes conflict with each other and just look odd). Generally, if you can look at it and it doesn't feel awkward then you're on the right track :)

Definitely echo what Ian says. Imitate until you feel comfortable enough to try your own style. Also, why not arrange a UKAPS mini meet? It's great fun having a bunch of UKAPS types over and sharing a few beers while playing with sticks and stones :D I seem to remember spending hours...

    How to make a aquascaping?

It's worth mentioning that Octopus' tanks are quite complex. He's posted a number of jorunals for some of them over on Planted Tank and Aquascaping world. Some of them are deceptively small! Decide what sort of style you like - rocks, wood, jungle etc etc and then try to find some...

    Aquascape Design Ideas

I think with the size of the rocks and wood compared to the depth of the tank, I'd do as NRY suggests. You could make quite a nice mound with that hardscape, with plants such as ferns etc poking out. Maybe off centre to the left or right, and plant behind it with stems, and something shorter...

    Help needed

Great start Albert :) When the plants fill in around the wood it will look a lot more natural. I'd be tempted to group the rocks on the left closer together, they look a little un natural at the moment. That being said, things will come together when the plants fill in. What are you planting?

ADA Seiryu Stone vs Mini Landscape Rock

Only issue with buying online is that you aren't able to pic out individual pieces, and match them up. You don't get to fondle it first! Of course, if you're good at describing what you want it's less of an issue :)
  17. Steve Smith

Thoughts on my new scape and bad piccies :)

It's good sometimes, as you can sit and look at it from the sofa, and then play about with the hardscape a bit more  Just don't over egg the pudding! :) Knowing when to stop fiddling with a scape is something I'm trying to get to grips with.
  18. Steve Smith

Thoughts on my new scape and bad piccies :)

I think it looks fine! The side shot looks way better than the front shot for some reason. I think the front shot you don't get a sense depth? Might be the depth of the substrate at the front but not sure :) Either way, it's looking great :)
  19. Steve Smith

Thoughts on my new scape and bad piccies :)

That's a great start mate :) I think I'm with James on the left rock. It looks a little too triangular. Obviously, as you say, it'll depend on how you plant it :)

    2*1*1 plant placement

It's difficult to tell from the photo, but I suspect that you will struggle with the depth to fit both H. Polysperma and Rotala Sp. at the back. Especially around the rocks on the left. H. Polysperma has quite long leaves also, so may look out of scale. How about something like Bacopa...

    What rock might this be...?

Welcome Emma! I can't really see from the photos what the rock is. It sort of looks quite rough, like lava rock, but I can't be sure. Going by the title "Rives volcaniques" it could be volcanic rock of some sort (lava rock). Bigger image here: http://www.aquagora.fr/CAPA2009/PHOTOS/ ...

Re: A different Iwagumi! I really like that George! It seems weird to say that, when there's no plants, but it works well :) I can imagine the rocks looking more aged with the odd bit of algae on them when the scape has aged a bit more

Hi Ewan. The site looks fantastic! I like the concept of users being able to rate their favourite scapes, but the fact that the user can have a page dedicated, with a coherent URL is something I've not really seen on other aquascaping sites. Congrats on a great website

I'm not sure Paul. Maybe in the short term but I wouldn't like to say for definite!
  36. Steve Smith

    Stopping redmoor from floating

You could drill a hole in the base of each piece (that would be hidden) and tie wrap it to a piece of slate. The slate will lie under the substate hidden and hold the redmoor down.
  37. Steve Smith

Manzanita wood - now in the UK

I guess it's less dense compared to redmoor. Redmoor is usually dry inside if I snap a chunk off a large piece. Seems to only absorb water to a few millimeters.

It might be in the uploading of the image mate. Jpeg files by their very nature are compressed, and therefor have lost some image detail. If you further reduce the quality then you'll lose even more detail. It's all about getting the best quality, yet a file size that's not too large for...

Quick question Dave... I notice the glassware you're using looks like the ones regularly seen on eBay. I've been looking for 2 sets for my 2x ex1200 setup and had discounted these as I didn't like the look of the outlet. How do you find them? Do you get a good flow pattern from them? Do you...

    Aquascaping a triangular tank

I wonder what a sort of bursting open style wood scape would look like. What I mean is, if you positioned some nice redmoor style wood so that it was bursting forwards and out, from the rear/corner of the tank. You could have a few central/off centre plants and maybe long vallis/cyprus...
