    Leaves/Tannins

I was readin something the other day about temperatures above 60 removing cyanide some how. Do you know much about this at all? If so then a quick boil wold do the trick perhaps?

    JBL ProScan

As above. They are half decent but the ph can let them down. Depending on how many tank lights i have on it can vary from bottom end of the scale to 7.5.... I just use them as a quick dip to roughly check for gh and kh for my bees. They also dont go high enough for my tapwater which is annoying.

    Purigen vs activated carbon

Purigen removes organics (fish waste, plant waste etc) from the water column whilst carbon removes chemicals (perfumes, metals, chlorine etc). There mat be more to irtbut thats how I like to think of them. I personally use both at the same time.

50 % Water Changes using Hot and Cold Water?

When i had my 6 footer i used a mixer tap attachment for a hosepipe. Got the temperature close ish (tested by running into a bucket) and dumped the dechlorinator in then let the hose do the work.

    Testing ph

Sorry I should have read your earlier reply properly :) I think ill stick with my ph pen and testing at work for accuracy :)

    Testing ph

Thank you Darrel :) The water is hovering around 100tds at the moment. Will this impact a liquid test kit or just the probe type kits?

    Testing ph

I have a 2 point calibration ph pen which seems pretty terrible, it looses calibration almost instantly. How accurate are liquid tests for ph? At the minute im taking my water into the lab at work but its not too practical :) This is for a shrimp project which is the only reason im concerning...

    What dechlorinator?

Saechem prime for smaller tanks :) Used to use a pond dechlorinator for my large aquarium but small doses are awkward.

Preparing tap water for an URGENT PWC (Partial Water Change). How?

If you add prime to the water then you can add it instantly :) Can you increase your temperature to 26-27? If so then a 50% water change would give you a temperature increase of 1-2'C which imo is fine :) If you wanted you could top back up to 75% and leave it to cool then add the rest then your...

    Accurate method of mesuring nitrates

    Accurate method of mesuring nitrates

I dont think my wife would be supportive of that product, let alone my wallet :P I may do an experiment where i add a known quantity of nitrate to distilled water and test results with your average test kit. The reason for this thread is that i was sceptical about your beliefs but i have now...

    Accurate method of mesuring nitrates

I know the forum belief is that your average nitrate test kit is highly inacurate so i was just wandering what an accurate method of measuring would be? Im not concerned about nitrates, more of a curiosity :)

    Seachem acid buffer

Topping up with tap water will not help the hardness situation but if you cannot source ro water i cant see much alternative. My advice would be continue to try and source ro water as you will see a great improvement in numbers. If you dont dose ferts and could acess ro water id cut back on...

    Seachem acid buffer

May i ask what your kh and gh values are? I understand that some people will say cherry shrimps will survive any conditions but for a serious breeding colony, water parameters will play an important role. How long was the tank established before adding the shrimps? Not questioning the water...

    Seachem acid buffer

May I ask what shrimp you keep? If your water has a ph of 8 I would assume you also have a high tds and gh. Chemical buffers may bring the ph down but will not alter the gh of the water which is of equal importance for crystal shrimp/tigers. My method for bee shrimp verieties is remineralised ro...

    Nicks off the scale 'results'

Dont do a water change. There is 100% no need if you dont have an livestock, so its a waste of your time and it might stall the cycle again.. Leave it till your seeing 0ppm then do a 50% water change and add a few fish.

    Ouch

I am more than willing to spend that extra few quid a week to see my aquariums thrive. Im cutting down my number of tanks as we speak so cost is becoming even less of an issue :) I have seen improvement in fish behavious, less hiding, some courting behaviour and looking generally more 'healthy'.

    Ouch

Im finding it more and more difficult to apreciate your tone in replies. Bobitis doesnt like harder water, to name just one. My fishes health and colour have improved since i have started with the ro addition. As stated, i have f1 barbs which are from softwater in the wild, so it is of benefit...

No dosing, peat substrate capped with sand. Im going to start dosing the tank adn see how it goes.

    Ouch

The are f1 ''lipstick barbs'', i think thats why they dont do so well. Amazon swords are the ones i cant grow for some reason, but my girlfriend is a big fan/collector but about half the species look terrible in the tank, the others look acceptable. I also collect shrimps, so this would open up...

    Ouch

Just figured out why i dont do as well as id like to with certain fish at my girlfriends house. Tested the gh, and the scale doesnt go high enough.. It goes straight to 500mg/l as soon as I do it on 2 different tests. Would also explaine why i cant keep certain plants alive  Gonna...

4.5 PH reading using SERA Liquid PH tester

I would ditch the A/S and breed your chosen shrimps in your tapwater. That is THE perfect ph for breeding crs verieties, i wish i was so lucky. Its a combination of your c02 (could be lowering your ph up to 1 on your ph scale) and your aquasoil i think.
