Breeding Celestial Pearl Danio (Danio margaritatus)

Just a few thoughts (apologies if you're already doing this, I haven't read through the whole thing).... If you reduce the water level with the females in it and stop water changes for a few weeks, then replace half the water with rain/RO water at a lower temperature and introduce the males you...

    unusual fish

I've always thought the farlowella twig/whiptails catfish were high oxygen lovers, but don't know where I heard it/read it. Also, hillstream loaches - are they the ones that look a bit like plaice?! I thought they were cold water? Probably getting mixed up!

    Fish ID

I had some years ago and found them nippy with angels (used to nip at the pecs) but fine with anything with "normal" fins! I've got some rosy tetras at the moment and they're great. Didn't look spectacular in the shop but now they've grown into 2 males and 3 females, with displays going on...

    Gourami problems

I had a pair of moonlight gouramies for something like 6 years a while ago, but these small ones just aren't any good. I personally prefer the subtler wild forms, but it's my son's tank and red is his favourite colour, so what can you do?! I'll try and get a picture up I took of the dwarf the...

    Gourami problems

Hi all, A fishy question for a planted forum coming up, but I trust you all! For my sons tank he wanted dwarf gouramies and liked the blue form ones he saw. My wife went with him and bought a pair, although they were a pair of males. I'd heard dwarf gouramies weren't very robust these days and...

    Angels plant safe?

Blimey, they're even rarer than altums!! Must admit to not knowing much about them. Are they the ones with the upturned "noses" or are they the altums?

    Angels Hunting

I had some half grown angels and introduced a shoal of glowlights which I thought were too big and exactly the same thing happened. The angels chased them about and I was on the verge of removing them, but a couple of days later everything settled down and now they've all grown up to adulthood...

    Angels plant safe?

I'm a bit confused by the term "dwarf" angels? Are you talking about the commonly available Pterophyllum scalare type in the LFS? I've only heard of Dwarf angels in marine circles. There are the rarely seen Pterophyllum altum angels which do grow bigger, but aren't mentioned much. The "normal"...

    Harlequins Are A-Leaping

I think most fish jump when startled, just some do it more than others. You probably startled it as you walked past. My glowlight danios splash about a bit and jump when the lights go off!

    Green severum, browsing or eating?

I think Severums are known for eating plants, or I'm getting mixed up with something else. Shame, 'cos they're nice fish.

Glowlight danios are nice and swim in quite a tight shoal all over the tank, but predominantly in the top third. Quite active though. Apologies for recommending them again!

    Rosy Barbs

I kept ruby barbs in a planted tank and they were lovely. Wouldn't recommend them for anything less than a 3 footer though as they're quite lovely and of a decent size. Strangely, my siamese fighter took a dislike to the males and kept attacking them. I had to separate him after he took one of...

What fish foods do you use?

I've use Tetramin as well although I also get Aquarian sometimes because the local sainsburys sell it! Also frozen brineshrimp and bloodworm. I've found that my fish will only take daphnia if it's live and they refuse all freeze dried food. Do I just have fussy fish?

    copper Harlequins

If SE Asia if what you're after then rasboras and barbs are the thing. How about cherrys? Stay small, brightly coloured and males display well without agression. Or perhaps, the glowlight danio, Danio choprai, for the top layer? Wouldn't go well with the chocolates though as they're constant...

    Biotodoma cupido

Don't have any experience of them I'm afraid , although they certainly look interesting. Here's a pic from fishbase: It says that they grow to 9.7cm (4"), found in the amazon river basin and are very adaptable (pH 6 - 8 ). An article on PFK about a related species is here...

Rummy's rarely show their best in the shops because of the bright lights, noise, lack of cover etc. When they're happy, they're stunning.
  22. beeky

    Will these be suitable?

Clown loaches aren't really suitable as they get too large. The butterfly fish have large mouths so small fish won't really be safe and RTBS are one of my favourite fish but are a bit boisterous in anything less than 4 foot. Might be worth keeping the corys though depending on what your plans are.

Killifish are notorious jumpers. It only needs one to have a panic attack and then it spooks all of them. I lost a female Aphyosemion australe that jumped out of a 1cm square hole next to my filter intake. If there's a gap, they'll find it.

    When???

Yes, you'll need to add some source of ammonia as the filter bacteria will only grow if they have something to feed on. There's a school of thought that says that a heavily planted tank can be lightly stocked straight away, the idea being that the plants will contain the ammonia spike from...

    poecilia wingei (endler's)

Depends on how soft and acidic you want to go. They're related to guppies so are pretty hardy, pH 6.5 is probably OK, any more acidic and they''ll probably be unhappy. If you're thinking of keeping them with your chocolates then one of them is going to suffer I reckon.

Chocolate Gouramis - I have Fry and need Advice

How is it filtered? For fry a simple air operated sponge filter is quite good to have as little life forms grow on the sponge which the fry can then feed off. 2 Mysterious Deaths?

Some fish can have internal problems that can be there when bought or occur gradually over time that we just can't see. One thing I noticed though is that you say your nitrate goes from 20ppm to 40ppm in a week. This seems quite a jump especially for a planted tank and maybe wonder if it's...

IME, many of the tetras don't shoal much once they're comfortable in their surroundings, the exception seems to be rummy noses who follow each other about all the time.

    Need some ideas

Personally, I'd go with the cichlids. Puffers seem to much hassle to me and from what I've read even the smaller ones tend to nip each other. There are some lovely apistos out there and don't forget chequerboards, A. thomasi and N. anomala among others.

    Nanochromis transvestitus

Interesting stuff. Although live plants are always considered to make fish feel more at home, I've read that in nature many areas have no plants due to the blackwater lowering light levels too much and from water you're saying, the very low nutrients/salts in the water is maybe another factor...

fish to suit planted tank with hard water

How about some livebearers? Most of those come from hard water areas and although most will peck at the plants, they're just after the algae. If you go for some of the lesser known ones (limias etc) they won't breed as fast as say, guppies.
