Good to know! I'm looking at getting my own place this year as an investment (parents own, I rent from them), rather than sharing the rent between 4 guys and putting money down the drain every month. Makes it a lot easier to fit hobbies in and I'm craving another tank after so long!

Is anyone here good at calculating the cost of electricity? I'm looking into starting a small tank at uni with gear I already have, but on such a small budget, I need to know how much it's gonna cost to run. Basically the system would have a light (24w for 8 hours), a solenoid-run CO2 unit...

Re: Goldfish tank I've gone bare-glass bottom for mine, and plants on wood. Easy to clean as you just lift the wood out and wipe/hoover the bottom

We use a regular scouring pad at work and it doesn't scratch the glass. Those Tesco pads, if you use the soft side you won't have any problems. I'd hesitate to use the rough scouring side on opti-white just as it's expensive! I use a microfibre algae pad on mine. I forget where I got it though.

You can get fittings that screw together either side of the hole (don't know the technical name!), that you can then slot pipework into. Have a look at some marine tanks that are drilled for sumps.

OK, thanks. 3 amp in a standard plug sounds easy enough. So why would the euro plug be so bulky? It wouldn't have a starter in there or anything like that would it?

Nope, Juwel bulbs are in series - if one goes, the other won't work.

Is it possible to run a Juwel tank with just one bulb? One of mine has just blown, and I only want one bulb really anyway. Is it possible to bypass the blown one so the other works?

Thanks Darrel, It's a proper chunky plug, which was why I was thinking it might be a converter or something. So if I was to wire both lights into one plug, how would this affect it? Would I just double the fuse size?

The packaging was the first recall, however they were re-packaged. Then they were stopped once the problem with the light was discovered. They were either refunding the whole tank or replacing the light. As yet they still haven't sent out the new lights. I heard no mention of the filter except...

The glass is very similar. Nicely built and nice smooth edges, just like my Mini M and 60P. The silicone is far better than standard tanks, but not quite as clean as my ADA tanks. It's nice piece of glass :wink:

Is there a way to work out what size powerhead I would need to make a little 10-12" high waterfall in my crestie viv? I'm thinking a 200lph (that could poss be turned down) would be the best bet just from guesswork, but has anyone got any opinions?

The bulbs in my River Reef were a standard fit to an Interpet T5 starter unit. Should be a standard size. I had the 18w one and I'm using it over my Mini M now.

If you don't want to keep the stock filter positions, you could remove them and silicone gromits over the holes (provided they would take the pressure), or something solid like small acrylic sheets. A Fluval 405 would be better if you wanted to stick with Fluval, but you might also want to...

Recently my Juwel twin T5 light bar hasn't been working properly. When you switch it on, it flicks on for less than a second, then off again. What would this be a problem with? The starter? Switch? Cheers, Tom

I used black Hammerite! I'd go for a pot rather than spray, as it goes on thicker. Will need a good few coats still though to get rid of all brush marks. If you don't like it or want to change it, it comes off with a razor blade. Tom

In the last half an hour the filter has started making a right racket!!

Hijac - The lid holders from the ADA tanks fit nicely - I have just swapped mine for the ones that came with the Mini M The plastic ones are now on my emersed setup rather than a tuppaware lid!

Another less important design flaw with this tank is the glass lid - there's no handle! It's a pain lifting it for feeding and maintenance, but I still really like these tanks. I can't see a problem with these filters - Mine doesn't seem to have any suction from that particular hole. My Betta...

I've just bought the 15l one to use as an unfiltered Betta tank :D Light seems pretty dim, but we'll see. That's probably not such a bad thing though.

I see these every day now I work at P@H, and they are definitely nice little tanks. I am very tempted! It could replace my 10 liter with black silcone for emersed growing....

Larger holes on the inlet will allow more water through at less velocity so as Dan says, things won't have their guts sucked out. The holes on the manufacturer inlet will probably be the optimum size for your filter. Again like Dan says, you don't want to put strain on your filter.

How big is the tank then? I'd still go for 10x turnover. My 8 liter Do!aqua cube has an Azoo Mignon 120lph HOB filter.

It's perfectly do-able :) Remember to get a pump that is maybe rated double for what you need, as you'll lose a lot of flow through pipes, height of tank, media etc. Make 100% sure all joins are watertight - test in a bucket!!!

Up to 1.5bps I couldn't see any mist in my tank. I can now I'm at around 2bps.

I'm fed up of having patches of glass that I can't get to due to hardscape being in the way of my 3/4" thick magnet cleaner. Even the tooth brush struggles. I've taken to using a (used but cleaned cleaned) camera sensor swab stick which looks like a mini plastic spade with microfibre cloth on...

I think I'm going to have to have a go at that glass scratch removal powder stuff. Need it in the next couple days as the Malawis are currently re-located to the kitchen, so can't build myself. I just though if there was a cheapy clearseal equivalent in that size I'd go for it. Cheers though. Tom

Hi all, I'm looking to replace my 4ft Malawi tank with something a little less scratched, and the dimensions I need are 48"L x 15"W x20"H. I can't seem to find anything this size - even a Clearseal, and that's my kinda budget! Anyone got any ideas where to buy one? I'd rather not get a 2nd...

I love my EX1200, but I would avoid the JBL personally, having installed one for a customer. Had a nightmare with that thing! Tetratec all the way! :)

I wouldn't think the heater would fit the ribbed piping very well, but I don't know. You might just need some jubilee clips. Tom

I've used kitchen cabinet hinges, which aren't concealed and have a bit of spring in them. They work just fine.

The back is also routed to fit the sides, bottom and top. I routed half way in when I did it, so 6mm. I used Plywood this time because last time I used MDF and it fell apart. Even after I sealed it, it still warped out of shape as water got in. I found the MDF easier to work with as it doesn't...

Update!!!! :D Inside painted with white gloss and outside with Dulux Midnight Jewels (note the door isn't done yet). It's getting its second coat today. Then I just need a trip to B&Q for some gatgets like a magnetic strip, and the door still needs straightening. Getting there... Tom

Yep the closest I found this evening was Midnight Jewels 3 from Dulux (I think thats what it was) so I had a litre mixed up for me. I also got a magnetic door catch too but couldnt find the feet to level it off perfectly. Will paint it tomorrow if the weathers any better. Tom

Finished sanding off today, hung the door and did the primer/undercoating layer. Off to the local DIY shop in a bit to get the top coat grey, levelling feet and a magnetic strip for the tweesers/scissors etc. The door is slightly lower on the right hand side, but that should be easily fixable...
