I never changed my jewel sponges. Just squeeze them one each at a water change.
I moved to using DIY filter floss from a big floss mat used by pond people, it was cheaper that way
You don't mention what fertilisers you dose, please can you let us know what, how much and how often you dose.
Generally, it's ammonia either from fish poop or decaying plants that cause algae. The signs for algae could be a signal that your plants are not healthy.
Have a look through the...
I had a #1 and was sufficient in a vision 180 with the addition of an external filter.
That said, 2 #1's would of been good too, mainly because of the bow shaped front.
I'd suggest that you get one #1, see how it goes and then could decide if you need a second.
For placement, it's best to keep...
It's a shame sam that you can't offer a product test for the EQJ filter.
I would of thought that a good review from someone like yourself would increase sales volumes?
Maybe these type of "unknown" products can be tested under the UKAps name? That way, it'd give some weight to asking for the...
I did the review of the JBL e1500 that was posted above, it's a great filter but just about coped with filtering my heavily planted 180 litre tank. Even then sometimes I had to use powerheads.
Therefore, whilst it's a fab filter, I don't think it's suitable for you in your 320 tank - unless you...
I have a 13mm glass lily set which is the smallest fitting tubes.
But it's on a Fluval 105 filter that fits 16/22mm tubing.
Therefore, I got a section of each, and luckily the 12/16mm tubing (for the lily pipes) perfectly fits inside the 16/22mm tubing for the filter.
The join is so tight you...
I had a 1500 and it was great, I got rid as I got rid of my larger tank but would get one again without a second thought.
Superb bit of fit and it's good to see people are getting them.
My filter leaked once after I had a good clean of the inside of the filter.
Are you sure that all of the internal baskets are back in place correctly? Mine was a bit out so when I closed the filter it did, but just left enough room for it to leak.
I'm looking for a lily pipe that would go on a fitting of 16/22mm tubing.
I want the functionality of the lily pipe but a plastic one as I've got a background.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Thought I'd add that I'm wanting to move away from using my spray bar as I'm not sure that's best for me at the minute.
After looking around for sometime to get a good external that would fit into a Juwel Vision 180 cabinet I found the JBL Cristal Profi e1500.
When I received it I did a review at viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2592
In it you can see how it fitted into the stand and with a flow rate of 1500lph (rated) it...
I have two different arrangements in my two tanks.
In my largest (180ltrs), I have a spraybar at the top of the back pane of glass pointing forwards. I find this is a very efficient method of maximising the flow around my aquarium to deliver co2 and ferts, especially to the foreground plants...
Hi,
Could we create a filter sticky?
Say for example standard tank sizes 30cm, 60cm, 90cm & 120cm etc.
We've had a lot of people asking for lots of suggested filters.
I don't mind creating if someone could then create the sticky?
The idea would be that the first post could be a summary with...
You can fit a JBL Crista Profi e1500 in the Vision 180 stand as I've got it in mine.
Take a look at the review I wrote at viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2592&hilit=e1500
If you get that filter you won't be disappointed!
Its the best filter that will fit in the stand.
Fluval 105 has connection for 16/20mm, which I have then reduced using 12/16mm tubing to fit my 13mm lilly pipes on my nano.
The hose lock nuts do not fit around the connection with replacement tubing so you need to push the tubing on a long way down.
It's 16/20mm tubing for the filter but I've stepped down to 12/16mm for the main tubing.
Just keep an eye out for the prices as you can get it for about £50 when some shops advertise it for £20-£30 more.
I didn't get the hose lock nuts from the ebay seller so contacted Hagen customer support...
I have a leaver on the aquastop valve, push down for more flow.
If you look at the picture on the box...
Its the black handle above the semi circle valve, both are currently pressed down.
I have a Fluval 105 for my 14ltr nano tank. It's super dooper, could be a bit of overkil at full flow but I have it turned down.
The Eden 501 is also used by many of us although you need to have the filter at tank leve.
There seems to be mixed advice from people and instructions about how to order your filter media.
Currently, in my JBL e1500 I have it in the following order (in order of how the water passes through)
Pre Filter Sponge - Ceramic Rings - Ceramic Substrate - Sponges - Wool - Purigen
When I've...
Can I just silicone one 12/16mm hose inside a 16/20mm hose to reduce the pipe to fit my lilly pipes?
I was thinking of getting something like Eheim do, to do the job, but they seem rather expensive for the job they do.
Any suggestions & photos of what you've done would be welcome.
Thanks
Hi,
So I just got my Fluval 105, but the hose connectors on the aqua stop part doesn't have the screws with it.
I guess they're important?
Do I know where I can get them as spares?
Thanks
I always try and consider the internal diameter of the tube/pipe compared to the external diameter of the glassware.
I have a 12/16mm filter pipe/tube which will go on a 13mm external diameter glassware set. Should the internal diamter of the tube be the same size (or less!) as the external...
Just be careful when shopping at the minute. There are a few places I wouldn't trust even though they're rock bottom prices.
