You are right about the bigger dof with the smaller sensor on the iPad. To get a closer dof in the camera you’d need high f stops 16-22 but that requires a lot more light, hence you will need the flash. It all comes down to physics at the end of the day though and you’ll never get a larger dof...

They are all pretty good as long as you don't want to do any low light stuff as they don't let enough light in for that. daytime stuff would be fine though. If you did go for the Sigma I'd look for the APO version instead of the one you listed as it has better glass.

I picked up a Damian McGillicuddy 19" Beauty Dish yesterday for use at the weddings I cover. I wanted to test it but my wife and daughters went to bed so the dog volunteered for biscuits instead! The dish itself is really sturdy and collapsable but I haven't practiced how long that takes...

Ive got some videos taken on my canon 5d mk ii of my nano that I want to piece together and change the soundtrack but unfortunately I dont have any software to do this. Is anyone aware of any cheap or freeware video editing programs that can work with the .mov files that comes out of the canon...

dont bother with the 300d, its just too old and slow nowadays and im not sure if its compatible with the EFS system? the 350d on the other hand is a great camera second hand. Ive taken some of my best photos on a 350d and the sensor is the same as what was in the 20d and 30d.

its 50mm on a full frame so around 30mm on crop depending on your make of camera. Im not sure you could limit the use of UWA in competitions when Amano uses it himself in some of this shots by the look of them. (not sure whether its UWA on an SLR or the large format equivalent he uses?) eg...

really nice photos george. Did you look at the 24-70 f2.8 when you were considering lenses? I went for that over the f4 due to the extra stop of light (handy for dark churches!)

Nope, definately the same lens with a 52mm filter Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens Canon EOS 50mm/F1.8 Ef Lens (Mk11) The 50mm lens (nifty 50) is an excellent first lens to buy as its a prime lens (doesnt zoom), its very very sharp for the money and can be used in low light.

I see where youre coming from mark. I think my shrimp tank picture in my sig was direct off studio. Markwebb would still need to buy stands for his flashes though unless he has four hands :) or do what theyve dont on the pic below Id quite like to go down the softbox router or at least try it...

id say for taking picks of tanks you may get more use out of a softbox and a boom so you can position it above your tank. You can then use a single flash then for the whole tank and use the second for rear flash or something. Thats what id go for anyway. Have you seen the guides on the CAU...

ive not used brollys with my speedlights but done it with stofens pointed down from above. The problem I always have is that my flash cable is too short so ive tended to use studio lights on stands as its easier, like this usually

i did a quick n dirty comparison at different focal lengths on the 10-22mm. Pic is below, sorry for the size but it needs to be big really. Its quite surpising that the 10mm makes teh 90cm look square with the depth it shows! Probably wont be photographing mine at 10mm due to this but it also...

There does look to be a bit of distortion on this one but its not a straight on shot so you will get some wobble at angles. George, if you want I can take some pics of my tank straight on tonight to see if theres any distortion but this doesnt answer your sigma question unfortunately. Maybe...

im not entirely sure on barrel distorion on the sig 10-20mm although it is a really good lens, probably best to check with someone whose got one. I got the canon 10-22mm at a time when it was cheap(ish) compared to now (£430 and UK sourced). There's no (or hardly any) barrel distortion on the...

I got a cheap one from ebay (bout £15). Ive seen the canon one and it seems that the cheapos are made in the same factory, they just dont have the canon stamp!

lol! I thought it might be a case of that. Ive seen them mounted on racks which are geared to slowly roll the whole calera forwards and backwards for the focus. Such a tight DOF but such an ace lens!

before you disapear Tom is there any advice youve got on any PS processing (if you used any) to get the clouds to stand out so well? Ive tried in the past to use a grad in lightroom on the scky and reduce the exposure and bump contrast but it never comes out like that!

You can get away with it handheld as you can recompose before the clouds move. Its when its on a tripod that you get the main problems with clouds and wind. Amazing picture Tom, such detail to it with the light and drk areas :) Sorry to hear youre stopping your tanks but in a worthwhile...

just to take it slightly off topic. we used mac minis on my photography course in college this year and after a full term of them I was glad to get rid and back to my PC. I know they are great and they are designed for DTP but I just couldnt get my head around the way the op-sys worked...
