Plants that will do well in cold water.

I've yet to find a plant that doesn't handle 15 degrees. But they do grow slower IME

    The Edible Planted Tank

I got loads of that monthly. In fact, I think Ceratopteris with Limnophila will be my salad tonight!
  3. Yo-han

    The Edible Planted Tank

Bacopa caroliensis is edible and nice tasting (lemon flavour) and Limnophila aromatica is used a a herb on fish in Vietnam. I tried it and it doesn't taste bad either. Most Hydrocotyle are edible but not really tasteful. Eichhornia crassipes is also edible. Virtually tasteless but carotene rich;)

The secret to lush green Fissidens fontanus

Yes, but all other nutrients need to be proportional. So jacking up the amount of light alone will most likely only grow more algae;)
  5. Yo-han

    Help, what cryptocoryne?

Very hard to tell without a flower (spathe). Becketti, wendtii, legroi. All plausible. You will see difference between two clones, but there are a lot of geographical variants as well.
  6. Yo-han

    Plant ID Please. :)

The difference between those 2 is quite easy. Aromatica is way more aromatic. And second, Pogostemon stellatus has little purple knots between each leave and the stem. But I go with Mick;)
  7. Yo-han

    Moss(?) ID

Before you make a decision, keep in mind Riccia grows 10 times faster than the moss;)
  8. Yo-han

    Plant ID

You can easily trim it like a 'waterfall'. That way you can use it as a 'midground-all-the-way-to-the-back-plant';)

    Yoghurt and blended ferns

It think it depends on how fine you blend it. You can cut the rhizome of a fern in pieces, as long as a piece has at least one leave and a root it will grow. Any smaller, I don't know... Try it!
  10. Yo-han

    Plant I.D.

Definitely no Rotala as Mick already mentioned. But you returned them all? Didn't you kept one stem to find out?
  11. Yo-han

    Plant I.D.

It looks a lot like L. arcuata. But it looks bigger. There are many hybrids of Ludwigia species, so unless you make it flower, probably hard to tell. But perhaps when kep submersed it takes the shape of arcuata which is easily seperated from other Ludwigia species. Or it turns out to be an...
  12. Yo-han

    Plant I.D.

Hard to say the species, but most probably a Ludwigia. Any more info on where you found/bought it? Size would be nice to know.

    Vallisneria alternative

No the Vallisneria, haha. Cyperus was about 50-55cm.
  14. Yo-han

    Vallisneria alternative

    Over 6 feet here:happy:
  15. Yo-han

    Vallisneria alternative

Cyperus helferi will grow to 50+ when kept in low light IME. Other (not very similar alternatives) would be one of the big Eleocharis species, or perhaps Juncus repens or Cryptocoryne balansae. Or just give it a try with the liquid carbon. Don't dose it close and don't go overboard with the...
  16. Yo-han

The secret to lush green Fissidens fontanus

Yep, light and CO2. The parts in the shade are always a little more dark. More CO2 also seems to make it greener.
  17. Yo-han

    help! with glossotigma

Yes, try it for a month. I bet the glosso will hug the substrate! But again, be sure CO2, flow and all other nutrients are perfect or you'll be facing algae very fast.
  18. Yo-han

    help! with glossotigma

I have to disagree with Tom and Ian. I think high CO2 is necessary to keep glosso alive, to make it grow like it looks in Toms tank, it needs more light. I don't think this is a CO2 issue. I've a tank full of glosso. It is on a pH controller. I can keep CO2 the same, flow the same, but by...

