    DIY Bright Sand?

I have actually seen it sold in most of the Maidenhead Aquatics shops i've been to... should just call up your nearest and see if they'll order it.

    Annoying thing adout ADA Aquasoil...

Just dig it right down and persevere, it'll grow out fine. I know what you mean though, I'm looking at a clump of HC thats just floated loose as I type  Just get it back in and eventually it'll anchor itself.

    Substrate Questions

Thats a big tank. I would just mix up your old substrate with a few bags of new EC and some inert small grain gravel. plants will grow fine if you dose the water column well. Would invest in dry ferts for a tank that size :) Good luck!

    ada?

Why? From using the normal stuff with my new set up, I feel that the powder type would've been perfect for the small rooted plants for the ground cover, HC, Glosso etc... What's the cons?

    DIY Bright Sand?

Well my local MA store does sell Unipac Zambezi. Near £20 for a bag of what I mostly won't need... add that to a bag of white sand to mix, then for the price, I might as well get a bag of ADA Bright sand... so I did. Just got it this morning and its very very nice. Would've been nice to see...

Yeah I was going to use that, but i've got a load of old sand/gravel substrate thats loaded with bacteria I want to use. Plus I think my ram will go mad at the polystyrene if he sees it. What about spuds to pack out substrate? :D maybe not.

Well I've been over to creative aquascaping union and read up on substrate layouts and reckon I can use a pair of these :) and fill them with substrate to build up the back and cover with Amazonia soil.

    Soaking Aquasoil before use

Been reading about some batches of AS leeching ammonia more than others... a bit hit and miss. Some do a few water changes with a mature filter and done. Others do daily 60% WC for a week, use Purigen and mature filter etc... then still get a massive ammonia spike. I'm starting to dread it as...

    DIY Bright Sand?

Ahh that Zambezi looks great, just a little bit of white sand. Not sure if its by Hagen but I know of the one from AE. Seems very fine. Have to go on the hunt for that Zambezi I think :D

    DIY Bright Sand?

Zambezi? Have to look into that. I just remember using a black sand from 'Fish'r'Fun' or something it was called. Just a cheap packet but it looked great, though I could use something like that with a large amount of aqua sand. Its less orange than silicone or play sand.

    DIY Bright Sand?

Well as I'm sure we can all agree, its fairly pricey... as far as sand goes. What I'm wondering is can there be a way of replicating the look of it using a mixture of different sands? Play sand with a certain amount of black sand, with maybe some larger grain of substrate. Any ideas? Or should...

Would I be able to lay Eco OR Aqua Soil on top of a mix of Tetra-plant substrate and sand? I've got the substrate of a 3 ft and 2 ft tanks that are going to be useless once my new 4 ft is set up. Just want to know if I could use the base layers of these tanks to bulk up the substrate of my new...

You're right, I know its fine for plants but I was just thinking back to when I had discus. They hated it, and I have soft water fish which I know show up much better colours when in soft water.

Bit weary about the 'bad' batch too. My kH is 3 GH about 13! ph 6.8-7.0. The KH and pH is only lowered in my tanks because of the co2. My tap water is ph 7.8 and Kh about 8-10. horrible stuff.

Well I've found a cheap supplier of Eco-Complete and I've read that its a good alternative to aqua soil. But!! (always a but) Whats this about raising the hardness of the water? If my tap water got any harder it would be jelly!! How long does it last and does it stabilize well after?

    AquaSoil Leeching

Oh ok. Just that I'm having this exact same quandary, but I'm going through with it. Think I may do the 'Tom Barr Dry start' but I'm thinking I may use Purigen when I first fill the tank just in case any ammonia is still present.

    AquaSoil Leeching

Will purigen or Zeolite affect the biological filtration? Seeing as it takes ammonia away from the bacteria?
