    ADA Terra Base

Hi all, I'll be honest I'm amazed they've turned up after all this time. I was wondering whether they were waiting for the clay <"to naturally weather out"> before harvesting it? cheers Darrel

Hi all, That is fantastic. I always say <"good things come to those who wait">, so hopefully these will be a good thing. cheers Darrel

    Wabi-kusa fertiliser and mists

Hi all, Perfect. If you have hard tank water? Rain water would be better. That should do, probably alternate weeks, plain and fertiliser. cheers Darrel

Hi all, You can get additives to turn earthenware black. I had a look into it a few years ago when we looking at <"DIY baked clay substrates">. cheers Darrel

    Can I use this light in a wabi-kusa ?

Hi all, Should do. cheers Darrel

    Self watering tube

Hi all, You get quite a large cooling effect with a terracotta wine cooler. How much water evaporates depends on how warm and humid the day is, but if you fill one up with water on a warm, sunny, windy day it will empty pretty quickly, certainly much faster than a glazed pot will. If you want...

    Identity Help

Hi all, They are annuals, so will die after flowering. That is as big as the Whitlow grass will get. The <"Mouse-ear"> will branch up to about 10cm, and also has a little white flower with bifid petals, but this time with five petals. My wife often says that, although in her case I don't think...

    Identity Help

Hi all, It is “Whitlow grass” (Erophila verna agg.). Not real grass, but a Crucifer. It has four white petals, but they are deeply split into two. You also have a Cerastium, C. glomeratum ( Clustered Mouse-ear), the pale green hairy leaf. Cheers Darrel

My first wabikusa + how do you deal with the mould?

Hi all, Definitely ignore it. cheers Darrel

My first wabikusa + how do you deal with the mould?

Hi all, Very nice. Personally I'd ignore, it obviously isn't effecting plant growth. If you do want to treat it, because you aren't going to flood this, or add fish etc, you are safe to use a general purpose fungicide, even if it is copper (Cu) or sulphur (S) based. If you pop down to Wilkos...

    ADA Terra Base

Hi all, It should work OK, but I can't imagine how much they charge for the full set-up. Like that, I think that is right up there with Clive's immortal description of an external filter as a "pump in a bucket", it cuts straight to the chase. You could DIY one from a <"terracotta wine cooler">...

    Cyanobacteria on Wabi kusa

Hi all, The one that forms the "balls" of dark green gel is a <"Nostoc"> sp. I haven't had them in the rain-water tanks, but they've always grown in harder water tanks with mosses etc. I think there is still some growing around damper paving slabs at the back of the building I work in. Image...

    A Wardian Case

Hi all, I tried to find one a while ago, there is some information (and some more Wardian case bits) in this thread from 2013 <"Humidity over moisture">, first page is worth a read as well for those who are interested in the DSM. cheers Darrel

    Cyanobacteria on Wabi kusa

Hi all, Same with me, low nitrates (in fact low everything) but very little cyanobacteria. I originally wrote "no cyanobacteria", but there will always be some. Have a look at the Lenntech article <"General effects of eutrophication">, it lists a whole range of "algae" that are favoured by...

Journal First attempt at a Wabi Kusa

Hi all, Looking very promising. The leafy liverwort is doing well Yes I think you do. It isn't Sphagnum, but another type of moss, maybe <"Homalothecium sericeum">. Sphagnum would hold a lot more water, but that is probably the main difference. cheers Darrel

    Journal Starting point Wabi-Kusa

Hi all, I can't tell from the photo, but Bacopa has "opposite decussate" leaves, so if you looked from the apex of the stem the leaves would be like a cross, with each pair of leaves at right angles compared to the pair below. It doesn't look like that, the leaf pairs look more like they are...
