    I'll second the advice about kinked hoses. IME 12mm hoses tend to be OK, but the weight of 16mm with water in tends to pull everything down and kinks are far more common.

    How did you do the cycle? If there's only a small amount of bacteria in the filter then adding all your first fish in one go would put quite a strain on the filter. Adding the others would just exacerbate the problem and it could never catch up. Just guessing though. Plecs's can be quite messy...

    Presumably there are other acids produced in a closed system due to the breakdown of plant material, otherwise peat wouldn't be so acidic. I'm assuming tannic acid and such like.

    How is this worked out? Are atomic weights used to get the proportions? I'd be interested in the maths for this (my school chemistry was along time ago!)

    You can cut the tap water with pure RO to get the hardness you want, that way you can reduce the cost of the RO and won't need to add any minerals.

    I had BGA some time ago from that experience I couldn't support the theory of low nitrate/phosphate as my tank has high levels of both. However, it started when my water changes/filter cleaning lapsed due to work and it took a blackout to clear it. Even after removing every scrap and cleaning...