    Afro Moss

Nice! Looks like a moss I once found between my Riccardia. Is this the same?: I found multiple names for: Blepharostoma trichophyllum, Heteroscyphus zollingeri, Notocyphus lutescens. With the second being most likely.
  20. Yo-han

    Plant I.D

Yes it is, there are many species so very hard to tell. Here are all Dutch Eleocharis species, I think they won't differ much from the ones in the UK: SoortenBank.nl : Zoeken

    defective leafes on Microsorum pteropus

Looks a lot like the leaves I've seen in an severely PO4 limited tank. Maybe your others plants have access to PO4 from the substrate, ferns need PO4 in the water. But poor CO2 might show op in the same way perhaps.
  22. Yo-han

    carpet options with corys

Tropicas E. hydropiper is indeed a good choice, but not the real hydropiper as mentioned before. The real hydropiper could be used as well. Staurogyne is no problem as mentioned. Tree others I used with my corydoras are glosso, lilaeopsis and Eleocharis 'mini'. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

    Plant ID

When I bought H. polysperma 'Rosanervig', half the pot contained the classic red with white veins. The other half was like yours, the veins where lighter than the regular polysperma I had next to it and more red. Looked like a hybrid or something.
  24. Yo-han

    Specific plants and liquid carbon

I think it all depends on the dose. Assuming standard dose, the Hygrophila and Ludwigia are no problem. The others, I don't know.
  25. Yo-han

Anubias nana var. Petite / Bonsai

Yes, what is usually sold as bonsai is only a little smaller than nana and has a little longer (eur shaped) leaves. Petite is really as small as a fingernail but more rounded.
  26. Yo-han

    Moss ID, confirmation please

Haha, just don't become a bryologist and you'll be fine;)
  27. Yo-han

    Moss ID, confirmation please

Mosses are almost impossible to ID, even for bryologists. So for aquarium purposes we use these fantasy names which are mostly derived from their growth habit (spikey, flame, christmas, weeping, etc.) That said, the first one looks like spikey/regular javamos. And the second indeed more...
  28. Yo-han

    Anyone know what this is?

Anubias heterophylla I think, or another Anubias. You can attach it to wood or stone indeed, but as long as the thick rhizome is above the gravel it is fine as well!

Best Plants for Veggie Filter / Sump

Epipremnum is what I used ones. Grows really fast!
  30. Yo-han

    Please ID this plant please

This is more likely than 'green'. The 'Tropica' always has this wave leave edges.
  31. Yo-han

    Please ID this plant please

The one I used at our lfs is way greener, but it might well be C. wendtii 'Green'. IDing Cryptocorynes is almost impossible without a flower. And conditions can make them grow smaller/larger or a different color.

    tiger lotus

Good question! I just placed the bulb inside without water or anything. It worked... Before it didn't do anything, placing it back in the water it started growing again.
  33. Yo-han

    tiger lotus

You can place the bulb in a cold spot (refridgerator) for a week or 2. I learned this trick from a friend and it really works. After placing it back, it will start growing again.

And that plant is? Java fern trident?

    Hemianthus micranthemoides doesn't like me

So what would be the minimum GH for most plants? I assume they need calcium and magnesium. And what would be the upper limit of KH and GH?

Quiz - what plant is this?

    Ceratopteris richardii??

    Hemianthus micranthemoides doesn't like me

It needs lots of CO2 and not too little light!
  38. Yo-han

Glossostigma growing up despite over 1.5 watts per liter?!

How about the light period? In my tank the glosso grew horizontal in the darkest corners as well, no problems. Before I left 2 weeks for a vacation I reduced the amount of light a little and reduced the photoperiod by half. CO2, flow, everything else stayed the same but when I came back, the...

    a low tech carpet

How about Staurogyne repens or even easier S. 'Porto Velho'. Tripartita is doing quite well in a large low tech as well. Maybe not really a carpet plant if you've a small tank.

    Utricularia Gibba

Haha, do I get my 10 points back?

    Ceratopteris thalictroides an annual plant?

I read this a lot, but for every plant that is supposed to be annual I know someone who have kept it for multiple years.
  42. Yo-han

    Lobelia Cardinalis viability.

