    Looking for zebra otos

Last place I saw them was Maidenhead Aquatics in Wheatley, Oxford. Might be worth a call to see if they can get them in? They are normally very helpful like that. Sam

    Temp, salt and oxygen (Urgent-ish)

That does sound like a lot of salt to me as well, check a couple of websites to be sure you've got the dosing right. The salt will pose more of a risk to the plants than the air stone, but plants can be replaced if needs be. Its a while since Ive kept dwarf rainbows but I always found them to...

    Vietnamese minnows

Ive never kept them but as they are in the same genus as white clouds, i doubt very much they will pose a threat to shrimp. They are also quite small and unlikely to be able to fit a shrimp in their month. Sam

    Fish catastrophe

Yeh that does sound odd, sorry to hear you lost some fish. Sam
  5. T

    Boraras Brigittae

Ive got 15 in my 30lt cube, but there are other fish in there too. You could easily get 20 in there, if my cube was a species tank, I'd probably have 20-25 as they look great in a shoal. I've found them to be very hardy, not lost a single one yet. And that includes having a glass intake which...

    corys

I've had corydoras trilineatus in a planted tank with no problems :) I dont find cory's tend to dig around very much, they just eat stuff off the surface of the substrate, rather than move it around. Sam

    Help- Whitespot outbreak

A UV would help loads as well, I've got a cheapo ebay one like this, cant fault it, worked wondered on my green water. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/800L-H-7W-FISH-AQ ... 1c0f9a8d4e Useful bit of kit to have in the cupboard. Sam

    Veggie Botia striata

Rightyho! I'll starve them for a bit and see what happens ;) Sam

    Veggie Botia striata

Hi All, I added three Botia striata to my work tank and they dont seem to have touched the snails, the reason I added them in the first place! They do however go nuts for the algae wafers I put in the tank for the shrimp? Just wondered if anyone else had vegetarian loaches?!?!?! Sam

    how many cardinal tetras

Humm if it were my tank I put in 60-70 if not a few more. I've had 45ish cherry barbs in my 250lt and it was by no means 'full' Sam

Little fish for my little tank

Definitely! Just wanted to let Luna know (encase she didn't already) that the two were the same, and anyone else reading this that that particular fish goes by two commonly used names and is often sold under both names, that was all  Sam

    Chocolate gourami

Right cheers for the info Ed :) I've had a bit of a rethink, was gonna just have choc's in the tank but the green neons currently in there look pretty good so may need a bit more TDS anyway. Hell the Choc are currently in a mid hardness tank and are doing great. Will see. My tap is from the...
  17. T

    Chocolate gourami

It wouldn't be TDS 0, perhaps 10-20, whatever is left after the RO membrane, but it wont go though the DI pod. I've read a few pages with people that use 100% RO. Think I need to do some more research. Sam
  18. T

    Chocolate gourami

Would pure RO (not using the DI resin) be good for Chocolate gourami? Cheers Sam
  19. T

    What tetra?

Ive got a few green neons, much smaller than cardinals and neons. Personally I've found them to be hardy and a pretty fish, with almost no red, just the green/blue iridescent stripe. Sam

New Goby for my tank* edit Prolific algae eater!

Re: New Goby for my tank Cool, those are pretty cool :) how big do they get? Sam
  23. T

    Fish Illness ID needed...

Looks like a curved spine or something. This can often take time to develop and start to affect the fishes ability to swim. It doesn't necessarily mean its a gonna though, I've had a tetra with a spine that's curved in two places for several years now! Sam
  24. T

Snail eater for a 60 Litre

Botia striata all the way, got 4 in my 60lt and they do a great job :) dont get to big either. Sam
  25. T

    Pseudomugil furcatus

I've kept these a few times, nice fish especially when the makes display to each other. Didn't have the best of luck with them, they just seemed to die one by one. Not a 'bread and butter' fish but I see them fairly regularly in larger shops. Sam
  26. T

    Whats the ultimate shoaling fish?

The Cyprichromis leptosoma 'Mpulungu' look awesome! Sam
  27. T

    Whats the ultimate shoaling fish?

In that case I'd recommend any of the boraras species, e.g. boraras maculatus. Lovely little fish, if a little tricky to get hold of sometimes. Not used to death like the ember tetra as well. Sam
  28. T

    Whats the ultimate shoaling fish?

Otos, by a long way. I've never seen a fish shoal as well. Second to that I would say from the fish I've kept are cherry barbs, shoal better than most but guess still not brilliantly. I also find shoaling behaviour is much more apparent in larger tanks, I very rarely see it in my 60cm. Sam
  29. T

    botia striata, aggressive or playful?

