personally id go with freezing 2L coke bottles with water in them then putting them next to the filter canister wrapped in a towel to insulate it, or floating them in the tank, or wrapping the filter tubes around them.
Don't use plywood. it has a horrible surface finnish. On the other hand, I probably wouldnt put mdf above the tank either. Composite woods are going to absorb the condensation from the tank and start expanding unless you have the special treated stuff.
Definatly don't use AquaSafe - API Tap Water Conditioner is safe tho - and cheap and widely availible. From the support staff over at the seachem forum

How good at programming are you?

Otherwise expect to pay about £140 for a usb pH sensor.
Remember if your using a dechorinator never to use one that has chloro amines in it. It will bind to the purigen and turn it permanently toxic.
Evidently Seachem have changed their advice to say you don't need to wash it in decholonator :S just keep rinsing it until the smell of bleach...
You might be able to squeeze it onto one of these with the rubber on, or replace the entire hoze with a clear pvc one.
The I/D of the hose is listed as 28.5mm so it might not be ideal.
