superb! this was one of the last posts i was reading before i went away and its one of the first few ive read since returning. its been brilliant to see how you have done with breeding them and its been an interesting read!

    Fallen Tree

Superb set up! Thats the first time ive seen an engineering feat like that in a tank!
  5. krazypara3165

Supernova - from eBay to NA

I think that's a vast improvement! I wasn't a big fan of the wood. my only criticism is the 4 rocks at the very front just don't look right......... however I am terribly useless at aquascaping!

    Tank at Home

Although I love discus you have made the right choice, you can concentrate on the planted aspect more! My personal opinion would be to go for the larger tank if there is no scope for an upgrade and get a nice large shoal of fish. it might be worthwhile looking for the threads on here with deep...

    Tank at Home

Its a very hard choice! I love discus and I have sacrificed the planted aspect on a big level to cater for their needs better. Try joining bidka.org and reading a few posts in the forum it will give you a better understanding on the aspects for keeping discus and whats required.
  8. krazypara3165

    Tank at Home

My personal experience is this..... (this time last year I was in the same position as you) For the time being concentrate on the planted aspect of your tank and leave the discus for now. I tried both last year after never owning a planted tank or discus and it was very hard. unfortunately...

    Tank at Home

It sounds good. Only fault I can see is stocking. Discus ideally need to be in groups of 6 or more and from my personal experience they are not overly tolerant to co2 its not too bad I suppose if they are a breeding pair. They also require a higher temprature than most plants are comfortable with.

    Rescape. going to low-tech

still not happy with the wood :/ so I have taken it out for now. I popped up to TGM on Saturday morning and had a brew and a chat with the owner, who nearly persuaded me to go back to high tech, however as it will be at the expense of the discus and because I love Alastair's tank i am sticking...

    Rescape. going to low-tech

Tapwater is a touch on the high side for nitrates (usually 20-30ppm) gh and kh below 5 ph around 7. Cant be too bad as I have had wrigglers from the discus
  12. krazypara3165

    Rescape. going to low-tech

Cheers Edvet! At the moment my discus are kept 29-30 but I indent to drop it down a degree to benefit the plants a bit more. I have recently debated setting up a sump but the cost and the time to set one up put me off a little. at the moment I have x2 2000lph cannisters which pretty much never...

    Rescape. going to low-tech

Cheers for the advice. I keep forgetting about the green machine for wood! Ibe never been, but its only 50 mins down the road. If its open on sunday I think that will be my first point of call.

    Rescape. going to low-tech

This may be a long one.......... As some of you are aware i have been a member on here for over a year now and i have learnt a lot along the way. ive had a fluval edge, a custom 10l, and a 4ft monster. i'll ignore the smaller tanks for now, so heres how it started! It started with an all...

    Competition journal

Well finally got the tank!! The first thing ive realised is that its very very narrow! If i do the river idea instead of acriss the width of the tank id have to do a very small cross section of one from the front to the back of the tank (maybe just odd center?) Going to try out some layout...

    Competition journal

Little update..... ive been searching through the posts on the all pond solutions facebook page and ive hunted down the other two winners ideas. One was nearly identical to mine, so im thinking the river idea would set mine off beautifully. The other was 'a mini crab tank with bogwood and live...

Cheers everyone, all great ideas! Moss shouldnt be a problem. I am getting some from a very generous member on here and if it comes to it i have flame moss and christmas moss that i can butcher from my discus aquarium :) Really lime the river idea.... what substrate would be best to use? And...

    Competition journal

ive got the 285l aquarium, x2 2000lph filters with uv, a 120cm 4 bar t5 and a 120cm 2 bar t5 spare and cabinet for the tank. I can only fault the cabinet for its poor quality, everything else is superb.
  24. krazypara3165

    Competition journal

Good idea! I was thinking along the lines of using a slate base and drilling and screwing the wood onto it. Your idea would mean it would be easier to plant around the base of the trees. Im quite fond of the all pond solutions equipment, granted its inferior quality compared to the big brands...

    Competition journal

This is going to be a long one, so where do i begin? Basically, to cut a long story short on wednesday i came in the top three of a competition ran by All Pond Solutions. The challenge was to tell them how you would scape a 10l nano tank and the top three ideas win the tank, but we have to...

    Calm river

10 hours? Thats the problem.... i bet you never had algae when it was on for just 6 hours? Sort out proper co2 and ferts and then you should be able to start increasing the lighting period :)

quick update- everything seems to be doing well. was dosing liquid carbon but it was having detrimental effects on my grass (disintergrating) so im only dosing it now when needed. tried to get a few pics of the fish today but they were being pests. managed to get one pic tho!

    APS 90 litre

I for one underestimated it! i think ive got the flow nailed though. X2 2000lph cannisters and the tanks only 285l. Ill have a tinker on sunday and see what happens.
  31. krazypara3165

    APS 90 litre

Cheers ceg, id never thought of it this way. I only added an air stone as the discus seemed to breathe more rapidly without it. Im reconfiguring my co2 setup on sunday as im in all day so i will remive the air stone and see what effect it has on the fish and re calibrate my co2 to compensate.

i fancied a bit of a change, cleaning the tank after beefheart feedings was becomming a chore and i wanted to make it easier so i did a bit of a re-scape as you can see the slate it gone, ive trimmd down a lot of the plants and binned the struggling ones. i am a lot happier with the results...

    Moving to "higher" tech

Id strongly reccomend visiting steve punchard of punchard discus on the way to preston (hes 20 mins away in blackburn) hes won several competitions with his fish and they are of an incredably high standard. Him and his assistant jordan are also happy to take people round their breeding room as...

    APS 90 litre

I run an air stone 24/7. I uunderstand it will degass the co2 but i run extra to compensate. I just like it running in case ajy problems arise wih the co2 to keep the fish safe.
  36. krazypara3165

    Moving to "higher" tech

Like you, ive thrown myself in the deeo end too being new to planted tanks and discus. Your discus should be fine with 30ppm of co2 although i constantly run an air stone just to be on the safe side. The one thing that i would strongly reccomend is that you buy your discus from a good supplier...

Discus Dan's disastrous endeavours in decorative delight

I dont know if im allowed to say this but if your planning on getting discus theres a BIDKA forum id suggest you take a look at, many members have quality fish for sale and theres a lot of breeders on there. Lfs are not known for quality discus. I picked up mine from steve punchard in blackburn...

Discus Dan's disastrous endeavours in decorative delight

    My planted Juwel 400 project!

am i right in believing you have used a reducer on one of your filter outlet pipes? this may be why the flow is reduced. i have an aps 2000lph external and i have had to use a "y splitter" to put smaller hoses on so i can attach equipment without reducing flow...
