    BIOSPHERE!

Thanks for the comments, Alexander - the wood covered itself in Cladophora, or rather the plant covered the wood! I was not involved. Took a fair few months. Temperature is currently 27 degrees (Australian summer) but the heater keeps it above 22. I tried to put up a new photo but forgot my...

    BIOSPHERE!

Yeah the white flowers are from Anubias nana, not sure what prompts them to flower but they do from time to time. Its actually very easy to clean, I just have a tiny magnet scrubber to get green spot algae off the glass, and I do a 3rd water change every 2 weeks, trim plants and that's about...

    Low tech tank pictures

Yes it is glass, just a big goldfish bowl essentially :D OK, so maybe it's lower tech - still no pressurised CO2, very low light and no NPK dosing - definitely not high! Perhaps we should introduce medium tech???

    Low tech tank pictures

I've just put this pic on my journal but I thought I'd put it here as well as it's certainly low tech - low light, inert substrate, excel and micronutrients... Tom, your tanks are amazing - I love the 'out-of-tank' plants and the dead leaves, good look

    BIOSPHERE!

Update - I really need a new light with a wider beam, my stem plants are in the dark! Riccia and HC are going well though. I melted all my Anubias leaves using excel to treat green spot algae (warning to others, don't use it neat!) but the roots are still alive and little shoots are coming out...

    BIOSPHERE!

Thanks, DIY filter works well, good to have the heater out of the tank but a pain in the a$$ to clean! Next time I'll put the tubes through the lid (or just buy a power filter & external heater!)

Excellent article - Will make for some good lunchtime reading at work!

    BIOSPHERE!

Can anyone recommend an improved fertilisation regime for me please? I think it's lacking in macros, but I could do with some guidance. The substrate is inert and I'm not up for replacing it any time soon - are root tabs a good idea? Can you get really small ones for nano tanks? I dose plenty...

    BIOSPHERE!

Anubias has now been algae free for a few weeks, few minutes with the toothbrush and excel applied to the leaves - now we have flowers! HC is also planted and growing very slowly, but growing - New light is in the post...

    BIOSPHERE!

Thanks for the Anubias advice. I scrubbed the leaves gently with a toothbrush, tedious process but they look much better now. When I dose excel I put it straight onto the leaves with a pipette, hopefully this will help. I will look into E.I. dosing but I'll have to do some research, I know its...

    450L Low Tech Aquarium

This tank is really amazing and unique! Love all the red plants, didn't know you could make a low tech tank look like that - very inspiring!

    BIOSPHERE!

Thanks for the comments! foxfish - It was only supposed to be a temporary setup while I saved up for CO2 and light, but I think I will keep it like this for the meantime - it's also very hard to find decent plants and equipment in Australia, still waiting for my HC! sanj - I'd love to 'keep...

Tank: Ellipsoid glass bowl, approx. 50L. Acrylic cover glass with rubber flow diffuser. If you have seen my other setups you’ll notice that low tech bowls are a recurring theme! This is the biggest and best one so far... I find the continuous flow of the surface and the complete, self-contained...

    Low tech lily bowl

Hi, Thanks for all the comments, I hope it inspired some people to set up their own! Sorry I neglected the thread for so long, I now live in Australia and the bowl is no longer set up :( I did put it on AQ briefly to see if anyone wanted to take it over, but ran out of time so I gave the...

    Low tech lily bowl

Show your mum! I reckon you could set up the whole thing from new for under £100 if you shop carefully, you get a good effect with mimimal maintenance. I also just left it for a week while I was away and it was fine when I came back! I like the overgrown look too, Im delaying the next pruning...

    Low tech lily bowl

Thanks for the comments- Can't remember exactly where the bowl came from, Ive had it for years. I think it was just a goldfish bowl from a garden centre or aquarium shop. The plants have grown so much in the last two weeks, its unbelievable how good the desk lamp is for growing (some) plants...

    Low tech lily bowl

Thanks for the comments! I have done a bit of pruning and rearranging, and poked a 'cave' in the moss which I think looks cool :D The moss is covering the filter quickly too... Here are a few recent pics with a black background (makes all the difference), should be resized too. Apologies...

    Low tech lily bowl

Im pretty sure its a clown plec- fully grown at <2inches. Tank volume is ~7 litres. I know its not a great idea to have fish in such a small tank, but I think this is more of a plec biotope (wood, moss, dark places) than my larger, 100% planted tanks. It seems pretty happy, I hear it making...

    Low tech lily bowl

Thought you might like to see this bedside 'pond'. It is my favourite tank due to extremely low maintenance/success ratio! Inhabitants are 6 crystal reds, 4 amanos and 1 small plec (not an intentional resident, rehomed). There are also small populations of snails and planktonic calanoid copepods...
