    Stig of the Sump

I've done the mod and confirm it does fix the issue my pump is an newa pump 2200 I think. It's operating well within it's capacity, I had to add a valve on the return to throttle back flow..

Don't have plants near sump drain. But have made a diy cover after finding 15 ember tetras in the sump. I'll try and get a picture but essentially I cut up an old sieve and wrapped the mesh over the drain. Works a treat. :)

I have the same tank. also bought second hand as an ex marine tank, The sump gives massive over filtration. Mines low tech and doing well. :) Hardscape developing well.

    Nelson's Low Tech Asian Blackwater

Had some time to google last night general opinion is that cherry, alder and in fact any uk hardwood is likely to be ok. Just need to let it dry out to ensure sap has dried. Lots of advice in this forum and other well respected websites.

    Nelson's Low Tech Asian Blackwater

nelson, looking fantastic, 2 quick questions, can you use branches from any cherry tree in tanks I have one in the front garden that needs to come out. I also have an alder tree in the back garden so can you use their branches also?

lindy, updates needed ;-) hope you are well. re-reading this thread has convinced me to try chocos given I have been allowed to keep my sig 600 for the dining room. journal on my new sig 900 sump low tech to go on over xmas if I get chance.

    Nelson's comeback high tech

Nelson, you checked tds levels? My tap water tds drops badly in Autumn, checked it again and it's down to sub 80 again was just chance I checked it else I'd have had the same issues as 3 yrs ago when I lost 400+ in 5 months.

    Gourami Gloaming #4

What type of surface scum? Lindy, how are you getting the ph so low, had a quick look through last 5 pages of the journal and I think it's pond soil but can you confirm? Saw some choccos at the weekend and they looked fantastic....so tempted.
  21. nduli

    Gourami Gloaming #4

Did you manage to get them to breed at ph7?
  22. nduli

    Gourami Gloaming #4

Lindy, is the ph holding out? What's it levelled at? I'd argue that the tetratec should be fine long term, so long as you constrain the outflow not the inflow. If you want to maintain turnover but reduce the turbulence then consider a lilly pipe or if really concerned a poppy pipe.

    Gourami Gloaming #4

Lift, so sorry to hear, does sound like the corydoras brought something in though, steady changes in ph over time are normally ok, crashes in ph not normally good. Choccos are known to survive in ph 7 aren't they just not breed or be at their best.....

Gary, Looking for some advice on how you cut the hole in the side of the cabinet. I have a tmc high gloss cabinet and want to cut a circular hole in to run a Lilly pipe in the same way you have. Deeply frustrating day. Tank when full was 1/2 cm out of level. Emptied relevelled. Planted and filled and wood started moving about under akadama as air slowly released from it. emyr - lookiing at your solution for RO. seems really simple, do you mind me asking what the system is? thinking of using RO on main tank and not just nano tank and don't want hassle of lugging 5/6 canisters about so thinking home method might work for me.

Do you have a glass cover over the tank? My floaters hate a cover on it. Just lost another batch as they have been covered by the glass? Is your tank maintaining a stable 25or has it been rising much higher given the temps we have had recently.
