Yeah, it was in a box, with thin half cm thick polystyrene around the outside of the box and then a layer of bubble wrap. All wrapped in a black plastic bag. Not great packaging! In hindsight, the glass is actually quite thin (4mm). I'll be getting a full refund so I think I'm going to shop...

New filter arrived today, a JBL Cristalprofi e402. It looks like a great little filter and I’m pleased to say it fits the cabinet. I’ll need to make a hole for the hoses but that will be easy enough. I’ve also ordered the new tank, so hopefully I’ll have that next week. Quick picture to show...

The upgraded tank will fill the cabinet completely (cabinet is an IKEA Eket combo), which is why I have to find a 35x35cm cube. And, the filter needs to fit into the bottom section of the cabinet, which measures 31.5cm x 31.5cm x 31.5cm internally. The JBL filter apparently measures 28.8cm tall...

Hi Ady. I meant your water change pump you mentioned. Can't think of anything small enough to fit inside your water containers so assumed you used some sort of external pump? - Is it just an Eheim or something?

So I was in my local Pets at home the other day and spotted a really poor grade black CRS. After looking more closely I spotted 5 or 6 CRS shrimplets and another adult too. I walked out of there with the 2 adults, which he charged me less for, and all the shrimplets he could get out for free...

Renamed the journal :) Also, I now have a black backing for the tank which I think makes it look a little better. Need to try attaching it to the glass instead of the wall behind though, as I'm getting some reflection.

Yeah, the weeping moss that was 1-2 grow has really changed colour this last week :) Lovely lush green instead of pasty yellow :lol: I've upped the lighting by an hour to 5 1/2 hours as of the other day too. Should probably look to do another water change soon!

Hmn. This is a bit annoying. The timer plugs turned up today, and don't seem to work with my 11w light unit. They're dimmer plugs which I assumed would be OK, but it appears that when you switch them on they fade in. Annoyingly this only seems to work with incandescent lighting.

At least with these, a new remote unit is about £10. No screens on the plug unit. Heck, if it doesn't work out it's £15 and I've got a bunch of analog timers still.

Pots seem to be quite generous then. I've bought potted staurgyne in the past and I recall getting 5 - 10 stalks at most.

Its pretty crowded in there, from a wood perspective. The floating piece will eventually be arched down to the substrate. I'm thinking about some staurogyne at the rear right. There a steel mesh with some creeping moss back there though. As for up front, its not as deep as it perhaps looks...

How is your flow to the substrate? Issues are generally related to getting CO2 and nutrients to every part of the tank where the plants are. Lighting is less of an issue as long as CO2 and nutrients are sufficient. It may be worth doing water changes a little more frequently while everything...

Lovely looking tank, and amazing looking discus! Plant growth looks good too :) If I can offer constructive criticism, the large wooden branch doesn't look very natural to my eyes. Does it give a good place for the discus to spawn? Natural looking or not, it's a nice bit of wood :)

You could drop the water level to help with the light levels if you're concerned that there's not enough light. In reality, things are probably melting as they are probably emerse growth.

Yes, it takes ages but it can make a difference :) I tend to like doing this when no one else is around and sort of zone out. Almost meditative.

My first thought would be to make it a cross section of a stream with woodland either side. May not really get a lot of planting going on, so it would be all about the hardscape and fauna. Mosses for accents etc.

Actually, as it's a nice large tank, you could look at some of the larger leaved anubias to give you some different leaf shapes.

Have a read about pruning techniques. The Rotala could be made to bush out nicely, and of course you get to re-plant the trimmings - Pruning - A general guide to plant maintenance | UK Aquatic Plant Society Anubias would look nice attached to some of the sumatra I think. Perhaps closer to...

I would separate them out into small bunches of maybe 10 or so stems and plant about 1cm apart. Takes a while though!

Well, after some discussion and advice, I've decided what it is I want to do. Hardware still all the same. Stocking with lower grade Crystal Red Shrimp (on a budget unfortunately). I'll be using Ebi Gold substrate and Salty Shrimp GH/KH+ along with RO. I will be getting an RO unit next week...
