gardening compost (john innes) for base layer substrate

I guess if we were working very long term, we could buy a worm composter, set it up, let it go, feed it household waste and use the residue? not that anyone I know is that long term... but getting into DSM is teaching me a lot of patience, so maybe I"m wrong.. :) m

    permanent compleat substrate ideas?

Columbo flora base is pretty good so far - kind of like Oliver Knott's stuff, but a lot cheaper. I got mine from plantedbox.com - amazingly fast and friendly service. m

    good white sand plant substrates

when I asked about decorative sand, everyone pointed me to Argos white sand - it's about £3 for a fairly big bag (sorry, can't remember details, but Google is your friend). It's *very* fine, but also very pale... not exactly white, but close. worth remembering tho', that almost all fish feel...

    Finding suitable white sand

rats beginner == unlikely to be on the ball *at all* but have got a tank that's 90 x 75 x 18 and would like to scape out a path winding through the centre. Seems to work best with pale sand. will start looking at other ideas of how to scape that. Or just go with it and see if it makes a...

    Finding suitable white sand

Ummm... is that A Good Thing? Or bad? I'm hoping it means that the low level carpetting plants (I have my sights set on HC, but realise it might not work) will get more light and be happier? thank you all for the input. m

    Finding suitable white sand

Wow, that was fast.... someone else is stuck on a computer and had enough of staring out of the window for inspiration? thank you I had planned a finite dividing line - at the moment (in planning) the plastic lawn edging, to be hidden by plants - so that the path and front will be well...

    Finding suitable white sand

Dear all still trying to sort out substrates for the new aquarium. I have the Colombo Flora Base on order from plantedbox (thank you!) and now looking at sand to form the front two edges (aquarium viewed from in front and right side) and for a delination of a 'path' winding from front left to...

    Seramis/Hydroleca/Other alternative CECs?

Lo all Been reading about Akadama and the 'problems with' thread... and then read about Turface in the US - which isn't available here... but these two are: http://www.seramisuk.co.uk/whatisseramis.html and http://www.specialistaggregates.com/hyd ... -1368.html and I wondered if anyone had...

Base Layer: Tropica Aquacare or ADA Powersand special?

Can I hook onto the end of this thread and ask how much Osmocote you use - how thickly you spread it? The links above were for 25Kg bags which seems a vast amount even for a pretty big tank (unless it's a ready alternative to lead weights... ;)) thanks m

    Cory safe substrate

Someone elsewhere (I think on this forum, but I, too, am setting up a tank and have been reading to exhaustion these last few days so I can't be sure) - suggested plastic lawn edging to keep the various substrates from mixing. At TGM when he gave the demo, Oliver Knott used cardboard which he...
