My question is does this tank need shutting down even if its been standing for 2 weeks.
Im assuming that the filter was still running etc? You could leave this as a simple tank that will house some plants etc?
If its getting in the way and you are packing it all up then you can reuse the mesh...
Then for co2, if you are worried why not turn it off for the week? I am sure a week without co2 wont be a problem where your tank will crash!
I haven't used co2 for many years and plants will adjust either way.
I dont see a problem either way. reducing light and co2 vs not having any in the...
I am also going away for a week and I will do a similar water change in my 350l tank and smaller tanks and do a big feed before hand.
I intend to not turning on the lights in the tanks and will have someone coming in every 2 days to feed the fish. If you are planning to drop the lighting will...
I've had something like this happen before. There was talk on the forum about shrimps getting stress which may release something in the water from themselves which in turn causes mass death. If the females are berried this can happen.
But what you doing is right, testing and doing water...
Plants go through a period where it needs to adapt unless you go straight into a fully co2 set up.
Ive had a low tech set up for over 6 years and sometimes when I introduce new plants there is some melt. Crypts are a big melter in my experience. A root tab, a trim and give it some time they...
As other have said, forward plan. I moved 6-7 years ago and what I did was that I had a gap of 3 weeks. So in the new place I set up the new tank and scaped ready and literally just shifted the fish back in.
I had lots of fish bags and ensure the journey was as quick as possible. No problems...
I think its always the case with tanks and filtration.
You are bound to get some disturbance which causes the debris to move about.
What I used to do is add some filter floss and then added a koralia. this kept the water crystal clear. Althought my tank is a 350l and lots of shrimps and...
I believe that they do, but Darren is currently in Aquarama. I think hes due back next week. Fire them an email or give them a call. Im sure they will help.
I tend to use vinegar or lemon juice.
This helps remove limescale or at least makes it easier to clean with a razor blade.
But as others have said over time you will get bacteria/parasites back over time.
Yes was a typo. In the pots that the plants normally come in or normally I have spare. I simply repot with some padding and as tim said simply lift the pot a few inches up and then cut the roots. However in the near future small plantlets may pop back but thats a bonus :)
I would put crypts in pits if you were planning to plant on different levels. Makes moving things alot easier and you can simply snip the roots. This is what I have been doing recently.
It can be easily done, but needs some planning.
I used a big black bin and caught all the fishes and placed them into the bin along with the filter running inside it so it was constanly circulated.
plants were just put into trays and covered with cling film or kitchen towel to keep moist.
If...
Im going to park around city and then tube it in as the city allows free parking on some parking bays and single yellows.
This is how I always done it.

My wife helps me do the water change on the 350l. Given that she now finds it easier with the pump and hose she just plugs it all in and away it goes. Then reverses the format and fills up the tank. She uses seacheam prime and then doses tpn+ into the tank afterwards.
Before she would help me...
Re: How much time do people spend actually watching their ta
I wouuld spent around 1-2 hours on my main tank as it lights up my living room when I lift up the lid. It doubles up :)
My gran sits in front of the tank for an hour each day and enjoys feeding the fish.
The kitchen tank maybe when I...
To be honest it would help if you had some sort of dimension you would want to build up from.
I set a budget of around the same when I bought my flat and I was sourcing a rio 400 for my living room. It took me around 3 months to source and view any local ones and in the end I settled for a...
I was planning to go Japan this year, but after the natural disaster I decided not to. I would have liked to visit other places rather than just nigata.
So instead I will head to Singapore and visit aquaram and some fish farms :)
I know the lockhart but I frequent TST more. Have you been to other fisheries based in the New territories? I am going to visit a well known discus breeder in Yuen Long. I think its called Sunny discus. His fish have won many international awards.
Thanks for sharing the pics. I frequent Hong Kong each year and visit a few of the shops and have a nice rapport with a few of the owners. Especially with the one who won the 2008. Hes opened a new shop in causeway bay which specialises in more hard scaping rather than fish.
