Yeah. When I do my weekly clean I take the section cups and just put them aside in boiling water.
Brings them back to life and would kill any algae on there. A good scrub also helps.
Clive might be able to chip in, but perhaps a total blackout for 3/4 days would be beneficial with a huge water change afterwards?
Perhaps cut down on your lighting period from 8 to 6 hours a day might help.
I heard siesta don't do much.
Stupid question, but does a blackout also mean that you stop dosing your liquid/dry salts?
Would that also mean turning off the co2 or drastically dialing it down?
