    Aphids in dry start.

I had aphids in my emersed scape. Flooding is the only practical solution. Especially if there are fish around to eat the aphids. A flood for 24 hrs and then drain won’t affect a dry start (I.e plants won’t transition to submerged growth in 24 hours). You do need to get rid of them, they really...

Thanks Marcel, on your advice I’ve raised the level of the water in the pool. There is free water beyond the Petri dish of substrate. Definitely some daphnia in there from my rain butt. UG spreading slowly Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Java Fern 'Windelov' Emersed

Good work, does seem to need high humidity. I’ve got some “Narrow leaf” Rhizome buried in moss in my emersed set up. It keeps putting out leaves but they just crisp up :( Humidity in the mid 70 % range. Will probably try adding a lid. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks, Hendre. My friend who grows carnivorous plants says sundews and urtricularia are pretty much weeds in amongst the other pitchers plants, fly traps etc. One man’s weed is another man’s treasure! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Little update. The oasis works surprisingly well. Even moss right at the top is growing. I decided I didn’t like the high vase it was in so transferred the lot to a Petri dish. This now sits under the cloche. UG was starting to grow till I uprooted everything. I’m sure it will rally. Added...

    Journal Utricularia Graminifolia Tepui

I think it’s not a true aquatic species. It tolerated periodic submersion for me but seems to do best emergant. I’ve previously used old ADA Amazon successfully but would guess it prefers low nutrient environment. I use rain water with it. T Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes I’ve played with carnivores before. They seem to appreciate humidity. Will post up some pics on the journal when sundews arrive! Quick snap while running past: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Think it will be a question of how much water the Oasis can support in a vertical column. I can always cut it shorter. Pretty sure I will need a dish under the cloche, condensation will run down the glass.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I bought a pot of UG to use in my DOOA Wall scape but decided it wasn’t right there. I still think it’s an awesome little plant, especially if it can be induced to flower. I wanted to do something to go on the window sill where my propagator was (now ransacked to do other scape). I found an...

    Emersed Fontinalis antipyretica

I had some Willow Moss in my big tank but didn’t really like the submerged appearance. I pulled it out and put in my emersed “Bits Box”. It looked very black and dead for a while but has just started putting out new growth, looks really cool. Like little green fern leaves. Hope to use some in...

    Tank recommendations for Paludarium

    Tank recommendations for Paludarium

Hi there, I’m looking for a tank with a 30x30 cm foot print (would consider larger), that’s not a cube. Really I want something tall 35 - 45 cm tall would be ideal. Only found the Nano Cubes (35 cm tall) so far that fit the bill, I’m not a massive fan of the round corner. I would like...

Using moss as substrate for floating island

UG and moss go together very well, the UG I have growing on my mossy island looks pretty healthy and is spreading underwater. Riccia also seems to work well. The moss island project worked out quite well this all based on some kind of terrestrial moss.

Has anyone had any real sucess with emmersed growing?

Plant definitely grow well emersed but they seem to have varying preferences for humidity. HC grows very slowly (if at all) at normal room humidity, same goes for many others. Easy ones I've found are Hydrocotle, Amazon swords, hair grass, Riccia and Bacopa sp. Providing loads of light without...

    Erratic - Emersed Pico

Would have been good but boredom stopped it from getting finished! HC grows well emergent, doesn't need particularly humid conditions but needs lots of light without getting dried out! T

How fast does your HC grow emersed?

Slow in my experience ! It doesn't like being partially submerged, keep the water level well below the leaves. T

    Erratic - Emersed Pico

Well, this tank is now running on the rays of the sun, at least algae is not a concern! The glosso is growing all leggy under British winter sun and the HC is microscopically slow. A nice thing about this is you can pick it up and look at the underneath, the glosso has already formed an...

    My emersed setup

I find the whole CO2 in emersed a bit confusing aswell. In a tank you aim for 30 ppm CO2 and it's already aprox 325 ppm in the atmosphere, is it really neccasary to add more as long as the ventilation is adequate? The glosso I've got in a open cube is growing far quicker emersed than it ever did...

    Erratic - Emersed Pico

For anyone who's interested, after about 10 days the glosso is sending up loads of emergant leaves that are smaller and darker green than the underwater leaves. The HC is just at the surface but spreading under water. This seems to be a great way of propagating Glosso. Should have plenty for my...

    Erratic - Emersed Pico

Hi, this is what happened to my Pico after the comp. I had a few abortive attempts at Wabi-kusa but then decided to try a low maintainance emersed set up. I've put a level bed of ADA amazonia in the bottom, I filled it so about 5 mm of water covers the substrate. Same 20 w desk lamp as...

I also had good results with a plastic tub under my tank light with HC, seems to grow faster and with bigger leaves. It was going well until I went away for a weekend and it had dried to a crisp - doh! Are you guys using any artificial light or just a sunny window sill? T
