    One way to combat the initial ammonia leeching would be to perform a blackout until the ammonia spike has gone? Just keep performing daily water changes and covering up. I would of thought that with no filtration this spike could be present for some time.

    I've never heard of anyone attaching hairgrass to hardscape - not saying it won't work, just never heard/seen it. Maybe look into some plant weights if it comes out of the substrate easily. Some of mine did it after a while and the shrimps pulling it out, it get a pain but in time it took hold.

    Good news about the fry. Some find that if the hairgrass is in it's emersed form, then it'll die back hard. Some find it's best to cut it back hard to get the new submerged growth. This hasn't worked for me, but might work for you.
