    Am I a shrimp killer?

Plants will eat up some of the nitrite as it is a source of ammonia (or is that ammonium???). I do wonder at the TDS too as I've got two nanos that have until recently had weekly water changes with just RO and I had TDS over 200. I assumed it was down to my TPN+.
  2. hotweldfire

    Am I a shrimp killer?

I'm at a loss as to the cause to be honest. I don't think it is a rapid water change leading to a TDS swing. I do a 1/3 change on P@H 27l every week and never have any issues with the sakura in there. Mind I am using RO cut with tap so it might not be far off what the TDS in the tank is. But I'm...

    Big coloured shrimp

Female cherries/sakuras can get up to the size of small male amanos but takes them quite a while to get that big. Caridina baubalti (sp.) tend to look pretty big, come in green and blue varieties, colour can be a bit weak though. Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk 2

    Molting with eggs

I've seen a lot of berried blue pearls in my main tank over the last couple of months. Those of you who know what happened to the shrimp in that tank a few months ago will know what a relief it is for me to see berried shrimp again. However, I've not seen one shrimplet. Not one. Nematodes - where the hell did they come from

Yeah, weird crap like worms and copepods always turn up when I'm setting up a new tank. Who knows how they get in. When I rescaped my main tank I was in the garden attaching moss to manzi wood. Moss was sitting in a bowl of tap water. An hour later I noticed loads of planaria in the bowl...

    First shrimp tomorrow!

One obvious nugget - drip acclimatise as slowly and over as long a period as you can. Also, small weekly water changes are good. Crap builds up faster in a shrimp tank than you'd expect so regular changes important. But large changes will stress some shrimp.

    Horned nerites

Thanks. I have a similar problem with assassins in my main tank - they end up with blunted ends to their shells eventually. Unfortunately the pond snails they're meant to be eating seem to be a bit harder. Nerites look well and truly done for I'm afraid.
  10. hotweldfire

    Horned nerites

Thanks. Have you kept them in a low PH/high TDS tank? The reason I ask is that I got them from ADC who say they keep them in all their planted tanks. Most of those (if not all) will have injected co2 therefore PH likely to be under 7. So I was wondering if it might actually just be water...

Shown absolutely no interest in an algae wafer dropped right on top of them. In fact my gouramis have eaten that instead (eventually). UV : Any value for a shrimp tank ?

Yes, I have tried one of these. Not the lapwater one you're watching is it? If so, you can have mine if you like. I bought it 'cos I thought it might help with bacterial infections but clogs up really fast. Don't know if it does help or not.

Am keeping caridina meridionalis. Dunno if they class as bumble bee but they is stripey mate. Also keeping a few CBS. Both in RO water. Been cutting it in my main tank with some tap because of the hosepipe ban but generally use pure RO and add GH booster etc.

Hmm, wish I'd read this thread before buying a pair and putting them in a 12l with my caridina meridionalis. The shrimp spend the whole time on the sponge covering the filter inlet. Striped rcs

Yep, this is quite common. I have a few like that. I read once on shrimpnow that the ones with the stripe tend not to breed so true, i.e. the offspring are less likely to have strong red colour, but have not tested that.

    Pregnant Cherry Shrimp Death

Almond leaves are good for prevention but if you got an infection that's leading to losses I wouldn't mess about. I'd go in heavy with a week's course of full dose paraguard. Spank the bacterial infection hard. If you mess about with half doses etc you'll just end up with resistant bacteria...

    RCS disappearing without a trace!

Minnows are big enough to eat the babies and maybe the juvies but won't be able to manage the adults. Even then if you've got enough hiding places in the form of moss etc the babies should be mainly safe to grow. Paradoxically it may be that your initial breeding success is the cause via a...
