    Heron proofing pond

    Food for thought. Ta.

    Heron proofing pond

Our pond has walls of sleepers and is then dug to a total depth of about 2ft, with an area of about 3.5m². (See diagram.) We know herron visits are a significant risk in this area. There are plants in baskets that give fish cover for abouit half the pond's area. I was thinking about rinning...

    Pond substrate

IIRC it is good to have a certain amount of mulm in a pond, but is it worfth having a load of gravel, pebles or anything like that? All the plants are in baskets.

    New pond / old stock

It's not just cost that I have to consider. There are other family members that will have opinions on how much time I spend dominating the garden when I should be doing more important things. ;-)

    New pond / old stock

Ah. My pond will probably be about the same sizeasyour holding tank.

    New pond / old stock

When you say you have fish in a vat, what size are the fish, and the vat, and how many fish are in there!

    New pond / old stock

    Thanks.

    New pond / old stock

Thanks very much. That's reassuring. Golden Orf, Shabunkins and small Koi. If the bacteria is pretty dormant at the moment, will it make any difference if the filter doesn't have water cycling through it for a week?

    New pond / old stock

We're about to move house. The old house has a pond but the new owners don't want to keep it. The new house doesn't have a pond, but I'm going to install one. I'll be taking the pump, filter, fish and plants with us, but the new onwer has agreed it's ok to leave the fish and plants for a week...

    Relocation

It's probable we will be moving house in the next 6 months and there's a good chance whoever buys our house will rip out our pond. (It's a long story. Don't ask.) It pains me to think it will be destroyed and the fauna displaced. At the least, we would expect to take the fish with us and create...

    Evaporation

So obvious when you think about it like that. Thanks.

    Evaporation

Every year I stress about pond leaks and completely rebuilt our waterfall last summer. How much evaporation should I expect? It's about 40 sq ft and no more than 2'6" deep with a waterfall. Any thoughts on what we should expect?

    Barley

    Thanks. I'll look it up.

    Barley

I was in an LFS the other day and saw what I can only describe as time bales of barley straw (?) for controlling pond algae for £15. This seemed like extortion to me and I was wondering what the cheaper alternatives are.

    Opinions on pressurised filters

    Ah. Now I understand.

    Opinions on pressurised filters

I wasn't trying to be argumentative - just clarify whether the difference was worth the extra money or whether the Laguna was a good filter in it's own right. No offence intended.

    Opinions on pressurised filters

Point taken, but no matter how good a Rolls Royce is, a BMW M5 is still a really good car and a **** load cheaper. But I take it you'd buy the Roller no matter the premium?

    Opinions on pressurised filters

Thanks Martin. Would you say they are significantly better than Laguna?

    Opinions on pressurised filters

This is a little off topic, bearing in mind where this thread has ended up, but does get back towards the original question .... I'm considering getting a new preasurised filter (having considered all the above points I think it is the best option for my pond) and was trying to find out what...

    Spring overhaul

Our pond needs a massive overhaul and I assume spring is the right time to do it.  Due to an electrical fault over the winter there's been no filtration for a few months and the water is hideous and I'm confident there's a mass of sludge at the bottom. The plants (mostly Irises, Lillies and...

    Repairing concrete waterfall

Not really bothered how long it takes. It's going to be a right royal PITA at best. Rebuilding from scratch is not an easy option due to the height, acute slope, and large shrubs surrounding it. And even then, I think some degree of concrete / mortar / etc will be needed. (That's how it was...

    Repairing concrete waterfall

We have a 70sq ft pond with a small feeder pond about 5f above it and a waterfall inbetween. The waterfall is leaking and needs repair work. Although I've not investigated fully, I think there is a base layer of matting, then one or two layers of butyl liner and some sort of concrete mix on...
