    Or use the HDR option if your camera has this. This basically does what BigTom describes. Take two pictures and blend the pieces with the right exposure together. I always use it to take pictures from my tank with the lights above it.

    My Nikon D5100 has that as well, not sure about the 3100. But I would pick the DSLR as well. Don't worry about the macro lens yet. The standard kit has a quite good zoom, if you crop it on your computer, a nice 800x600 macro like foto remains. And you can always safe money for the real deal later;)

    HDR aquarium photo

    Nikon D5100 has built in HDR. Not that expensive, and I like it for photographing the aquarium as well as the cabinet.

    Nice photos! In the first picture it appears to be flowing away from you, in the second towards you. The longer I look, the more I get confused about the direction of flow.