The rule of thumb is... "if it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason"
And I think there's the other one from Graeme/George/Dan "buy cheap, buy twice"
Mine cost me about £125 from AquaEssentials as a special order. I've just had a look and they seem to have gone up in price to £150. I did see them a few months back for less than £100. As they're not really imported into the UK much, I guess the price will reflect that from time to time.
I have a JBL Cristal Profie e1500 which gives a rated output of 1500 lph.
It's quiet and smaller than others with the same rated output.
Worth a look as they're less than £100.
Hi all,
What pipe size and glassware size should I get for a Fluval 104/5?
I like the look (and the price!) of these from TGM http://www.thegreenmachineaquatics.com/ ... tlet%20Set and wondering what size tubing I'd need?
Any suggestions?
The one that comes in a box is already in a bag, those in a tub you'll need a fine net as the beads are small.
Its the last thing the water hits before going back into the tank as it polishes the water.
Currently, my koralia is just below the surface on the left hand plane of glass but as far back as it'll go. It's just next to the neck of the filter's inlet strainer as I found that the koralia pulls more past it that way.
It's also pointed towards the middle point of the front glass (so at...
Using my Koralia, I find that there's a whirlpool created from the surface. It's about 3 inches from the surface now and it still happens. Any ideas how to stop this?
Boss,
Becareful where you buy it from as quote cheap prices but they might not deliver and pinch your cash.
Try and stick to using someone you can trust.
I have the nano one in my 180 from time to time.
It is noisey to start but once in the water you don't hear a thing.
The only problem I found was that certain times when I put it in, it caused a whirpool as it was too close to the surface.
They're much better looking than other powerheads and...
It might be worth having a look at the JBL Cristal Profi range, I have a e1500 for my 3ft tank and it's truly fab!
I wrote a review on here somewhere, take a look.
I would say my JBL Cristal Profi e1500 is rather quiet, John Starkey was amazed how quiet it was for the size of it.
I've never had another external so don't know how to compare it.
I've noticed that on the underside of my plants are producing oxygen bubbles, but the upper surface is not.
I'm wondering that in higher turnover tanks you might not see larger oxygen bubbles, as the oxygen is produced on the surface it'll be dissolved into the water quickly, due to the amount...
I've never heard an Eheim or any other filter to be honest so don't have any reference point.
I wouldn't say it's quiet but not loud either, it's not a huuummmm/buzzing noise more like a whirling noise.
Not sure how loud I'd say it is, but for me it's fab.
Dont worry, small steps at a time. That's what I've done.
If you're constraint on price, I think the TetraTecs are good value, as others have said the top class ones are Eheims but you pay for it.
I recently got a JBL CritaProfi and am very happy with it.
There's loads of different brands out...
I forgot to add the filter stats, thanks Steve
Not sure if the button is and easy start, it's more like a plunger you need to press to get the flow started.
All was ok this morning and it's not scilent, but a slight hum is fine with me.
It cost me about £125 IIRC
I took delivery of my JBL CristalProfi e1500 external filter today, so couldn't wait until I set it up.
It came from Aqua Essentials, but as this isn't really available in the UK, you need to order it specially from them.
Here's my view of the filter which has loads of photos to show you what...
Thanks, looks impressive and very large.
Maybe the Carlsberg tin is very apt...
"If Carlsberg made external filters..."
We'll have to wait for you to use it in the aquarium lol
Looks like I'm going to have to purchase this filter
- it'll fit in the center part of my stand with it being 24cm wide - I'll have to drill holes for the pipework
- its on the cheap range of things
I was going to get the JBL CristalProfi E1500, however that's £130 from AE. I spoke to...
Thanks for letting us know your views on this filter once it was up and running. I was looking to get one of these this week but have started to review other things now.
I'm not really price constraint (to a degree) so looking at Fluval FX5 or the Eheim 2080 which is discussed in.
Any...
My idea of getting an external filter are currently on hold due to work issues.
Although, I didn't realise that you can use a Rena Smartfilter as the intake pipe of an external filter so might do that for the heating bit.
Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
I think the Tetratec EX1200 will be one I buy. Just want to go home to make sure it'll fit in my standard Juwel Vision 180 cabinet.
At 26cm length, 25cm width 50cm height it might be a squeeze. Although thinking of it, my tank is 92cm...
Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
Thanks once again, really value people's input.
Unfortunatley, I wasn't able to shop last night as was busy in the pub watching Hull City get to the play off finals!! :D
I'm going to take some time to have a look at external filters...
Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
Do people think that the quoted flow output for the Eheim 2324 (500 l/hr( is sufficient for my 180ltr tank?
Just want to make sure I get the best option price wise.
Re: External Filter: Eheim 2324 vs JBL CristalProfi EL500
Thanks Dan. I was always on the side of the Eheim.
Looking at AE, they do a set of filter media for the 2324...

Ladies & Gentlemen...
About time I invested in an external filter and have two that I'm interested in...
JBL CristalProfi EL500
After this month's PFK good gear guide this looks good getting all the filter material.
Pros: It has all the filter media with it, nice pipework
Cons: No...
