friends tank , can these be saved?

To add to what Ady has said, they could have a trim and remove the worst affected leaves also. Good maintenance and getting a handle on conditions should bring it back though.

    sae's

They're nice fish though I've heard they can get aggressive with each other in small groups. Also, they'll possibly nom on juicy fresh new moss growth, so something to be aware of :)

Anyone want to buy algae by the bucket load! PROBLEMS! HELP!

Re: Anyone want to buy algae by the bucket load! PROBLEMS! H If you have leaves which are dying off, they need to be trimmed and removed. As they decay they'll be helping the algae out even more. I would also consider removing leaves which are badly covered in algae. I'd be a little...

Anyone want to buy algae by the bucket load! PROBLEMS! HELP!

Re: Anyone want to buy algae by the bucket load! PROBLEMS! H I think the first thing I would do is drop your lighting down. Try reducing the photo period to 5 or 6 hours. You would probably be fine using half the light as well. You don't say how heavily your tank is planted, and what plants...

What's this on the glass? Start of diatoms?

Yeah, googling around I see what you mean! Do you have Cories Amanda?

What's this on the glass? Start of diatoms?

They sort of look like eggs to me? Any snails in the tank?

    Cheers Paul :)

Liquid Carbon for BBA, but which product ?

I believe they are all made to similar "recipes". There was a lengthy discussion on the safety of these products late last year, which got a little heated, but there was a lot of info about each product and what they contain. It may help with your decision in terms of knowing what's in each...

Surface film, start of Algae? or nothing to worry about?

This has been discussed a few times in the past :) Some say it's lack of CO2, some say it's plants not getting enough ferts. Take a read here: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=8525&p=93427&hilit=oily+film#p93427

    Penicillin in the aquarium !?

I suspect it's to try and kickstart any bacteria. I've read similar things to be honest. Use google and search for "Fishless Cycling". A different way to do it is to dose Amonia on a regular basis and then test for it. When the tank/filter start to process something like 30ppm of amonia in...

    Green film on water

I would consider upping your water changes to maybe 3 times a week if possible. I can't say what it is, but likely the onset of an algae outbreak, such as green water. Have you changed anything recently, or moved any substrate/hardscape around lately?

bright orange slime on co2 pipes?

I get this a lot also. I think it's proteins and general gunk build up. I assumed it was normal to be honest  :shifty:

    Algae on Cyperus

My Cyperus tends to get coated in a brown diatom like algae. Not got hair algae on it, though I have it in other places. I need to trim off a lot of the old leaves. I'm dosing EI and excessive CO2! (No livestock yet).

Planted Discus Tank - Loads of Algae

Light levels are not as important as CO2 levels, although the more light you add the more CO2 and nutrients you'll need. It sounds as if you have enough light IMO. 5 hours of light seems ok as clearly your plants are using up the carbon in that time. As you get things sorted, and get to grips...

    how to kill algae?

Interesting question about the Eleocharis. I don't think you can do it this way. It usually spreads via runners under the substrate, which pop up new clusters of shoots ever few cm. Let us know if they grow though :)

    fighting blue green algae

I'd echo what TLH is saying. Thankfully I've not had to combat BGA too much. Removal and a black out is a good place to start. Absolute blackout though. No peaking!

    Anubias and Greenspot

I have a whole heap of dry ferts, I could send you some KH2PO4 if you'd like... Only needs to be dosed a tiny amount per day (check the EI article on the main site). PM me your address and I'll get a little off in the post to you.

    Anubias and Greenspot

I've just bought some, but not started using it yet so couldn't really say... I know Dan and George, amongst others, have used the whole range of EasyLife products.

    Anubias and Greenspot

I believe green spot algae can be tackled with increased phosphate, but may also be down to poor CO2/circulation in that area of your tank. Check out JamesC's excellent algae guide here: http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm

    Algae in my Fissidens

It looks very healthy though :) That second algae looks a bit like BBA or Cladophora maybe? Couldn't tell with the first type, looks like lovely healthy moss to my untrained eye :)

    Green Water - Whats Best?

I ended up buying a Vecton UV when I had problems on my Rio 180. It cleared it up within a few days. Of course, you're then left with it reducing your flow a little. I removed it after a while but went through big tank re-scapes etc, and didn't get green water again. Can't be sure if the...

    Don't BIN that Algae!

Ah, I remember seeing something about this a few months back, on some random video website. They have like a large greenhouse type setup, but with tall rows of plastic bag containers I believe. Algae/water is pumped through and exposed to sunlight if memory serves. It was in the research...

BGA in a low light aquarium

You can do either. Personally I measure the dry powders into a plastic beaker with a sealable lid and add some water, screw the lid on, give it a shake untill the powders disolve and then pour it into the tank into the filter flow :)
