    Quality of fish food ingredients

I would find it hard to believe that dried flake uses good quality ingredients.

    Aquatic Frogs?

I would not recommend frogs over fish, especially in a fish tank. They are really boring and don't do much at all, they tend to hang against the glass near the surface for hours on end. To be honest they are probably bored to death. I think African clawed frogs have some use in human pregnancy...

    Blind cave fish

They just dont seem to rest for one second! It is a fascinating case study of how evolution has removed the necessity of sight when it is not required, You would think they would make a great classroom fish. I could build a cave tank…….

    Blind cave fish

I have kept Blind Cave Fish in the past, they are hyper active and fascinating fish but … they drove me mad in the end, what with thier never ending movement, flying around the tank (220l ) jumping out and generally bugging me! However I do miss them and I plan to get a few more this coming...

    Fish after drystart?

That is very little information you are offering, are you going to be injecting C02? What about tank size and equipment? How about a picture?

    Red belly piranha

There was a quite long thread on this forum about a guy specialising in Piranhas, he was obsessed with a 40 x flow rate!

    Can I stock this?

It is a small tank but perhaps a few dwarf corydoras would appreciate the terrain.

Yes but they are a shoaling fish and best kept in numbers. How did you knife fish fair?

    Glass Catfish Experience

I keep them as well, they are peaceful fish but do grow quite big, there was a fad of selling dye injected ones a few years ago!

    Fish with personality/character?

Blind cave fish are extremely active and very interesting, I enjoyed mine for a few months before I found them a bit to noticeable and then nothing short of annoying ! However they might be a good choice for some people. My tank is alongside the television and the hyper active cave fish became...

Kuhli loaches in open top tanks?

It might help to keep a large group but they do grow quite big so you would need a big tank and plenty of hiding places, you would need to factor them into the overall stocking level .... basically they are nocturnal . If one was really keen a blue moon light at the end of the main lighting...

Kuhli loaches in open top tanks?

I have always kept 4-5 of them in my main tanks, you rarely see them while the lights are on although one might occasionally appear, shoot up to the surface and dive back down or even swim up and down the front glass for 10 minutes but then I might go months without seeing any at all! They are...

Kuhli loaches in open top tanks?

I dont think i have ever experienced that particular trait but i can see how one could think their loach has escaped due to fact that they can disappear for weeks months or even years without being seen!

    Most expensive livestock

Not aquarium fish but in the late 80s early 90s when koi carp were selling for ridiculous prices I laid out large sums of bank loan money on stock fish for my business . In the early 80s I worked on a koi farm as a general manager, we had many imported Japanese fish for sale at over £10.000...

    Question regarding Ropefish

Kuhils are beautiful fish but you probably need 100 to be able to see one! They must be one of the most elusive fish out there, if there is place to hide they will find it. There will the odd occasion you do get a glimpse of one with the lights on but don’t expect full daytime activity. Still...

    Question regarding Ropefish

I think they grow pretty big, 12’ or more and eat any small ish they can catch at night. I would think 200l would be a minimum size tank. They were really popular where I live around 10 years ago but I have not seen one for sale in recent years.

    NEED SOME HELP

The thing is .. do you think your LFS has suitable testing equipment and a technician to operate it? It would be a huge investment for them! I would think (like my LFS) they use the same grade test kits that you can buy in their shop?

What else do I need for fish?

You can do regular water changes but 5 gallons is a small amount of water to keep stable so you will always have to be vigilant and watchful!

    First planted tank/cycling questions

I am not sure if many folk will want to wait 12 weeks! Adding dead shrimp or ammonia just seems like going backwards to me, I am more .... add plants, do water changes and wait six weeks, type of guy.

    Schooling fish recommendation

I have never had much luck getting fish to shoal, I think it is because of the very reasons fish like to shoal! If you remove the danger, remove the stress, add plenty of food and keep the water healthy then the fish seem to relax and don’t feel the need to shoal up.

    Elephant nose fish

Tom Barr has kept them for many years, unfortunately he does not post on here anymore but it proves they can survive in our style of tanks. I did ask him about them once, I seem to remember he fed them live food..... http://www.ukaps.org/forum/threads/video-of-dutch-120-gallon-version-2-0.31117/

Good luck with your fish, I believe many people find them quite hard to keep alive for any length of time but if you study their requirements and except the commitment then perhaps you can give it a good life :)

I am a softy mate..... to be honest they are a great fish to keep in the fact that they just never stop moving but, they also bite every single moving object! My misses said she cant wait to get them out of our house as they distract her from the tele!

    Blind cave fish

It is no good they have to go!!!! Blind cave fish

They also like to peck your fingers, they will home in on your hand the moment you put it in the water. Blind cave fish

They are not a fish I have every kept before, thought about it many a time but never took the plunge! I very naively though they would stay in the cave but now I understand they don't know what a cave is! I don't think they are aggressive towards other fish but they do bump into them & steal...

    Blind cave fish

I bought four of the little devils last week, I though they might look good in a new scape I have just put together. 43. foxfish

    my piranha

The op (Jason ) tank has 57 x flow, 13 hours of light & co2 injection of some kind ! And yes that is fifty seven times the volume of the tank every hour. Apparently this keeps the fish fit......! Jason has another thread going that has more details by the way.

Do Cories not like EI or CO2?

Martin, am I right in thinking your tank is only recently set up & you have three amazon swords it it...if that is the case then hydrogen sulphide is unlikely! Also bear in mind your test kits are unlikely to be accurate! Keep up regular water changes, 20 % a day or more will only benefit the tank.

    stocking advice on a 285l

Six discus on the own would look great, I would stick to that myself. Like road master, I also like to look after my fish as best I can & match naturale conditions as best as I reasonably can. What is possible might not be what is best for the fish!
  47. foxfish

    Elusive Corydoras

Yes, I think they would just because there is safety in numbers & more competition for food. At times in my tank, I cant see a single fish then a few mins later there are 30 or so buzzing around - I like that situation! I would add a few at a time though as they are hungry little souls and a big...

    Elusive Corydoras

I have Corydoras melini & sterbai, the melini are the bigger ones, some are at least 6 years old & really look it, not because they are damaged but they just behave like old bossy men! The Melini breed all year around & there are always babies swimming around the tank, the sterbai show regular...

    Elusive Corydoras

I dont have any other fish just my Cory's but they are like a swarm all over the tank, very active at feeding time. I feed micro worms several times a day, the worms are - well micro - but the fish spends ages finding them & swim all over the hard scape at all levels searching.
  50. foxfish

    Elusive Corydoras

I am a great fan of Cory's, I keep shoals of 20 +. I find mixing species to increase numbers wont work so you are best to keep a min of 12 of each & even then if you really want to see active fish then 20 or more will do the job. My fish regularly breed with no specific help from me other than a...

    Good companions for fancy goldfish?

Hillstream loaches might be OK, lots of smaller fish like barbs but probably just end up as goldfish food! Certain catfish would survive but would probably eat the goldfish in the end, common plelcos might be a good bet although they get pretty big, they will definitely live alongside goldfish...

which fish for strong flow please

    Shoaling fish

I must say that Denison barbs are just about my favourite fish, yes they are quite large growing to about 150mm. They have become endangered in the wild but are now farm bred & readily available, unfortunately most are bought in two or threes & then put into a small community tank! But these...

New tank - new fish advice gratefully received

I guess you have some time to decide especially if you intend to cycle the tank fishless? Most fish are fine to live in hard water just not breed in hard water, your plants wont mind either. Bottom dwellers, carpets & a deep tank

At least you already recognise that it will not be easy to grow carpet plants or in fact maintain them either!