Don't know if its playful or aggression, but I would certainly want at least 4 loaches of each species that they are very companionable and much prefer the company of their own kind :) Sam
  30. T

    World's most expensive Otocinclus

Ive seen zebra ottos for £18 quid each!!!!!!   I will add that as far as I am aware they are a seasonal fish, when out of season the prices rocket. In season they are pretty cheap in my local MA. £7 for 5 last time I got some. Sam

  32. T

    What fish look good?

The reds you achieved are half the reason I got mine ;) Sam
  33. T

    What fish look good?

Can I add a huge plug for the cherry barb? Ok a bit boring/bog standard, but Ive got 40 in my 4ft and they shoal like no other fish Ive had now they are settled. That might be due to the size of the tank or other factors but they shoal better than the forktail rainbows and silver tip tetras...

    Stocking Advice

How about starting with 8-10 and see how it looks? Personally I like to have a few more than would probably be the norm as I like fish. The key thing in terms of stocking I think is that it is a shoal of the same species, number can change depending on personal taste :) Sam
  35. T

Feeding Otocinclus in a planted tank?

Oh right I see :) Sam EDIT - just as a tip if you happen to use AS again, it is worthwhile planting the tank from day one, the plants love the NH3 and is one of the reasons plants do so well in AS :) ;)
  36. T

Feeding Otocinclus in a planted tank?

I would be very worried if NO3 was zero. With the amount of NH3 AS leaches, there should be loads of NO3 in the tank. Either than plants are taking ALL of the NO3 out of the water (Which I would be surprised at) or the bacteria are not present yet to convert NO2 to NO3. Sam
  37. T

Feeding Otocinclus in a planted tank?

It would be worth testing the NH3 and NO2 levels before you add anything as ADA AS can leach a LOT of NH3 into the tank and although the filter has been running it can also take a while for the bacteria to catch up with things. Sam
  38. T

Feeding Otocinclus in a planted tank?

If the filter is mature, I'd chuck them in from day one. Cant do any harm :) Sam
  39. T

Feeding Otocinclus in a planted tank?

Even if you cant see it there will be some algae in a tank, which should be more than enough to keep ottos going. I redid my 4ft yesterday and discovered 5 ottos in there, which I had completely forgotten about, they must have been surviving on the tip bits they could find around the tank. If...

    rasbora brigittae

I suspect its just a shyness thing. Bigger fish is probably the reason. Adding more would probably help but I cant guarantee it. Sam
  41. T

    Sawba Resplendens (ascian Rummeynose)

I cant say i got them to spawn but when I kept a shoal a few years ago I was amazed by the colours. An often overlooked fish unfortuately. Sam

    Botia Striata and Nerite Snails

    Botia Striata and Nerite Snails

Sustainable fish - but what species, and for how much?

    Good point Ed! Sam
  46. T

Sustainable fish - but what species, and for how much?

That's good to hear, might help protect whats left of the rainforest as well. I can't help on the species that will be produced but I thought a high proportion of tropical freshwater fish were already captive bred, making them sustainable anyway? Sam
  47. T

    Fish ID

Is it fine to keep a single oto with no chums?

I think they prefer to be with others, but would say you conld have two in a 10lt :) Sam
  53. T

    Botia striata

Interesting, Ive just added 5 to my 4ft and they are always in one corner. Sounds like they will venture out once settled though which is cool :) I hope they clear up the snails, there are still loads in the tank, but I guess there were a lot in teh first place!!! Sam
  54. T

Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

Nice one Clark. I hear its not too difficult a fish to breed, and given that its getting a spanking in the wild due to over collection the more its bred in captivity the better. Sam

    gold neon tetra

I've been doing that for years! There are just so many cool fishes out there that I think you could forever be thinking, 'but what if I find something better next week'. If you like the gold neons, I say go for it :) The appeal of a single shoal is not, in my humble opinion, necessarily...

    Loaches

I think loaches are really night feeders. Sam
  59. T

    White spot?

Just to clear a few things up. Some plants wont do very well with salty water so be careful. Some fish get the odd spot that is white on them. Mine do. I wouldn't panic until you see several white spots on two or more fish. It could be nothing and you dont really want to medicate if there is...

    Loaches

B.striata are great and shouldn't get much bigger than 3-4" I reckon most shops say fish will get bigger than they actually do, firstly as in the wild they probably do get bigger and also to cover themselves. Which is fair enough I guess. Those loaches will make short work of your snails ;) Sam
  63. T

    50 of what tetra?

Na, mine are as peaceful as you like, no agro at all  I was warned about the silver tips, but after an experiment with a few in my work tank I decided to get them as they don't seem to do any damage. It seems to be just for show, and as my 4ft is a silver tip only tank, they only have...

    50 of what tetra?

Ive got 46 silver tip tetra's in my 4ft, look great, and remarkably colourful and detailed if you look close enough. Sam

    Mass Suicide.

