I would find it hard to believe that dried flake uses good quality ingredients.

I would not recommend frogs over fish, especially in a fish tank. They are really boring and don't do much at all, they tend to hang against the glass near the surface for hours on end. To be honest they are probably bored to death. I think African clawed frogs have some use in human pregnancy...

You can do regular water changes but 5 gallons is a small amount of water to keep stable so you will always have to be vigilant and watchful!

I am not sure if many folk will want to wait 12 weeks! Adding dead shrimp or ammonia just seems like going backwards to me, I am more .... add plants, do water changes and wait six weeks, type of guy.

I have never had much luck getting fish to shoal, I think it is because of the very reasons fish like to shoal! If you remove the danger, remove the stress, add plenty of food and keep the water healthy then the fish seem to relax and don’t feel the need to shoal up.

The one I owned was a right bad boy, extremely pugnacious & territorial! Beautiful fish though....

Good luck with your fish, I believe many people find them quite hard to keep alive for any length of time but if you study their requirements and except the commitment then perhaps you can give it a good life :)

The op (Jason ) tank has 57 x flow, 13 hours of light & co2 injection of some kind ! And yes that is fifty seven times the volume of the tank every hour. Apparently this keeps the fish fit......! Jason has another thread going that has more details by the way.

Martin, am I right in thinking your tank is only recently set up & you have three amazon swords it it...if that is the case then hydrogen sulphide is unlikely! Also bear in mind your test kits are unlikely to be accurate! Keep up regular water changes, 20 % a day or more will only benefit the tank.

Hillstream loaches might be OK, lots of smaller fish like barbs but probably just end up as goldfish food! Certain catfish would survive but would probably eat the goldfish in the end, common plelcos might be a good bet although they get pretty big, they will definitely live alongside goldfish...
