Thanks. I was just a touch worried about the build-up I see on the bottom of the substrates.
But besides that the plants are healthy as others have said I can shove a root tab into the substrate to top up the plants.
I guess I was seeking some sense of direction in which would prompt me to...
Wanted to open a can of worms in regards to what peoples choice would be a large low tech tank.
Im thinking of something that will be running for 5+ years.
I've been running a 350 tank for 6 years solely on play sand. It doesn't have a soil base underneath and when I first started the tank. I...
Stir the sand with a chopstick :)
Plenty of those to use out where you are. Im heading to HK next year. Visiting hometown of Zhongshan. Might venture up to GZ.
I think the mix of ada and sand should be fine. I have a 350 scaped discus tank and they spend most of the time eating from the front of the tank.
They will blow their food, but should cause a problem especially if it will be heavily planted.
Just ensure that the tank is cycled and the right...
How deep are you thinking? I have a 71cm deep tank and I have my substrate from the back about 20cm or so and the front being about 2-3cm.
I made sure I used a chopstick and made criss cross patterns during the maturing of the tank and threw in about 50 MTS.
I would stir the substrate on a newly set up tank, but that is way before I have added fishes into the set up. I would also add a handful of MTS and hope they will do their job. I would use a chopstick and do a criss cross pattern every 1-2cm and do it throughout the whole tank.
If you do...
I am about to set up a breeding tank for my corys and have sand substrate.
However my intent is not to grow plants and more of a grow out tank. I would imagine adding osmocote or some mulm from the filter media will help the sand.
What are you planning to grow? This will give an idea to other...
Re: Aquatic shop in London where ADA Aquasoil can be purchas
Depends where in London you are based. I live in Victoria and struggle to find good LFS for other things besides substrate.
However some places if asked nicely will order it in for you. I personally use Living Waters in Beddington...
It all depends on what you fancy. I chose fine gravel as its easy to clean and for plants.
Also if any food sit on top of the gravel the discus can see it perfectly well. Generally all discus food are coloured so the ever so diligent discus fish will enjoy wolfing down the pellets that may sit...
I use plain black gravel and over the years I guess the gravel has a good source of bacteria etc and build a decent worthy substrate.
I do dose with EI and easycarbo though. However some people swear by getting a decent substrate etc even before they added their fish and plants.
Its a bonus...
