    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

LFS tend to use the hobby kits as well, so might be worth asking before you get them to do it, I see some are charing for it now as well. Good idea to phone the water company if you've got a genuine concern though Sam

    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

I doubt our hobby test kits are all that accurate, if the water quality report says lower than 50ppm, I'b believe that over my test kit (whatever the brand). Sam

You can download the water report for your area from your water company, they have to provide it by law. Sam

    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

I've had this happen, no apparent reason. Just one of those things. I doubt it'll be anything to do with the water param's. 80ppm NO3 isn't all that high really. I dare say mine is a hell of a lot higher! Sam

    Help with tank mates

Not really much you can do fish wise, anything you add will just increase the problem. Have you tried syphoning using airline hosing? Being smaller it doesn't have the smae sucking force of bigger piping and so you can be more accurate and get closer to the sand. Sam

    nerite snails

Nerites look like this They are much larger than any of the pest snails you get. They also dont breed in freshwater, so unless you've added them yourself I would have to say they aren't nerties. Have you added some plants recently? That tends to be the easiest route into a tank, as the...

    Copper Content In Tap Water?

I doubt its copper in the water to be honest, but I guess there is only one way of being 100% sure. If you use RO you will need to add back in all the various minerals, some how, but you shouldn't need to add an dechlor. Sam

Advice for cherry shrimp set-up - now with pic

Guessing those are the cherries I sent you? They are great little critters, always busy :) I love them. I feed mine a good helping of this each day. If there is any left the next day they haven't eaten I leave it and feed them the next day, but to be honest thats a rare thing really...

    Thinking of Cherries Again...

Cherries would be fine in the 4ft I'm sure. The barbs in the lido would concern me though, as I've see the odessa barbs in my tank making short work of cherries quite a few times. Sam

Does anybody here have experience with freshwater clams?

Cant say I ave any personal experience, but a friend of mine added some freshwater mussels to his can and they just buried themselves and also you can see is a tiny mount of their 'mouth'. Guess most bivalves would do a similar thing. Not exactly a 'showy' animal  Sam EDIT - not sure if...

    Now Can I Keep Shrimp?

If you've been getting the shrimp from, LFS they are probably all females. Cherries breed so well if they sold males as well, the shop would soon have lots their market! Females are also more colorful I guess. Sam

    Cherry shrimp

I have heard of people selectively breeding cherries so get some very very red ones, might be they call these 'brilliant'. Personally I doubt they are worth the money, any offspring are unlikely to be as red as the parents. If it were me I'd try and find from crystal reds and get those instead...

I'm Giving Up With Trying to Keep Shrimp

Sounds like something is wrong with the water, if its killing nerites in a few days (although they can be sensitive when first added). Swap to RO if you can, as James says, just to rule it out. FYI - I'm pretty sure they are sensitive to NH3/NO2 as I had a loach die in my 60lt and didn't...

    Where am I going wrong?

Haha nice one, the baby shrimp are extremely tiny when first hatched so might even get through the tights. Have you looked in the filter recently? I often find loads in my filters! Sam
  38. T

    Where am I going wrong?

First to say that if they are carrying eggs they are fertile so should be viable. What kind of filter do you have? That can often be a killer for babies. Sam

    Amano Escapees

Nan Ive had them jump from tanks they breed in, though if the water quality is an issue they will jump more often. Just one of the problems of open top tanks I guess. I find crispy shrimp all over the house, it amazes me how far they get sometimes!!! Sam

    Why don't my cherries breed?

Luke, I'm not after much, just cover postage :) I sex based on body shape. Females are noticeably rounder in the body than males. Here females on top, a male below. Even when not carrying eggs, the females are much rounder. Sam EDIT Female without eggs
  51. T

    Why don't my cherries breed?

I'd put money on your shrimp being all females. I found a breeder and got a few males and a few weeks later I had loads with eggs. If you want...

  58. T

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

Oh yeah, copper in the house Ed, but the water spends such I short period of time in those pipes I took it not to matter :) Lead I believe has been banned for years but they haven't yet replaced all the piping under the streets yet. I could be wrong. Sam
  59. T

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

Mains water doesn't go through copper piping as far as I am aware. Plastic these days or clay and even still lead in places. Copper would have been to expensive I would have thought for mains water. Sam
  60. T

Hot tap water, deadly to shrimp?

I use hot water straight from the tap on all my tanks and Ive got cherry shrimp coming out my ears, so its never been a problem for me. The house is 40years old though so the whole copper pipes oxidising thing could be right. Sam

    Shrimp horror stories

Livebearers and baby shrimps....shrimplets if you will.

Ive got cherries breeding in my nano, which doesn't have mollies but does have a fair flow rate. I would get cherry's over amano's purely because they are easy to breed and you can find that eventually you become self sustainable for shrimp in all your tanks! Amanos are great though. Sam

    How many shrimp?

I have 12 in my 20lt nano. Andrew is right in that they are only effective for algae control in large numbers. And that is often a lot more than you would think. Unless you have other tanks to spread them around, it does mean that once the algae is gone you have to feed them, but a bit of...

    Nerite snails

Ive got four in my nano which is open top and its never been a problem. I did find a few outside the tank when I first got them but popped them back in and they've not done it since. The white egg thing can be a real pain. I seem to have 7 males to the mo which is very lucky. If necessary...
  77. T

    Snails vs Shrimp

If the tank doesn't have any snail eating fish, I would always recommend nerite snails, for me they are by far the best algae eaters. I've got them in all my non-loach tanks and I barely have to clean the glass in them. 3 or 4 in a 60lt seems about right as a stocking guide. Sam
  78. T

    All hail the nerite snail

    All hail the nerite snail

Hi All, Just thought I would sing the praises of nerite snails and show you this pic taken of my nano. This happened overnight. I have four in the tank and it has taken them about a week to get all the rocks sparkling clean. The only algae I don't think they eat is BBA and similar types, but...

    amano v's cherry

I think the amano's are the best for algae eating, however cherry's come a close second and they are supposed to be ultra easy to breed. People often add 10-15 and a few weeks later then have 100's. Hope that helps Sam
  91. T

    accidental snails

Most snails will leave plants alone. If you want to get rid of them and you have the space, a dwarf chain loach would be ideal, although technically you are supposed to keep them in shoals. If adding a fish is out, they are best controlled by regulating what you feed the fish. Snails IMHO are...

    Snails Controversy

    Snails surface skating

I've had snails do this, seems they use it as a way of getting around quickly. Saves having to spend hours crawling across the substrate from one side of the tank to the other! Sam
  96. T

    Nerite snails and loaches

Oh yeh I know that, but nerites are always pitched as being 'snail proof' which they are not! As I said the two lived happily until I added the second one and the clowns got wise to it. I added some dwarf chain loaches to my work tank to control the snail population it was developing. Sam
  97. T

    Nerite snails and loaches

Just a word of warning, I had a Nerite snail in my main tank for around 5 months and it didn't get bothered by the clown loaches (max 4" big). Then I had a spare one so added it and it lay upside down on the the substrate, which must have told the clowns that there was food inside, as they ate...