It's used in Dutch setups quite often and can be kept submersed for multiple years without problems! Why wouldn't it? As long as you keep cutting and replanting the tops, how should this plant know it is submersed for a month or 2 years;) Maybe if you only trim it from the top the lower half...

    Anubias Sp. Bonsai / Petite

First of all the bonsai and petite are two different cultivates. I've both and the petite has leaves the size of a pinky nail and the bonsai more like the nail of my thumb. The petite also grows slower although they are in the same tank receiving about the same amount of light. No special care...
  44. Yo-han

Can anybody tell me what is wrong with this plant?

Doesn't look aquatic indeed. In that case it might be an oxygen deficiency. What species is it?
  45. Yo-han

    Super glue

I used it a lot in new setups. Never had any problems but I did do a few water changes during the first weeks before adding fish. I want to add moss in an existing (fully stocked) tank during a water change so I'm really interested in the opinions of others on this matter as well.

    The answer to redder plants?

No botanic expert but I was ones told the turning red in autumn has more to do with decreasing temperatures and the tree having a hard time pumping nitrogen towards the leaves.
  48. Yo-han

    The answer to redder plants?

But he has fast growth. With fast growth it is harder to get plants red unless you really nuke them with light till a point where they can't grow any faster and turn red to protect themselves. It is about the same but in your theory plants can never turn red in low light, but they do! So that...
  49. Yo-han

    The answer to redder plants?

IMO it's about the amount of light vs the growrate. When a plants grows slow and receives lots of light it makes more red pigment to protect itself from the amount of light. Reducing N, reduces the grow rate, when keeping the amount of light the same, plants go more red. With lots of CO2...

Hemianthus Callitrichoides: Suitability with Dwarf Cichlids

With enough light/CO2 it's substrate hugging. Mine gets max 0,5 cm. With less light it grows up.
  53. Yo-han

Hemianthus Callitrichoides: Suitability with Dwarf Cichlids

Can be done but perhaps glosso is a better choice. Not even a problem with cories.
  54. Yo-han

    Germination due to reduce light

Yes like BigTom said, it's a reaction on an environment change. Mostly when it doesn't like it, so it produces new plants and detaches the old leaves so they can flow on to a better world!

    what bacopa is this ?

I see no picture, only the link...
  56. Yo-han

    Utricularia Gibba

Oke, I exaggerated a little but this is because I know two people which find this in their tanks all the time. I think in real life it is more comparable to moss. You'll find this between all plants too. I never kept it myself but I know at least one of the two tanks uses EI, so it's at least...

    ID This for me please

Normally a quite easy plant. Can be grown as a floater or the way you've it right now. If the others are growing I think you should add a little patience;)
  58. Yo-han

    Plant ID please.

    Persicaria? Or Potamogeton perhaps?
  59. Yo-han

    Utricularia Gibba

Its a real weed! No requirements at all. If you can grow anything, this grows. And after placing it in your tank, you'll never get rid of it... You're warned!;)
  60. Yo-han

    Which plant is this?

Love the fishing net;) But no IDea on the plant...

Plant Id? Any One Got A Clue

Hygrophila for sure! But I would guess stricta over regular corymbosa which has more narrow leaves.

    Couple of plant id's

I would say Wendtii green as well, but unfortunate you are never sure except when you flower it. Second is a Hygrophila most certainly, hard to tell which one, looks like angustifolia in poor condition indeed. If it comes from a regular lfs, it probably is...

    Moss what's the secret

I assume your other plants are growing fine. I guess there is no real secret but the big difference with other plants is that they can't use the substrate as resource for their ferts. Using EI, moss should be easier than most other plants. Using a rich substrate and no water column dosing...

    riccia carpet , am i mad ?

A sinking version? Nobody told me!
  66. Yo-han

    Plant ID please.

If it grows runners, than I'm quite sure it is a Helanthium. If it is latifolius, than it grows between 6 - 12 inch depending on conditions. Here I used it in two of my scapes: right from the middle: the big one on the left:
