    Too Much Water Changes??

I've ran a tank with too much light to make the plants 'pop' for a photo for two weeks. I did a 80-90% water change daily before lights went on and everything did perfect. The only remark I need to make is that for your fauna the new water needs to be as similar to the old as possible...

    ph and purigen

Yes and no! It only removes stuff (buffers, acids etc.) from the water. pH lowering substrates have two mechanisms of action. One: binding buffers (carbonates). This process isn't effected by purigen so the water gets softer and the pH gets down a little as well. Effect two: the substrate...

Yep, it takes away the tannins from the water. Not a recommended combination...

Whats the importance of KH ?

Although you say you are aware and tell us you aren't at the same time:p I assume the last is correct. It is important as a buffer for CO2. Some plants need it to be low (<4) but these only include specialized plants like Toninas, Eriocaulons. You don't want it to be zero though. That way your...

Or not out of date, but you simple inserted more organics in your tank;)

    surface film

A lower temp will make your plants metabolism slower and thus producing less organic waste;)

    surface film

Both (BBA and surface scum) have something to do with organics IME. Perhaps when you forget to clean your filter, your heterotrophic bacteria population grows better and breaks down more of the organics that cause BBA and surface scum. Clive would probably relate both to CO2 but except the fact...

    surface film

Again, a skimmer like Eheims or ADA vuppa, or a DIY from a soda bottle, they all work like a charm. BUT, it all masks the true cause. Like when someone is banging on your head with a hammer, you just take a shot of morphine to reduce the pain! Perhaps a Twinstar to compliment it? First ask...

    surface film

I think your filter isn't working properly! Perhaps with all the CO2, you pH is too low for bacteria to break down those lipids. An air pump works really well for 3 reasons: 1. Extra surface movement, so the lipids get into the water and into the filter. 2. Extra oxygen, so bacteria can work...

    My new TDS pen

This calculator uses 640 as a conversion factor. Acceptable I guess, but than again, we don't even know all the dissolved organics that are in our tanks so hard to tell. If 640-700 is a good conversion factor. This means a standard TDS meter is up to 40% off!

    My new TDS pen

Converting conductivity to TDS is basically impossible. It really depends on the type of dissolved solids to no how much electricity they conduct. Sodium chloride has another conversion (470-500) than potassium chloride (500-570) and a totally different conductivity than a large organic...

Which parameters do fish care about?

And which parameters do fish care for to be stable? When dosing EI, and doing a water change TDS drops quite a lot. Do fish notice this? And do fish care/notice it when the same drop in TDS is not from inorganic salts but from a lower KH/GH? Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

    tds help

No Darrel but I think I can answer this one. I think they are not too bad. Just don't use 5 mL but use 20mL. This way every drop is 0.25 degree instead of one. Now you're close enough to the real deal!

    tds help

It would be possible to convert TDS to KH or GH but not a mixture of both unless you know how much of each is in it. I suggest add a certain amount, test for TDS and test KH and GH. It doesn't matter if it is a little higher or lower. But than again, you can also just remember the amount you...

Which parameters do fish care about?

Thanks Darrel and Clive, this is all makes sense! The reason I ask is that the lfs I work provides a week warranty on fishes. But in order to receive new fish we want to test the water to see whether that is a cause of death. Off course, NO2 needs to be zero, otherwise no new fish. But what...

Which parameters do fish care about?

And which parameters do fish care for to be stable? By doing water changes in an EI tank you reduce TDS almost by half in a few minutes, no problems... I remember clive once wrote that you can just add EI for a week at once if you like. So raising TDS a few 100 in a few seconds is fine as well...

Which parameters do fish care about?

Ok, lets think of it from a different view. Lets say someone bought fish from my lfs (lets say SA, soft water fish), he comes back, they are all dead. Lets assume he treated them like he should. Besides the obvious NO2, what parameters would you test? We always test pH and TDS. I know the tap...

    How do I reduce TDS?

A clean tank is never a bad thing!;) All decaying matter uses oxygen, leaving less oxygen for your fauna. All decaying matter produces organics which are diluted during a water change. I think best advice for breeding CRS is keeping the water clean and organics low. If you do, TDS becomes less...

    How do I reduce TDS?

Everything you add to the water increases TDS. Think fertilizer and food (and thus faeces) as the main TDS increasers. Every dissolved solid as the name suggests:P

Which parameters do fish care about?

In (old) books you always read about the importance of pH for your fish. Also the hardness seems to be important and alkalinity, KH, GH and TH are frequently mentioned. Same thing for TDS. I want to know what fish really notice and how. For example, will fish notice (and do they care) the...

Fish health in relation to no water changes in low tech tanks.

Levamisole hydrochloride, shrimp and water clarity

Yes it is!;) Most fish can handle over 200 mg/L, but loaches and shrimp are more sensitive. 3x 2 mg/L 14 days apart got rid of my camallanus (unfortunately already lost all my dwarf cichlids and some other fish before I knew what it was). There is a very good article on loaches.com
  29. Yo-han

Levamisole hydrochloride, shrimp and water clarity

What concentration did you use in your tank? 2 mg/L is all it needs for camallanus. It is not more effective in higher dosages, but will become increasingly toxic for invertebrates (and all other animals with loaches like kuhlii's being the first to respond. I used it in my tank against...