Should visit it. I...
That is the best guide for making quick water changes. I swear by it now, the only thing that takes some time?
Is removing the water from the hosepipes, but this can be done when you coil the hosepipe and give it a quick blow to remove excess water.
I can now change 300l of water in 15 mins...
What piece of fish said. I have tried sending plants with paper towel and they arrived slightly mushy :)
I just pluck them from the tank, then bag it and send it off. However I always leave it to just when I am ready to post. Else its withering away if I pick it out the night before and then go...
Re: Planning on a new Discus Aquarium. Few questions and cos
Useful reading is on here.

Good luck. Let us know what you choose. Good to see other discus members chipping in :)
This is my 2 discus in my 180l tank :)
Re: Planning on a new Discus Aquarium. Few questions and cos
If its your first time then do read up about it, but most of the information is relevant, but in some cases even if you neglect them in foul water they will survive. But of course its torture and not advised.
Be sure that you are...
Re: Planning on a new Discus Aquarium. Few questions and cos
Also check where the discus are from. If they are German ones, they usually are fine in the harder water. But if the discus are from asia then prefer softer water which means either using RO to cut the water or posibly a peat...
Re: Planning on a new Discus Aquarium. Few questions and cos
I would opt for a tank that is higher in depth as discus prefer a tall tank rather than a long tank.
Although there is nothing wrong with the rio 300. Have you thought about sourcing a second hand tank? I have seen lots of rio 240-300...
I presume the internal filter has been removed? I think the ex1200 is sufficient, but along the line it might be worth investing in a bigger turnover filter.
I would say 2 bags is adequate, but 3 gives you the luxery of the perfect amount in my opinion. It depends how deep and how you plan to...
Re: An awesome natural scape right in the World's largest ca
Its very humbling on how small we are in the world.
Fanastic photos and envious of the explorers!
I helped set one up in Hong Kong for a friend in his private tuition school last year.
I went there again this year and the tank is so overstocked its not even funny. Basically what had happened is the parents would bring a fish or two along and drop them into the tank.
Not caring what species...
Wow. A lesson in science first thing in the morning is great. I had to read it twice but its great knowledge to be had.
Thanks for the in depth reply and knowledge share :)
Does the "fats" produced when you move your finger the film do any harm to the fishes?
Reason I asked is I would blow at the floating plants if they were to get caught up in the corners and when doing so a lovely while substance from the film falls into the tank.
Funny that you mention crypts as I do have crypts in my tanks. However this has only stared happening when the weather has gotten colder.
I notice that my tubs of moss by the window sill also have a film on top of the water. Weird. I now do daily water changes with my main tank water to ward...
How long is the leafless rhyzone?
Else you can always just cut in the middle and retie it. This might help.
Ive done that in the past from a healthy plant and created a few other anubias plants within a few months.
I simply add floating plants like frogbit and eventually once it covered a small area of the tank then the oily film stopped.
However recently I have removed the frogbit as it was totally covering the water surface the oily film has come back. But its very slight.
My nano tank doesnt have a...
I think the idea is a good one, howver to really appreciate the scaping, because the ornament will be quite low you cant really sense the scape.
How high will the tank be sitting? I think if its a standard tank, then to really appreciate it is when you are sitting down.
But as Nick says...
Re: What's the demand for high street planted aquarium shops
Looking forward to some substrate with a picture of Luis.
Also if you open a market stall Im sure I will pop by and take some pics for ya :D
Re: Stores in the Uk that REALLY specialise in planted aquar
Theres also the relaunch of Tachbrook Tropicals. I went to visit them a few months back when they had moved from Victoria and from what they said to me. It seems they will have a large planted area.
I will go and visit them this...
Looking forward to seeing this set up.
Im in the process of adding co2 into my discus set up tank and have a low light set up.
Tom suggested I can have a range of 30-45 ppm on the tank.
This is my current layout - viewtopic.php?f=35&t=6740&start=10
However its still got a long way to go.
