Hi all
Being working away for a long time and my 240L tank was in need of some TLC. I've restarted the 50% water change every 2 weeks and clobbered or removed a lot of plants as it was looking very overgrown with some black and green spot algae. CO2 is back on at 1BPM and a reduced photo period...
Thinking of a complete rescape on my 200l tank which has a good depth of Amazonia 5" at the back to 3" front perhaps too much in retrospect. Been set up about three years.
Want to try and avoid a complete strip down, rescape and replant and convert back from low Tec to injecting CO2, weekly...
Call me old fashioned but I've gone back to inline diffusion using a Aqua medic Co2 reactor packed with Ehiem ceramic rings at 3bpm. Easier to set up and control, provides extra bio filtration, uses less gas, stable and no mist in the tank. Against having to run two in tank diffusors (200L)...
I predict the end of quality plants from the mainstream shops even those with a half reasonable rep for live plants if all they can source is these blister pack plants. The packaging will have to be paid for at the price of reduced numbers stems etc and a higher retail price for poor quality...
I'd agree they are smather than your average shrimp! Just watching them outsmart the fish when there is food to be had makes me laugh there not stupid creatures.
Can't say I like this concept of selling plants for a few reasons;
1) LFS will loose trade to the big generic outlets with greater buying power so in the end plant variaties will be reduced to what sells as they have no real interest or passion for fish/plants or anything else they sell just...
They seem to jump/climb out at various times between water changes. On thing for sure is that during a water change they seek out and revel in the flow/bubbles and go a bit mad until the O2 reduces down to normal levels. After all they are a type of river shrimp right? There are filter in/outlets...
I'm a low tec on this front after loosing all my previous shrimp to liquid CO2 as an addtion to CO2, nasty stuff. Now just inject about 2 BPM 2 hours before lights on and stop 1 hour before off. My drop checker is a mid green. But yes its possible something in the water might be irritating them...
Thanks guys.
They have loads of hiding places and the water quality is good as I change 60% every 2 weeks and don't go mad with ferts. Circulation is rapid from a Ehiem 3 Thermo plus a internal circulation pump.
I'm going to try some mist netting attached to a internal frame.
Hi all
Stocked about 25 Amarno shrimp into my 200l open topped tank to keep hair algae at bay (brilliant result). Anyway my little helpers keep jumping out overnight for me to find their dryed up bodies. I've lost about 7-8 now which is a shame:(.
I have a Arcadia 4 tube luminair over the...
Following a wipe out of my Amano shrimp a few months ago due to liquid Co2 overdose (never again) I'm about to restock my 200L tank which is well planted and running bottle Co2, liqiud ferts 4mls/day macro and 2mls/day micro good flow from Ehiem 2042 and power head.
How many would you suggest...
Suprised how many they grow "dry" no suprise they is no algae on them!
Might explain why it takes these plants time to adapt submerged and the changes in leaf shape we see which is sometimes so very different from what you get in the box. Makes me think there very few truly aquatic plants...
Thought it would be good to do another update.
Well I stuck to the regiem above and my fish, plants and I are very happy. All the plants are growing very well with zero BBA just a little spot on the glass. Current parameters are 24c, spray bar no circulation pump, Co2 2 BPM fed into a CO2...
Hi all
Well I thought I'd update this. Good and bad to report. Put into practice the advice suggested and paid the price by increasing the liquid CO2 with a complete wipe out of all my shrimp, a massive series of water changes failed to save them and the fish had a free early Xmas dinner.
As...
Hi Paulo
Thanks for sharing your battle notes with the BBA seems you have tried most things. Its a very persistanrt problem which Ive had before twards the end of a set ups life which for me is about every 3-4 years when a build up of organics in the substrate is inevitable. This was with non...
Hi Guys
Thanks for the quick response and advice much appreciatted. Take the point about carrying on the fight I'll try the following and report back on the results. Just one thing what are SAE's? Siamese Algae eaters?
My clean up crew are about 10 x Ottos and about 10 x Amanos. Right plan...
Hi all
Struggling with BBA its keeps coming back no matter how much I remove infected leaves must have removed a good two thirds of the plant mass now.
Set up is EI (ferts 25mls and liquid Co2 7mls by daily dosing pump) based 220L tank running 4 T5 luminaire (2 on for full 6 hours and plus 2...
Hi
I need to contact Ehiem directly and tried the "info e mail" on their web site and got nil response just wondered if anyone has a direct e mail address?
Thanks
Fair point the filter is now with John Allen to look at so I'm waiting for feed back from them after which I will drop Ehiem head office an e mail as you suggest as if was me I'd want it back to undertake some tests to see what the problem is as it seems quite a few people have had issues with...
Thanks for the advice appreciatted. I take your point with regard to the altums they sometimes get a bit peckish and snack on a shrimp or two. I generally do 50% a week water change but think I will split it along with the feeding and reduce the ferts and light as suggested. I have an old power...
Thanks could run second air stone inside cannister, head is away for repair. Too much media to place in tank but I suppose I could put some in to act as a starter colony later. Live in Wakefield.
Ehiem P3 Termo not working (again) at present.
Set up EI dosing plus liquid cardon 210L tank plus CO2 3bpm Ehiem skimmer, in tank circulation pump and x4 T5s set for 7 hours full blast for 3 hours.
Heavy planting and about 20 tertras and 6 Altums and lots of shrimp.
Finally will the filter...
Same here drain, add declorinator, leave filter running full on to disperse it though the remaining volume and fill direct from cold 50% water change. Drops temp up to 5-6 degrees but the fish don't seem to mind in fact the ottos and shrimp seem to love it.
Hetchell Crags near Thoner/|Scarcroft the stream is spring fed from along the crag which I've had many a thirsty drink out of! The surrounding banks are very boggy as a result and full of bog oaks a couple of which are probably over 1000 yeas old. Pity they are not small enough to fit in a tank...
I live in Wakefield and have used Sandstone, grit stone and even bog wood taken from swampy ground in past years when money was tight just soaked it and scrubbed it until clean and solid can't say I ever had any issues. I'd say give it a go in a small way and see how you get on. Best of luck.
Agree lush growth might equal healthy plants but does that translate to healthy/happy fish given the methods used to achieve it? Take your point with regard the Chelated content but a weekly single dose will decrease in concentration over the week giving the fish a better chance of having a...
Hi all
I've been running EI for about 6 months and my plants are doing well with minimal problems. Before this I always ran low tech systems with Co2 and some weekly ferts for about 15 years but not to EI levels. I still under took weekly 40-50% water changes and could grow a large range of...
Hi all
Just purchased one of these to ensure the tank gets dosed with Macro, Micro and liquid CO2 as I've a memory like a sieve!
Anyone got any practical tips/experience of using this model?
Also do I need check valves? if so what do you recommend or will normal air line types be ok...
Thanks all for the pointers appreciated I'll take this on board.
Started reading the Tutorials, your correct things are a bit different to when I started 10 years ago with a Dennerle based system:eek:.
I'll start a journal so you can see how things work out once I feel ready to make a proper...
Hi all
Planning a new set up soon 100x50x50 ADA Amazonia soil, CO2 via in line Aquamedic diffuser, Ehiem professional 31200XET Thermo, circulation pump with Arcadia 4x39w T5's. So I guess from reading here High Tec and plan on trying EI fert dosing using a propitiatory dry mix for macro and...
Hi all
First post so go easy!
I've being lurking on here on and off for a few years! but have reached a stage where my tank is looking a bit sorry for itself and needs a make over. It was set up about 4 years ago and looked great then time became short and I had to revert to a more less...
