One obvious nugget - drip acclimatise as slowly and over as long a period as you can. Also, small weekly water changes are good. Crap builds up faster in a shrimp tank than you'd expect so regular changes important. But large changes will stress some shrimp.

Am keeping caridina meridionalis. Dunno if they class as bumble bee but they is stripey mate. Also keeping a few CBS. Both in RO water. Been cutting it in my main tank with some tap because of the hosepipe ban but generally use pure RO and add GH booster etc.

Yep, this is quite common. I have a few like that. I read once on shrimpnow that the ones with the stripe tend not to breed so true, i.e. the offspring are less likely to have strong red colour, but have not tested that.

Almond leaves are good for prevention but if you got an infection that's leading to losses I wouldn't mess about. I'd go in heavy with a week's course of full dose paraguard. Spank the bacterial infection hard. If you mess about with half doses etc you'll just end up with resistant bacteria...

Occasional unexplained deaths are a classic sign of a bacterial infection. Why it should only affect females though I don't know.

Agreed, you can't trust the test kits. Different brands have given me fundamentally different results on the same sample of water. London tap water is pretty full of nitrates though (and all sorts of other nasties) so I've switched to just RO.

RE: identifying the substance, just want to flag again that whatever it is doesn't harm snails at all. They are thriving in the main tank now and I didn't see any casualties when the shrimp went. Don't know if that helps to identify it.

Also, a quick update. No further losses to report. The three blue pearls in the main tank keep on rocking and the sakuras and remaining golden bees all seem fine in the nano. I have added a new tester shrimp into the main tank late last week and it's also fine. Unfortunately the loss of the...

No worries. Bacterial problems are much more widespread in shrimp tanks than most people realise I reckon. Have a look at the tutorials on shrimpnow! There's a couple on there about bacterial problems and one on paraguard.

Only time I've seen an assassin take out one of my shrimp is when that shrimp is on it's last legs anyway, stumbling around like it was drunk. Fish are a different matter. Only keep mine with otos, pygmy cories and microrasbora. Even then shimplets are vulnerable without a large amount of cover.
