A very common problem! JBL over Tetra anytime!

    too much flow ?

Isn't it just that there is too little light in the corner where the plants are doing less well? Alternathera is not a low light plant...

    too much flow ?

Once it roots, it will be fine, but rooting will be the hard part!

    too much flow ?

I think the biggest problem with too much flow would be that plants won't stay in the bottom. I've 1000lph internal filter in less than 50L water as well (Vietnamese biotope) and no problem with Vallisneria, java ferns and Cryptocorynes. But no way I could maintain an Utricularia carpet:P

    Sump or canister?

Well, unlike James O, I don't believe in the recommomdations stated on the box and unless I only had 5 tetra's in an unplanted tank, I don't think I would use that filter for a 600L tank. Besides the fact whether more filter media gives better results or not (I do believe it does), more flow...

    Aquarium safe lubricant

Like Sacha said, regular Vaseline is probably the best cheap stuff there is. Technically not an oil at room temperature but perhaps too oilly for you. How about silicon? Or get the stuff from Eheim, I don't know what's in it...

Recommended flow rates ADA vs other filters

Powered by a highest quality Iwaki magnet drive pump, stable water flow is ensured even as the canister builds up debris over time and in-between filter cleaning. Super Jet Filter ES-2400 (for 180cm tank) with glass pipe set [105-1012] - $1,379.99 : Aqua Forest Aquarium, ADA USA, Aqua Design...

Recommended flow rates ADA vs other filters

I believe I found the info on the iwaki site.

Recommended flow rates ADA vs other filters

It is, it uses an Iwaki pump, which keeps a steady rpm by adjusting its power as I understood.

Recommended flow rates ADA vs other filters

Another big difference is that ADA filters keep there flow rate even when the filter gets dirty. The pump just starts working harder, so they keep that steady 6L/min. Were an Eheim pumps slower every day and when you clean it, you are happy to have 6L/min left. And the way ADA sets up their...

    Stainless Lilly Pipes

My custom made: 20 euro for three pipes! Because he couldn't do the bend he needed to welt multiple pieces together, but compared to the price I say no biggie!

    UV questions

Depends on the reason... It is very good to kill green water. But for most other things a water change does the same. It is nice to have it on hand but if you've a tight budget, you better spent it on something else. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

    Re-using old filter media?

This gets away from the OP, but why do you change it as it will cause bacteria blooms every time. There is no need to clean it for at least years. A good rinse is all it needs! Only when it hasn't been used (read: bacteria died) I would clean it really well (boiling, H2O2 etc.)

    Re-using old filter media?

Algae will come to your tank anyway. The trick is to keep it dormant. So you're ok to use the old media, just give it a good clean and its like new!

Recommend a filter for 30litre low tech

If you are on a budget. I own a Wave filpo corner filter. It comes with ceramic rings in it and does do an excellent job. Only remove the carbon cartridge, this one is too fine and blocks the flow within a week, even in a tank without fish.

    Intake pre-filter for Fluval 406?

Just use a square sponge and cut a hole in it and put it over the intake.

    Lubricate filter o-ring: WD40?

Or get it from a anglershop, they sell silicon for fly fishing.

    Filter bacteria

That would be the best option! Another one that some people I know used is squeeze the water out but leave them moist and put them in a bag filled with air. After placing them back in a filter in a month (fish only so no plants helping) they never had any nitrite peak whatsoever. Done a few...

    Dennerle Eckfilter nano filter modification

Very different opinions about this. A heavily planted tank has 3 filters, the filter itself, the substrate and your plants. Facts is, you can get away with just a circulation pump and no filter. Your substrate and your plants do one heck of a job for filtering. Personally I prefer a good...

    Dennerle Eckfilter nano filter modification

Maybe removing the whole inner module and filling it with ceramics might be an option. Perhaps add some floss on top if you like (not sure whether this is possible without getting into the pump, so check first!)

    Filter 10x turnover rate

I'm having a Fluval U4 (1000L/u) in the same size tank. With the jet-stream type outlet, flow is too much for plants to stay rooted. With the built in spraybar type outlet the flow is much more gentle and plants could keep in the substrate. So it mostly depends on the outlet. Use a very large...
