    James Wong inspired Wabi Kusa

These little projects are a lot of fun. Tropical plants grow very happily in such an environment. Try getting some de-ionised water in a sprayer. Will get rid of hard water marks on the glass. T Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Having a bit of fun with emergant growing. Had a pot of Monte Carlo, set it to grow in a propagator. Seems to grow very well! Decided to use some to make a mini emergant scape. Had a few small but nice rocks to play with: Think it will need cling film initially over the top but...

    Seeds for Wabi-kusa?

Anyone know a reputable place to buy aquatic plant seeds? Seems to be a lot of dodgy looking, Health food sites selling Hygrophilia seed! I would like to try growing seeds on coco nut coir matting, to form Wabikusai. Pretty sure some similar process is used by ADA to make their WK Sent from...

Sorry for not seeing your reply Martin. All I used was some ADA soil, rain water and a sunny window sill. The UG did flower. All dying back a bit now as mid winter in the UK!

Not done any aquatic gardening for a few years but started to dabble a bit with a couple of Wabi Kusi. Trying to get UG to flower this time! Stayrogyne island is coming along slowly. Who knows a tank may even follow.....

Here's a couple of little bits I've been playing with. This one I have used ADA substrate with moss all the way around the outside secured with string. Seems to do a much better job of not letting mud etc leak out of the ball. This is a lump of moss I took from the side of a lake in Wales...

Hey guy`s no worries it`s not a hijac as I find this sort of thing so inspiring. I think I´ve got to have another go at the whole ball thing. Especially as I have lots of cuttings now. For my money I think just using ADA substrate wrapped in moss might result in least sediment leaking out. I...

Went for a walk on Sunday around one of the moorland lakes near my parent's house. Was supprised to find plants including Hydrocotle species, spearwort, a carpeting plant - like hair grass. Many of the niches our tropical plants occupy seem to have been filled in this cold upland lake. Good...

Thanks, I must admit I thought it would get much bigger, I'm dosing ferts? I guess the sun in the UK is not quite the same as in Brazil, although in summer we get a good 18 hours or so. I've no idea what species it is, as I got it from bargin bin in a big pet shop. Might try again with a really...

Couple of little up dates. I really like the amazon swords, would be cool if they flowered. My carnivorous garden is going well the VF is claiming victims and the Urtricularia species is flowering. Needless to say I want to have another go at the original WK but will try a different technique...

Great thread Neil, I must have another go at trying the "classic" WK now I have some more experience. I always find it difficult to stop the soil leaking out, probably need to use more clay rich soil......

No misting at all Neil. I just top up with tap water that has been allowed to stand to let the chlorine evaporate, my water is very soft with virtually no dissolved carbonates. The Riccia is a really good substrate and all the other plants are just growing in amongst it. T

 Yeah, I read about one guy who leaves dead fish amongst his VFT to attract flies. I'm sure the cats would love that, wife probably not so keen. With all the sun we've had things grow every day, I have some Utricularia bisquigmata wich has started flowering, hope the UG will do the same.

Hi Neil, there is no wattage on the light. It's OK for emergent plants but I think one would be a bit weak for a planted tank. Would be cool for a non-planted bio-tope maybe. I think mine must have been in a sale as I went back the other day and their going for £35 each which seems a bit steep.

Seems to be good weather for WK. I'm exited as I've ordered some more carnivorous plants from Triffids. The bowl keeps sprouting little surprises, stems keep popping up out of the riccia and UG is slowly spreading around one corner. The Amazon sword is looking healthy but I'm not sure what...

Couple of update shots. The UG has melted in some places but growing back, seems to not like getting too wet! It rots where water has covered it's leaves. The Hydrocotle has to cut back to stop it smothering the UG. My original WK has been totally dominated by hairgrass and will be replaced...

Thanks for the comments, guys! :D I find working on this small scale suits me as I always get new ideas and breaking down your tank every 2 weeks is a bit impractical. Yes, Neil the light is from John Lewis, I don't think it does any actual photosynthesis. I keep pestering the guys at TGM to...

Re: Wabi-kusa project Sorry about the delay to reply! The bowl just has a handful of ADA Malaya at the bottom. Retrospectively a deeper layer would have been better but I don't want to disturb it now. I think it creates a great environment for tropical plants. On a sunny day it's so warm and...
