Ha! How i never thought of boiling water i'll never know. Genious :) I got so caught up in thinking "Oh god this BBA is bad i need overkill" i completely overlooked the simple things. Thanks, thats put me at ease being reminded of the simpple + safe option.
Might sound daft. Any particular technique to apply the bleach onto the wood? Sounds daft even typing that but with bleach i'm really quite terrified. Bleach gives me the heebijeebies :P I'm thinking bleach+water solution 1:10 ratio applied with either a pippete, small brush, or just pour it in...
I would say CO2 for the reason being mine grew small and shrivelled without any injected into the tank, then a week or two after i started dosing ferts and CO2 it doubled in size height and width, with the leaves being stunningly vibrant colour. They look almost leathery :)
I've only tried low tech set-ups so i can't speak from experience to well here but the most troublefree solution i would suggest is have a well informed neighbour/family member carry out your usual routine. Being advisable to have the routine written down near the tank simply too :)
Whenever i...
Reading up through this forum you'll find most of the information you need already archived from years of repition :) But to get you on your way quicker perhaps post the simple stuff first. Such as; tank dimensions, lighting specs, lighting period, CO2 y/n.
Many things have to be taken into...
Righto in the next month or two (finances permitting) I shall be crashing my 3ft tank as it is and starting afresh due to serious neglect and BBA issues over last 12 months. Now my life is freeing up a little bit again i have time to rededicate myself back to my breeding Dempseys and i shall be...
I get flashes of inspiration daily too. Quite often when i'm trudging around the warehouse at Tesco's where i work i'll be thinking to myself ideas of plants, rocks, fish. Often getting so excited i cant wait for the shift to end so i can get home and research plants and other such trivial...
Mexico, its neither North nor South in my eyes, but you have me there :) I was aiming for the Honduras set-up ideally :P Either way, i think i have my set-up. Sand, rocks (unknown) with DW (possibly manzanitan instead?) with Vallis and one or two Echi's. I think this will suffice for myself...
Yes i suppose you have a point about the plants, but for a South American biotope i hope to ahieve a decent hardscape for my Dempseys whilst having a couple of Echi's growing here and there. Perhaps two or three varieties :) Planted still, just minimal. I'm saving my plants for my 2ft iwagumi...
What rocks are native to South American river systems that are typically available in the UK? I don't mean to hijack the thread its just i too am interested in a South American biotope set-up for my Jack Dempsey cichlids. I have similar aspirations for my 3ft tank. Rocks with wood and minimal...
I knew my plant care at the moment is poor, but this fits the bill exactly. Thanks. If you don't mind i'm going to copy and paste what you put in that post and save it to my computer as a reference in future if i have further difficulties. It makes for a great little reminder. Thanks again.
Tom, are you referring to adding carbon into the filter? Or removal of?
Just to clarify, i always thought carbon was advisable to remove, as i've been led to believe.
Has anyone actually narrowed it down to what causes it? Other than reading someone says its an algae does anyone know what encourages it to form, and also what discourages it?
I've had this on and off over the last 12 months, and the only thing i've found to get rid of it was to add a power...
