    New tank green algae outbreak

I would suggest doubling or tripling the liquid carbon. But before you do that, grab a few tufts of the algae, put them on a spoon or tiny container, and drop some pure liquid carbon on them, see if that kills them. I've strangely had green thread algae that would die while some just wouldn't...

What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 - Bacterial imbalance

I don't have much to add, but I do remember reading that overdosing on iron causes BBA and red algae. I can at least confirm that with red algae in my tank when I was dosing about 4x more traces than EI when I was trying out PPS-Pro. But my tank isn't the healthiest so it's just purely my own...

New High Tech Setup - Sudden Algae Outbreak

The JBL dropchecker kit doesn't come with the 4 dKH solution, so you'd need to manually measure the KH and pH of your tank water for a more accurate CO2 reading based off the KH-pH chart.

What exactly causes BBA? Part 2 - Bacterial imbalance

The explanation is... WITCHCRAFT!! That goes against everything we do in an indoor high-tech planted tank. No CO2, no filtration, no flow.. what else? No fertilisation? I've read these threads with interest, and I think it does partly explain what's happening in one of my tanks, at least...

    What exactly causes BBA?

If anyone's getting lazy (like me) and wanna get rid of BBA by just pouring chemicals into a tank (not even spot-dosing), you can try Ocean Free 0 Algae: http://www.rakuten.com.my/shop/acestoryaquatic/product/MD229/. I've been dosing it for about 2 weeks and BBA and some minor staghorn is almost...

    Is this algae?

Could it be this "red moss"? Caloglossa cf. beccarii. http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/2013/show382.html

    Sacrilege, I know :O

I've also been wondering about adding O2. But no way am I having a potential fire hazard in the form on an O2 tank! I was just thinking bog standard air pump connected to a cheap CO2 reactor. Diffuser won't work because the air pump won't have enough pressure. What do you guys think?

    Sacrilege, I know :O

I don't know. I have two tanks with the same water, soil and EI fertilisation and its happening in both tanks. The rocks used are different, so my 60L tank has a higher KH. The 60L tank has a spraybar along the back of the tank connected to an Eheim 2217. CO2 is diffused at 2 bps through an...

    Sacrilege, I know :O

I have tried this before. BBA growth kept in check, but plants suffer. Rotala leaves very small, only about 1/3rd of their normal size. Stem plants lose all their lower leaves. H.tennellum and hairgrass start turning brown. Blyxa aubertii (I think) leaves start melting too. As as result of all...

    Sacrilege, I know :O

This is something that has been bugging me too. I have never had my 300L tank not have BBA. Even when I inject 7-8bps and get a yellow drop checker and the fish are just 1 bps from suffocating. My flow is plentiful (3400 lph in a 300L tank)but distribution is probably far from perfect. Even when...

am I loosing the battle against brown algae?

Sounds like quite a lot of light, and though your plants are deficient, there isn't any algae at all. This is really something new to me.

am I loosing the battle against brown algae?

Thanks. How much lighting are you running on both tanks?

    Blue Green Algae on substrate

A 3-day blackout will kill it but if you don't tackle the causes, it'll just bounce right back. BGA is notoriously resilient. I've found that the best way is to ensure good flow around the tank. My own 60cm 60L tank was having BGA problems until I added a Hydor Koralia to help with circulation...

    Alien invasion of Algae

To me, adding fish from day 1 is only safe if the filter media or substrate is matured. Using new nutrient-high substrates like ADA Aquasoil, its not advisable to add fish on day 1 as it leaches a ton of ammonia for the first few weeks. Even more if you disturb it during scaping.

    Hair algae RUINING my tank!

I'd personally get rid of all affected moss ASAP. So far I've not been able to kill hair algae once they've taken hold. I like your tank by the way, the middle white sand part is interesting!

    Removing BGA without a blackout!

Hi, you can manually remove them by sucking them out with a small diameter tube. Use a toothbrush to scrape them off plants is required. Don't need to resort to chemicals if you ask me.

    BGA in new tank

Use an old toothbrush to remove as much Rhizo as possible, then do a 4-day blackout. Should be able to rid your tank of Rhizo.

Surface Scum, Dark stuff on Leaves, Yellow Gravel. HELP!

I have this on my non-CO2 lowtech tank too. Black stuff on some leaves, which I attributed to high temps (30'C on average here). Since I got a fan to cool down the water, it hasn't returned. Gravel still turns brown though, probably due to lack of circulation. I have an old Tetra EX90 on a 70L tank.

    Hairgrass Algae ID

Honestly speaking, I can't see the algae at all. Is it some sorta green hair type algae? If it is you need to trim and throw as much as possible away.

    Battling with Hair Algae

I suggest manual removal with a toothbrush, as much as possible every week. SAEs do eat hair algae, although they have to be younger SAEs as the older ones develope a taste for fish food.

    Algae ID

It's probably rhizo. Manually remove as much as possible with an old toothbrush first. Amano/Yamato shrimps are known to eat them too. BGA has a very obviously smell. You'll never forget it!

    Overdosed Flourish Excel - Nightmare!!

Any idea how much you actually dosed? I have a 160L tank with ~140L of water and at one point, I was dosing 40mL of Excel per day for a few days in a row. I also inject 2-3 bps of CO2 at the same time through an inline reactor. Did not get any fish or shrimp deaths. Perhaps your fauna were...

    Elodea to help stop BGA

I have to say, great use of pictures to explain a fact  And Elodea does ok in warmer water. I come from the tropics and Elodea is a weed in former mining ponds turned lakes. Which is incidentally the reason why I don't like Elodea, its just too common (no offence to those who like...

spot dosing liquid carbon - how long to kill BBA?

After spot dosing with liquid carbon (I use Seachem Excel), the tufts of BBA would either turn purplish or become translucent. That's when the algae eaters will start snacking on them. I guess its like stewing some beef, makes it soft enough for them to eat  Don't forget to turn off your...

Can't seem to get rid of GSA

Mark, just to confirm, when you added the extra PO4, did it kill existing GSA? Or did you manually removed all traces of GSA and increasing PO4 caused it to stay away? Mark (VXR version  ), thanks for the comments. Its a nightmare trying to keep it clean at the moment.

Can't seem to get rid of GSA

Hey Mark, I remember a post you made in your 60's journal, where you had some GSA on the Anubias, and you increased the PO4 way above normal and raised the MH lighting and it was gone within a few weeks. That statement really is my holy grail right now! Anyway, I'm gonna try a 4 or 5 day...

Can't seem to get rid of GSA

Thanks for the advice guys. I *think* I have enough CO2 based on observations and the drop checker. I'll have a go at modifying the lighting duration and see how that goes. Another question I have is, will tweaking the CO2 + PO4 + lighting kill existing GSA? I don't want to remove the rocks to...
