Weight of a large tank upstairs?

you have to make sure you're going across the joists. I've kept a 100gal tank in a top floor flat, with no problems.

Water changes (how long it takes)

To change 50% water of my 100gal, takes me an hour but doesn't involve a lot of effort. That's with a hose pipe syphoning water out into the bath, then another hose pipe filling from the tap in the kitchen. If I'm cleaning filters, I do it in the bath while the water is draining (I keep the...

    hobby or obsession

Hmmm... good question. When it's an obsession, most of my internet time is spent looking at fish/plant stuff on the internet. When it's a hobby, I'm mostly on other sites. When it's an obsession, I'm pruning every day, water changing practically every day, cleaning the glass every day...

    changing tanks

That sounds alright - your container, with filter and heater, will basically be a 'tank' that isn't made of glass. They'll be fine. Maybe put some wood/plants in it to break up the space/give hiding places etc? SAEs might become a bit aggressive towards each other in such a confined space...

so I forgot to do the 'before' picture. But here's 'after'! I need to do a general polish of the cabinet, it's covered in finger marks. But the difference from before...

Show me your tidy cabinet! (Now piccies of my tidy cabinet!

oh goodness your tanks are tidy! Mine would take a day of tidying to get like one of them! I just chuck stuff in/around and I can't even open the doors properly... I've let it go and it won't come back!

Transferring plants from an Ich tank?

I'd worry about transfering them because the Esha treatment is copper based, and copper kills shrimp. If it were me, I'd start again with fresh plants.

Whats the life span of your aquascape?

I let my two tanks 'evolve'. I don't really have any particular aquascape in mind. As long as it looks half decent, I'm happy. It's all trial and error for me.

    Things I wish I'd known

circulation, circulation, circulation! Wash filter sponges in old tank water not under the tap. Position large tanks within easy reach of taps (for filling up) and windows (for dumping old water).

    Things I wish I'd known

although it can trigger spawning :-D my angel fish lay eggs after a cold water change. Not TOO cold though. Only a couple of degrees lower than the tank

    Ideas?

A HOB isn't such a good idea if you're using pressurised CO2 because it drives it off. But it works alright if you're using easy carbo or excel (liquid carbon supplements). I'm pretty happy with my HOB, but I'm using easy carbo.

    Moving House

I moved my 100gal into a top floor flat (3rd floor with bends), using a rope, myself (small built but strong 5'1 girl), and my partner (thickset 5'10 man). I highly recommend the rope, it was a lifesaver! Doing it over a few days is definately the best way of doing things. You can take your...

    Moving House

I never keep my old water. Because my tank is 100gals and it's just too much hassle. I always set up a holding tank or two at the other end (with the filters from the big tank), a day in advance so it's the right temparature for the fish. Then I move the fish first. Then once the move has...

Ammonia Spike and what to do with fish?

In my nano tank it has taken two months for the ammonia/nitrite to disappear. But that was without a mature filter, I cycled my filter from scratch. Good luck!

My magazine came in the post today, I had a quick flick through and there is lots of stuff there! I haven't read it properly yet though.

PFK Planted Tank Special - 19 pages

That is true. However, if I hadn't already seen George's work on this forum, I wouldn't mind at all and I probably wouldn't even register that all the pictures are from George's tanks. I like the reef articles too, even though I don't keep marines. I also like the equipment articles and...

    50 % water changes

I chuck my water conditioner straight into the tank just before I put the water in, near the output of my hose pipe. I have a 100gal, luckily it's next to the bathroom, so to empty it I run a hose into the bath. When I need to clean the filters (every other week) I put the plug in the bath, so...

    Rekord 60

If it were me, I'd go low tech with this one. I like the idea of the dark amazon basin with lemon tetras, I think that could look really good. I don't know a lot about it though - what plants grow in the dark bits of the amazon? I think black water might look really effective with the lemon...

Move to about 3 hours away, how to keep bacteria?

I've heard it takes 12 hours for filter bacteria to die (when kept wet of course) so you should be alright. I've moved house many times and I usually put all my media in a bucket of tank water with a powerhead running (for a little bit of water circulation) when I can plug it in.

    Thank You Secret UKaps Santa

Thankyou to my secret Santa, my box arrived today and contained lots of useful stuff (moss grids, root tabs, useful algae scraper, plant pots...and some stems of a plant I was after!) hurray for Santa and Tom! Plant is in the foreground at the moment, where it will get lots of light and grow...

Shop Has Never Heard of ADA!

^That's very true. I used to work in a fairly big LFS and I don't recall ever selling any plant substrate. The shop stocked a couple of brands (but not ADA), there was just never any interest.

Going away for a week - Help needed!

I'm in the same position, I'm going away tommorow. I have frozen my ferts in ice cube trays in the correct amounts, and the girl who's coming in to feed the cats is going to drop them in the tank every day.

thanks guys, I will use both those ideas!

    anchoring stem plants after trimming.

I think part of my problem is I have the wrong substrate? It is just normal sand. I'm moving house in a year, so I didn't want to fork out for aqua soil, if it will all turn to mud in a year when I move it. My tank is 100gals, so that's hundreds of pounds worth of AS. My problem is, when...

Are there any great female aquascapers?

http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... scape.html this might interest you. I'm a girl, but I'm rubbish because i've only just started so you won't be interested in me. I've kept fish for years, but this is my first attempt at a planted tank. I'd say I'm quite competitive. And I'm also...