Did you use any aerosoles in the room or in a room next door? I had a loads of fish commit suicide until I realised it was my deodorant that was getting into the water from using it in the same room. Those kind of things are hugely toxic to aquatic life and the fish are just trying to escape...

  68. T

arowana... euwww. Would anyone pay £58000 for this fish?

Isn't this similar the flowerhorn craze that happened years ago? Some are pretty but not my cup of tea. I can see lots of people getting these and not really understanding the long term implications, like with clown loaches but on a much bigger scale! Sam
  69. T

    best shoaling

Penguin tetras always seem to shoal nicely in the shop, although I guess that's not guarantee they'll do the same at home. Sam
  70. T

Fantastic videos of tetras in their natural habitats!

Quality, even better that the bloke in the neon vid is able to make a sustainable living out of it. More of that please! Sam

    Nano fish

Ditto! I found flake work well, just bash the hell out of it with a spoon or something for 10 mins so it is nice and small. Worked great when I had my Boraras species. Sam
  73. T

    Nano fish

The Chili Rasbora rasbora wont get to 3.5cm. 1.5 at the absolute most. Sam
  74. T

    Stocking a 60"x20"x24"

A single shoal of Densioni would look superb. I'd be tempted to forget the rainbows and just stick with them, but that's just me. Which rainbows were you thinking of? Re clown loaches, they say they get to 6-8" in the aquarium so your tank should be ideal, even once they get fully grown in...
  75. T

    Nano fish

Have you ever seen Boraras brigittae? Its a tiny fish and even in a 50lt 10 are going to get lost. I used to have 25 in my 25lt 24x8x8". If it were my 50lt I'd get a shoal of more like 20 or 30. They barely get to 1cm in length! Great little though, lovely colours. The green neno tetra is...

    2 Mysterious Deaths?

I have random deaths every now and then tend to put it down to life, somethings don't always have an easy explanation. Had 2 corys die close together, thought they all might just be getting old, but the other 2 are still going several months on. Sam
  77. T

    L190 Royal Plec

Cool, nice looking fish, healthy too by the looks of him :) Sam
  78. T

    Which shoaling fish?

    i) I would have a pair, you really need a much bigger tank for more than one pair. ii) B.maculatus is a lovely little fish, if you can prevent it from getting sucked into the filter. You could have 60-70 in tank that size. Discus would probably eat them though. iii) I wouldn't necessarily...

Platy - right course of action?

Perhaps you did, thats quite a change fro him to cope with, as well as the fungus. Taking him out however might well have saved the rest of your fish so he probably took one for the team. Sam
  81. T

    rainbow fish

Dwarf neon rainbow if memory serves. Nice fish, colourful too :) Sam
  82. T

    rainbow fish

Yeh sorry should have clarified that statement! You'd not get 60 red rainbows in!! Sam
  83. T

    rainbow fish

Raindows would be ideal, I love the yellow they give. In a 300lt you could have loads 60-70 if not more! Common Australian rainbows (the yellow ones) found in the shops include Gertrude that ed has, threadfin Iriatherina werneri and forktail Pseudomugil furcatus Sam
  84. T

    Suitable Pleco

Ive got a clown pleco Panaque maccus which I must have had for over four years now. I very rarely see him and I doubt he does much in the way of algae eating, but he's no bigger than 1.5" and shouldn't get any bigger. Nice looking pleco I guess, but nothing fancy. Sam
  85. T

    Its a long shot but...

Oh no, they had lots, just that the deal they were doing was 3 for £19. I would probably get 11 or so, see if I can haggle some money off. According to PFK they are from Peru. Sam
  86. T

    Its a long shot but...

I went into my local MA shop over lunch and they had some fish labeled glass red tail tetra, but no Latin name. A Google search didn't find much, but I think I have narrowed it down to this fish http://www.u2u.idv.tw/stone/photo/Tetra ... 20tail.jpg Anyone know anything about these? Jeremy...

The Green Machine - new fish in stock!

    Spice Rasbora

Never seen a Boraras species with a yellow strip. I always thought B. urophthalmoides looked like this, but I guess with this genus its never easy to tell, there a loads of them. Could be a captive bred type. Fish base has its common name as Least Rasbora, although I guess common names are...

    In praise of Otos!

My local MA shop has them at the moment for 6 for £5 but I've seen them selling at £4.50 each in the same shop, go figure! I do understand that they are nearly all wild caught and as such they are a seasonal fish, which would explain why they are a stupid price sometimes. Sam

    Micro fish

I have to agree with George, re the M.nana Ive got two and although they are dwarfed by my clown loaches they are stunning little fish, which have an iridescent green colour in the right light. I'm certainly thinking of them for when I redo my nano. Also think about the Australian rainbow...
