Forgot to say that the display tanks at Aquaforest were some of the best and cleanest I've seen :)

    ADA Gallery closed for refurb.

Thanks for the suggestions - I did Sumida Aquarium and Aquaforest in Shinjuku, very close to my hotel! Amano's aquariums in Sumida were the first thing you see when you go through the ticket gate. I wish I could upload photos now but I'm still in Thailand without a computer for another week...

Thanks guys, I think Sumida aquarium will be a good shout. Ill head there for the morning before my flight back to Bangkok :). Couple of nice ones there by the looks of it.

    ADA Gallery closed for refurb.

Hey guys - I'm currently in Thailand on a voluntary teaching trip, and have just managed to book some cheap tickets to Tokyo for a week. Have been planning my days there, and just noticed that the ADA Gallery was closed from May 19th for refurbishment. It doesn't say how long it'll be closed for...

Speaking of Gypsies, we last went to Alton Towers for a work doo on Easter Day, and the place was full of those with nice cars and houses on wheels. Apparently it's like a yearly social.

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

I can see if they've got one for you, but they were very low on stock when I went and didn't have any plans to order any more as they don't sell. Your best bet might be from a company based in Germany that has a UK shop. Can never remember the name, so that's not very helpful!!

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

Thanks Kris :D It looks a bit different now that I have added the extra rock to increase the space and height, and it needs some time to colour up. Running cost-wise, I don't have a clue about electricity. I'm now just running 22w of light, a HOB filter, heater and a Koralia. Feed-wise, I've...

    Marine Nano

Hi Neil, Glad you like my tank :) I'd be tempted to go for a single coral or a single species in a small nano like that. Look at some of the Euphyllias - really hardy, great colours and movement. You could also keep one of the smaller Clown Gobies or similar. It's worth bearing in mind when...

    pay day

Just my holiday in Snowdonia, but it would be rude not to call in... a couple of times... I did last year on the way and the way back, much to my Girlfriend's "delight" I'm sure she'll cope again!
  18. Tom

    pay day

I've been ill for a week so there won't be much of a payday this month :/ But I'm gonna get some Otos and maybe a shoaling fish for the 60P, then try and save the rest for Wales (+TGM) in July! Although I do need a couple of Koralias :/

    New little dude :)

Hahaa - I just did the usual tour of fish and reptile shops around Ipswich. Like the look of Western Hognose snakes after having a little play with one... wallet beware......

    New little dude :)

Not actually sure if their dinural or not. I think they're crepuscular (morning and evening). He hasn't really ventured out unless I take him out, but he does go for a drink occasionally
  22. Tom

    New little dude :)

I hope not! Coral Snakes are a similar colour if that's what you're thinking? Nah, these Mountain Kingsnakes are pretty easy to look after IMG_59072 by tommessenger:photo, on Flickr

    Good Fancy Goldfish Forums?

I've recently discovered Goldfish ( proper ones  ), and am struggling to find a decent forum for people who are more serious about the quality rather than just saying "awwww, cuuute" Anyone know anywhere? Have recently picked up some nice examples of red and white Ryukin, Red...

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

Yep, true. Cycling depends completely on the quality of your rock, how long it was out of water for transport etc etc. In the two marine tanks I've done recently, I've not detected a cycle and been able to stock lightly straight away. You usually get a certain amount of 'die-off' when setting...
  31. Tom

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

Yep you can. There are different types of rock you can use. The best ones are very porous with holes all over, rather than a solid slab of stone. They work like any filter in terms of nitrification, but also perform denitrification further in where there is no oxygen. Over time it builds up to...

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

If you clean the glass fairly regularly, the coralline won't be able to build up. I'm starting to get it growing on my Koralia and filter inlet now, but I quite like the look on equipment. I don't want any on my glass though. Marines can be as simple as you like. In a low stocked small tank...

At the time, yes. I now have an Eheim Liberty HOB and a Koralia. The HOB just has floss and RowaPhos in. You should :) They can potentially be done quite cheapy. Bit of an update here, didn't realise I hadn't put any pics up. Several more corals in now, along with a Coral Goby and an Angel...

Thanks, yeah I know what you mean about tanks sucking resources!! I still have my 60P sitting empty, several months on. Just like my Mini M was. Marine sucks so much more money than planted though, on every level!! I'm hoping to get a few more corals after Christmas though.

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

Nah, well I had the Interpet RiverReef I got from PFK for a little while, but I never really liked it and didn't have the money to do it properly at the time. Marine is no harder FW, it's just re-learning what goes with what, and who eats who. It's a bit like getting a new version of Pokemon...

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

That's my thought too, I like a clean cut finish to a marine scape. I'm not going to let algae/coralline grow on the glass either, I don't like that look. I want a nice clean glass cube :)
  42. Tom

    Tom's "Aquatics Live" Dennerle

Thanks :) I'm hopefully switching the heater to something a little more stealthy, and the powerheads to a pair of Koralis Nanos after Christmas, so it should look a little neater. Lighting too, I'm hoping to go with a PAR38 LED from marinereefleds, so just one unit and one plug. Then I'll think...

    Is this crab reef-safe?

Cheers Sanj, Here's the full shot. Imagine it without the macro algae and with some more interesting life forms in! I'll be honest, it looks far far better as a reef than as a planted tank :S
  45. Tom

    Is this crab reef-safe?

I set up my P@H cube as a nano reef on Thursday, and have found this hitchhiker in my rock. I saw him running around the first day, but then he disappeared until yesterday evening. Is he safe to leave in when I start stocking? Cheers, Tom

Comets fair enough a pond would be the best bet, but for the average fancy goldfish wont get half that size. Some might, course. my birthday present!

Be careful with nemmys - whatever the seller says, some can get very large and/or have a habit of sitting in awkward places. If it's just for the Clown's sake, Leather corals will do perfectly well for them but see how you go with the nemmys. I've had a couple of irritating stings from some too...

    my birthday present!

Nice present :D I'm seriously considering going back to marine on a small scale. Just leathers, mushrooms, Xenia etc... My first tip is to get as much flow around the rock as possible using powerheads, including behind and even under if possible - this will aid your filtration greatly. Other...

Anyone got advice for working in an LFS?

Somewhere that deals in Koi or watergardening would be busier over this period, but Viktor is right the aquarium and tropical side might slow over summer.
  60. Tom

Anyone got advice for working in an LFS?

Yeah we have to go through a whole sheet of questions before every sale. And I'm not even allowed to serve fish until I've completed quite thorough training (though some bits again could be improved - they don't advise fishless cycling, only waiting 3 days and add a couple of fish).

  63. Tom

Anyone got advice for working in an LFS?

Yep... don't! You'll be on minimum wage and will clean dozens if not hundreds of tanks every week - then start again. That, and selling guppies to people who couldn't care less about fish, then blame you when they die. Working for 2 local shops in this area completely killed my enthusiasm for it...
