Re: Tropica Substrate Problems I had it capped by zambezi gravel. The only cloudiness I had was when I uprooted the plants and replanted but that didn't last long if I cleaned up the mess.

Tip: Use a plastic bag to cover the substrate/plants and pour the water slowly on the bag. That way, it shouldn't mix up the plants and substrate.

If it's AquaSoil 2, then it can cloud according to reports. There shouldn't really be a problem re-using aquasoil.

TBH, my HC has taken a while in my nano to fully carpet. I've taken two steps recently, (1) firstly I added more KNO3 - massive change, it started to grow! (2) I've now added pressurised co2, so it's bright green now.

Re: Bad expereinces with ADA AS I can only sing it's praises, whilst the current exchange rate with the Euro won't make it a cheap substrate, you know you're getting good stuff. The powder makes planing fine plants like HC a doddle. Just make sure you cycle the filter well before adding livestock.

Just to add, that I was never sure if the cloud was from the substrate or just muck.

In both ADA Aquasoil Amazonia and Tropica Planted Substrate capped by gravel meant that I'd get clouding if I messed with the substrate. It's never been too bad but could be easily resolved in an hour or so with filter floss or a few water changes.

Sorry to hear about your fish losses. Thats half the problem about swapping substrate and especially to Aquasoil Amazonia, that's why I'm thinking of moving (when I do) using Oliver Knott's Nature Soil.

My amazonia (1) has been in my nano for nearly a week with off the scale ammonia, but that's with an uncycled filter. I'd advise to keep an eye out.

Wow, I got way lost in that argument. It seems that Power Sand does not provide any tangible benefits for plant growth, although what I've come to believe is to be over cautious with things. I think anything that could possibly help should be at least considered.

I think to get the best out of Aquasoil you'd need to use the bacter, powersand and the rest of the ADA substrate system. That's when it gets expensive! Although, I believe it would be well worth it.

Thanks, it looks rather nice. My plans are to do a similar re-do of my tank but after looking at the photos would drain everything out before. How quickly after adding everything can I put fish back in?

I understand that the Eco Complete substrate doesn't require anything on top of it like gravel? Could someone point me in the direction of some photos of this substrate so I can see what it looks like once settled.
