Can someone give me a hand with low tech lighting?

If you're using T8's then the best I ever used were the Arcadia freshwater tubes. http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/fish/tech ... ants/67395 Sam

It's been a while... back with a view to setting up a low-te

I guess the Aqua 40 is to small for cichlids, so put the cichlids int he rena and plant the aqua 40, then you can have both :) Sam

method to measure CO2 degas of tap water for WC in low tech

Fair enough Clive :) When you say order of magnitude, are you talking 0.1ppm to 1ppm or 1ppm to 10ppm? I would think (and I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong ;)) but from 0.1ppm to 1ppm surely isn't as 'bad' as going from 1ppm to 10ppm? Sam

method to measure CO2 degas of tap water for WC in low tech

If I had to chose I would go with water changes over a test kit as well, if you get the test kit and find NH3 then its water changes anyway so might as well just skip the testing part! water changes shouldn't do any harm. Glad it was useful :) out of interest, do you have your local water...

method to measure CO2 degas of tap water for WC in low tech

Would it not be worth checking the NH3 levels with a test kit? Save you all this hassle? Shrimp could be dieing for a number of reasons. Are you sure it'll induce BBA? I would be surprised if there is a massive difference in CO2 levels between a non-co2 tank and tap water. Perhaps do a...

'prepping' ADA aquasoil for no water changes

I would think it would work fine, Im sure the AS wont care whether its in a tank or bin! If you have a spare filter you could run that on the bin for a few weeks, and basically simulate cycling a tank. Having said that once the filter is cycled the NH3 levels would fall to zero but that...

You're not wrong there. There is a noticeable difference in the fish in my planted tanks compared to non-planted tanks. Sam

    My tank

Looks cool, great to see the progression. I know what you mean about knowing stuff, there is so much to learn at the beginning, I've wasted so many plants on scapes that didn't work! Keep up the good work :) Sam

    carpetting / foreground cover

Yeh low light carpets tend to be tricky and its the high light that keeps the plants growing low. Glosso tends to grow upwards under low light. The P.helferi might be worth a try though. Sam

    Just Checking

Im running 3x18w Arcadia freshwater's on my 90lt and its around the mid light, the plants pear for about the last half hour before the lights go off. So I would think a combined total of 72w over a 180 would be about right. Sam
