Have a good time at Uni but you don't have to have fish to have a scape - what can they say if they look in and only see plants ?

    java plants customer services

I've had some HZ from them and like yourself, it wasn't in the best condition. One thing for that plant though it can take a real beating and still come back very healthy and lush once it's planted

Plants pearling on WC day only

We've had a few experiments between us and one that stuck out for me was the effect of having plants above the water line for even a few minutes. Most of us will have some of the plants emersed for a substantial time at water change time which gives the plants the opportunity to 'gulp' in a...

I do the same, have a cover made from 2mm perspex cut to size for the equipment. Also stops the parrot going for a bath !!

    Are you an Iwagumi fan?

Have to say, I've always liked them but as long as the tank looks good, Idon't mind whether I'm looking at Iwagumi, Jungle, Dutch or whatever. Incidentally, liked the pic you posted of your glassware George, nice little demo of a vortex and not a straight through flow as suggested in another...

BE CAREFUL WHEN BUYING FROM THESE SHOPS

Re: BECAREFUL WHEN BUYING FROM THESE SHOPS Indeed Ed, being backroom on a couple of sites - we constantly bring threads underground to discuss. It does seem a lot of sites to be slinging mud at, especially when people are reporting no problems within the last week for orders and deliveries.

Turns out plants don't do well at high temps. Tank wipeout.

Terrible news to hear, as said above though keep your chin up. Post what you're looking for plant wise though and I'm sure we'll all help where we can even if it is just a few cuttings here and there surely we can get you enough. Al

    PFK glassware blog

I think I'm probably with most here - in that I like to see the glassware in my tank, especially one with no stem plants. However, I have had a problem with a glass inlet recently in that it was not allowing enough water to the filter which being an Eheim was managing to grab plenty of gas and...

    hmm what to do ???

Sorry to hear of the woes, must admit I'm surprised at Friday delivery. Being in the North of Scotland, I've had to get a few things delivered and the always send out Mon or Tue at the latest so that a delivery if delayed can still come through the next day. It took 3 days for some shrimp I...

A crazy question from a crazy person

Same here My mates / family can't understand why I'm never happy with a tank - my wife commented today that she noticed the Heteranthera Zosterifolia has left my tank again  (and that was it's last chance)

    Redmoor wood - Help

It's a fungus growing after it is introduced back to the water, you can either keep cleaning it until it stops or quicker is to remove it and then boil it if you can. If it is too big to boil, keep soaking it in water as hot as you can get it. It will eventually stop.

    Small planted tank?

I'd only have one concern - you say you're after a fry/quarantine tank ? In this instance I'd be looking at very low tech as Q fish and fry tend to want less light, highly aerated water (no CO2) and in general nothing to stress them out further than they may already be. My fry tanks run on...

filling tank - full on from the off?

I've never done it this way and without seeing what growth you already have I wouldn't know. May help if you add a pic of the set-up so far so those who have done it can see what plant growth you've got.

    buying from java-plants

I've ordered from Java as well and all plants were fine but they were not as well established as those I got from the likes of Aqua Essentials so price wise it may be that they end up being comparable for actual plant mass.

    Dragon fly larvae

As said get 'em out, I found 3 after setting up a tank before - suspect the were imported on the plants & they started eating fry. Sprightly movers too - but once caught, they became food for my cichlids.

No motivation to set up new scape with co2 and aquasoil!!!

Firstly .. best of luck with the health. As said above, it looks like we all go through it at some stage and as said in a previous post a good rip out can really re-invigorate the taste for it. I've just done one of mine, had let it go and then it became a heartache so with a vicious circle I...

    Lesson Learnt

    - AGAIN !! Having done it once in the past, I forgot the lesson learnt and have done it again. After a couple of plants went a bit haywire, I decided to revamp a little and put something different in. So I trimmed the plants I want to keep & removed all the glosso & H Zosterefolia from the...

open topped tanks - advice needed please

I have a sheet of perspex (cut to size with gaps for pipes & equipment) which goes over the tank in the dining room to prevent my parrot getting into the tank, however, I don't like to keep it on as I feel it may have an effect on the light getting through after scratches appear & dust, etc...

open topped tanks - advice needed please

I have open top tanks in 2 rooms, my wife used to use spray air fresheners in the dining room (where one is situated) and we had no problems. However to err on the safe side these have been removed and 'solid' air fresheners are now used.

    Your Fishkeeping History

First tank was tail end of 2004, so been "into fish" for almost 4 years. 1st tank was a Fluval 120 housing a variety of community fish, which is now being converted to a planted tank. Shortly afterwards came a fluval 180 which became my first scaped effort after housing Rainbows (now has CPDs)...

Surface Scum - Keeps Coming Back

Same for me, it's on a timer for every night. Personal preference, but I prefer to ensure that the water remains fully oxygenated for the fish and drives off the excess CO2 when the lights are off.

Surface Scum - Keeps Coming Back

I've had this in the past as well, I've introduced an air pump & coarse air stone which comes on 2 hours after lights off for a few hours and have had no problems since. My CO2 is off at this time via a solenoid and comes on again an hour before lights on.
