The cheaper one is using 0.5w leds as aposed to the other that uses 3w cree style leds.

60w of led is not comparable to 60w of t5. I have a single aquabar 500, which is 12w, in a lido 120. The tank is almost 60cm deep and 26 gallons. This works out at 0.45w per gallon and id say its stil a little too much! My tank is low tech but dont underestimate led lighting.

The 'uv' led on the tile is completely pointless too imo. Seems a ridiculous price for something you can do with leds a fairly simple cirtcuit. Ive seen one of these in the flesh, although it does look smart as a unit id say it it full of features youll never use. Reminds me a bit of smart...

I have this unit and also didnt know this :) I ended up supergluing the clear fittings to the inside ot the lid and flipping the sliding ends upside down lol.

Go with whater light tubes you like the look of :) I personally dont like the look of plant loght tubes on there own so i tend to go with 1 planty tube and 1 cool white. To save money on the tubes go to your local electrical supplier and get them from there. They may not stock aquarium tubes but...

If you go with tmc tiles or similar they are dimmable too. I would recommend led over t5 having recently taken the plunge myself for all the reasons you mention.

What size abd depth is the aquarium?

Others have stated 4x t5's to be overkill but if you dont mind spending the extra for the flexibility id go for it. I take it that it has the option to run 2 or 4?

Not sure what wattage lighting you should consider but the 'shimmer leds' will almost certainly be overpowered by the T5's. Why dont you go soley with LED lighting and ditch the T5's?

I wont know for sure, but im getting one tomorrow hopefully and ill report back how it is. If you can see a light, you can usually grow plants with it :)

Is 4x 58w t8 + 2 38w t8 enough lighing (plant wise) for 600l with a light to substrate distance of 65 cm? I dont want anything fancy, and it will be without c02 (unless theres a practical way to do it?) Mainly just simple stems and low light mosses etc.

I have a problem with the light on my 35l tank. Its flickering and not starting up properly, and when it does its only for about a second then its off again. Ive just changed the starter on it and it is stil doing the same thing. All conections are pused in and all wires are connected properly...

3wpg is good for most plants, but im no expert :p Ive added the new fluval2+ to the tank and the substrate has cleared double time :) All new plants ive added seem to be doing really well apart from the pellia so thats going to go in my betta tank :)

Just increased the lighting dramatically by putting a bit of tinfoil over the tube! Differene is incrediable :P

Works really well! Back in the day we used to filter 6 tank exclusively with pea gravel and filter floss! In our 2m tank we ran out of ceramics so we put in large grained gravel with a view to get more ceramics but it works fine so we left it in :p

Best i could do is 400lph from a fluval 2+. Its my gf's but its a spare and she only has a 25l tank so it would plaster her fish across the walls and she has already offered it to me :) Would that be close to enough flow for a planted tank? Gotta think of the baby shrimps too though.

it (or rather they) are halogens. I have 4 though because they where £3 each so i stocked up and figured its cheaper than 1 proper light so worht a whirl :p

t8's it is then :p Im swapping some large 36'' tubes and controlers with a small lfs for some smaller ones this week some time so it should be all go after then :D

ballasts? sorry :D another thing i dont understand :P my lfs just told me that i should replace my tubes every 6 months at least.

£90 is the cheapest i can find, but replacing 3 t8's per month soon adds up after a long time anyway, works out a fair knock cheaper in the long run :)
