If you want to pack out the substrate then Tesco cat litter is just a few £s a bag, you can lay a base and fill net bags to stack up the back. If you need more then Pets at Home sell the same moler clay for £12 for a huge sack full.

Good luck. Test kits are extreamly controversial, at best they may offer a basic guid line at worse, a totally misleading result. Lights can be very cheap ie 20w LED flood light £20 or less, there are a few massive tanks powder by theses style of light offering great success.

Quite feasible, many koi ponds and swimming pools have auto back flush. A swim spar or Jacuzzi back flushable sand filter with timer valves would work.
