Are discus really that hard to keep? Now with photos :)

Nice discus you have there. Good that you're upgrading to 125 gal. 75 gal is sufficient for them at this stage, but once they start pairing and laying eggs, more space is needed since the mating pair will defend their space.

Are discus really that hard to keep? Now with photos :)

In my personal experience... :D Discus are definitely more finnicky than other common types of aquarium fish. Seeing that you have wild-caught scalare, I don't think you'll have a big problem with discus. The first thing you need to decide is how far you want to go with your discus. If you...

I've had them for quite a few months now. They were procured in two batches. First batch were fed beefheart at the discus farm. Out of the 4, 3 of them now take both commercial granules, frozen bloodworms and live tubifex while one of them only takes frozen bloodworms or live tubifex. Another 2...

Honestly speaking, the stuff he puts into his mix sounds pretty much like commercial dried pellets/granules/flakes, so I don't quite understand the point of it. Dried foods ain't that expensive, I use Tetrabits granules myself. His mix might be more useful for getting mega growth and spawns, but...

Save the last Discus of Congo.

My experience with discus is... feed them whatever they like to eat. Some like pellets (Tetrabits), some only take live tubifex, some take frozen bloodworms. I've never tried beefheart/porkheart before because I can't find them ready made and I don't wanna go through the trouble of making my...

    Flow in Angelfish tank

In my opinion, if you're not gonna plant it at all, then fairly low flow is good enough as long as fish stocking is reasonable. It's more about removing ammonia than getting CO2 all over the tank then. Floaters get CO2 from the air.

    Trigonostigma heteromorpha or espei

Hmm..hard to say. Coloring looks like heteromorpha but the size of the "lamb chop" looks more like espei. I'd still guess heteromoropha

    Hiding Fish

This should be a clue, the lights may be too bright and the fish are simply looking for shade. Especially LEDs are really bright and glaring. Maybe you can have a slower ramp time but longer lights on time so your plants aren't affected too much.

    Discus Database

Great write up! About your tank size recommendations, are they only for non-planted tanks? Because even a medium planted 3-foot tank is a bit small for 6 discus in my opinion. Sharing some pictures of my discus. He/she's about 4.5-5 inches now. Originally started with 4 of them, 2x 3 inches...

    Discus tank

This sounds like its gonna a really great tank! What I've always dreamed of. Unfortunately I don't have time to feed my discus more than once a day because I leave for work at 6.30 in the morning and won't be back till 6 in the evening. Lights out at 10. Also not willing to feed beef heart so my...

    Discus tank

Just to share, I have a fully planted 300L tank and original had 4 discus but 3 of them died due to bullying. How many discus you can keep will depend on your planting. Check out Filipe Olivera's 120L, 240L and 300L discus tanks - FAAO - Aquascaping Also check out Korakot's discus tank on here...

    Discus info please

Is there one discus bullying the others? Thats what happened in mine. Also, I found that mine are dark and unhealthy looking if CO2 injection is too high as well.

With the fish swimming and the floating plants swirling around, it really looks like some sorta impressive stage show. Good one George!

Usually when the scales become extended like that, its dropsy. I had a few SAEs and various tetras develope dropsy individually.

    The most unhelpful/friendly otto ever?

Mine are a bit mad too. They like to stick themselves to the glass while I'm filling up the tank after a water change, directly in the flow of tap chlorinated water. Maybe the chlorine cleans their skin or gets rid of excess algae in their suckers or something...
